  5. as for taking advantage....a field not 200 yard from my front door has had a brace of hares on it quite a lot reacently ....theres 3 ditch crossings to this field....my plan is to put 3 stop nets on here....and take one if i can with my 7 year old lurcher in the next week or so...... sporting??? well perhaps not in the purist persuit of the hare....however as an old poacher...it will be a bit of fun.....ive tried once and drew a blank....but i will try again

  6. personally i think theres two many variables to say a straight no... first of all is it just one for the pot with an avrage lurcher...and the owner is just taking advantage of the conditions....with a dog that otherwise might not catch a hare....cant see a problem with that so long as nobody is trying to pull the wool over someones eyes ... if its just a light dusting of snow....in that case it makes little difference ...its the depth of the snow thats the key... if someone was trying to make out there top coursing dog was doing the biz ....and it was deep snow....well there ju

  7. Sounds like people need to get over that and concentrate on the dogs. They look tidy little ratting machines. That's what they were bred for so I can't see why they compare them to denning or digging terriers. They look better at the ratting job than the other types.

  9. Only one thing defines a terrier for me and that's working under the sod until dug then it is my preference on colour and type, I've got to be honest as far as Plummer go they are a nice type to look at , the crosses I saw were not working terriers as defined, without all his books they'd of died out or just become a Russell type , but look at likes of his book omega stating they were already badly inbred then and were full of physical faults, something even as a young man I found odd who the hell breeds unfit stock!! Another reason to stop reading his dribble, the faults still with the typ

  11. Its nice to have something positive to report, this is the 1st season, for a few, where I’ve not had lads contacting me about dogs with Rhabdomyolysis, perhaps its just luck or maybe I’ve not posted on about it for a while so my name is less synonymous with it as it was, whatever it may be I thought it might be time to do an update. Hopefully these days the majority of owners know what it is, a serious condition leading to a long lay off or even death, and how to avoid it as much as possible, but that wasn’t always the case. Historically it was called acidosis or running a dogs back off a

  12. spot on, funny thing i was thinking how some people would run a dog with this very cold spell we got right now. i know people land will be different, but even open land you still get mole hill etc, dog it them its game over bust feet, wrists , by me the ground like bell iron , it hard walking on it, never mind run a lurcher .?

  15. A phone call earlier today from my mate Mosh at the sheep farm, he said there was a fox crossing the field at the rear of the farm, so not having any work on because of the snow I said I’d have a run up to find out where it was coming from. When I got there I bumped into the owner elbow deep in a ewe, he pointed to where it was seen and said “get the bugger, there’ll be lambs out next week and if you see any deer while you are down there I’ll have one of them too” I set off in the snow, the temperature gauge said -3 but it felt a lot colder than that. When I got to the top field I found a set

  17. Hares seem to enjoy an almost mythical status amongst the quarry we hunt, but if I'm out for sport and enjoyment, it's fair law and the right conditions. If I'm out for one for the pot, all bets are off....I'd be happy for the dog taking one out of its seat. Cheers.

Went out ferreting today with hodge and his nephew steph, Did some awkward warrens among trees and shrubs, had to dig a few, top few inch of ground was frozen but everything was waterlogged below and some were flooded, surprised there were rabbits in them, ferrets did great and were soaking by the time we finished, ended up with 10 decent size rabbits

  25. I found a grenade on one of our fields at work years ago now, it must have been ploughed thousands of time and been through the rotovator a lot too. We had to vacate the field so got sent to work 100 yard away and the two coppers stood guard were throwing stones at it ?. It went off that night when the bomb squad set it off. Apparently the last time one was found was 30 years before and the village Bobby took it away in his bike basket rattling away to the main station in town.

Dropped feed into field and saw something stuck out of the Earth they had dug up....now I am not a million miles away from Catterick base and it looked like a pretty big anti aircraft round to me......called cops......”don’t let the pigs touch it “......bomb squad and cops turned up.....turned out to be a tracer round......made safe by bomb squad and daughter wanted to take it to show and tell next day

  29. I've been watching a few of these podcasts on YouTube for a while, one of which was with a fella that visits haunted places etc. This was one of Billy Moores guests, I haven't watched the whole interview yet, but it got me thinking of one day late last year I'd been around the higher ground of Rothbury in Northumberland, and was walking along a track road, I always make a point of staying out to enjoy a bit of road walking and survey the hares, listen to the owls, and see a few pipistrelle bats flitting about when many others have retired to the village tearoom with the prospect of carrot cake

  30. In my opinion netting a hare is as sporting a pursuit as coursing one and if you do enough until the dog begins to understand what's actually going on, instead of just chasing and getting lucky....... well that's when it really starts to get interesting.
