  1. Well I've just signed on the dotted line to buy a 63 acre small farm myself, looking forward to the government handouts and putting my feet up ? On a serious note I've NO IDEA what I'm doing and I'm shiting myself at the thought of actually earning a living from land with no experience of farming.......and I'm told there's no single farm payments from next year.

  2. Ger was an absolute gentlemen. We were digging buddies up until he got sick and sadly he had to hand over the working dog as he wouldn't be able to manage him. That broke his heart. We used to have some craic out with the dogs and also when involved with IWTF business. Ger had a great sense of humour and also insight and wisdom of the dog game and every day life. He would study things down to the fine detail and always had a different angle on things. Always making you rethink what you thought you knew. A proud Corkman and of the White Dogs we worked, he invested huge effort into protecting Te

  4. Personally,...? I've only bred genuine first crosses using Pastoral Sires,...I like most of the Herding types , so producing a frequently larger edition is really no big deal. I can only talk of the sheepdog and Cattle Dog composites that I've bred, but one thing I want to see from such a hybrid is plenty of robustness, tractability and physical traits of good strong feet and short sturdy wrists. If my end product starts to resemble a pure running dog, I feel that I have failed. The streamlining effect and the addition of extra speed can come later, in the next cross... As for that n

Heres hoping i may get this thread back on track, at a loose end and lo and behold, i came across an article penned by old phil in theold shooting news feb 1987, price 65p, the article by phil was entitled THE DEERHOUND INFLUENCE, and what a great write up it was on the true working deerhound x, and thetribute and debt thatphil owed to his old straiin of greyhound/deerhoundx sheepdog hybrids, and especially his old bitch lucy, as old phil said she seved him well and deserved her retirement,if phil reads this he may kindly post the pic of himself and the brace of these hybrids that accompanied

  9. ? Well, I've never owned a Smithfield Collie,..but back in the day,..I found a rangy heavy -coated Herder, working on the South Downs. I was visiting a traditional Sheep Fair at Findon in Sussex, and I saw this strange critter in the back of a pick up. The good old boys that owned him said he was just a roustabout, rough and ready farm dog, and that similar types used to be common,.but were no longer kept. They called him a Blue Shag... I used the dog across my Mercedes bitch and produced a quite amazing litter... Exciting days.? Connie 9 months.....

One fish that has been on my bucket list to catch is the Tiger Trout, ever since i found out there supposed to be some in a small river near me, three two hour sessions and no tiger trout, from this small river i managed to catch 4 roach.......on lures......even a spoon!!! i made it my mission now to find and catch one either way , doesnt matter where from, so i put the feelers out and soon a guy gave me a location of a reservoir with pictures of his catches, this morning saw me up and out at 4am for the two hour drive, donning my waders and rod i started to send my lures in all dir

  22. Try it mate...the railways will still be there if its not what you hoped for . Personally I've never had a "secure" job, been self employed since 19 years old so it doesn't feel like a risk to me,but completely get everyone is different.. One thing though, once you are freelancing you still do the hours mate, infact maybe more...but at least you can choose when you do the hours, if you get what I mean. If you aing afraid of graft, then it'll work, this is the busiest I've ever know it in the building/construction game so you'll have a load of starts, build a good relationship

  23. Moral of the story is fishing is many different things to many different people I guess there's no right or wrongs Personally for me it's about taking as little tackle as possible being mobile and getting away from every fecker else for a few hours...each to their own.

  24. I personally wouldn’t charge £25 but that’s not at all unreasonable, christ have a look online some people charging £80 for a kit. As cantona says above when you consider the work a ferret can give you £25 is nothing really. The days of £5 for a ferret and £100 for lurcher are over.

  25. Only, going on the dog that I've had and worked, I say 1x gsd x grey, are very good knock about type lurcher, good in the lamp, good in the day, great noise, good stamina, fair pace for big dogs,. If come out right like my big dog did. It be the 1x I get again deff? or possibly a bel mal x grey, or back to lurcher, both make a good x.

  26. £210K a year? For turning land over to meadow? Paid by the govt. Out of Our pockets. Our Taxes. I'm intimately familiar with Meadow. I smilingly gaze across it every day. I've also looked into the eyes of abject and undisguised disgust and hatred. Set in well tanned skin. I know, for Fukking sure, which I'd rather they spend My tax on supporting.

  27. What a fecking day is all i can say, Green Lurchers might be along later with a pic or two but he might be to knackered with all the reeling in he had to do . Met up at the quayside and had a good catch up natter while we got the boat and ourselves all ready for launch as it's been a couple of years since we last met up ,we then set off for the half hour journey to the mark in glorious sunshine with very little sea breeze and with a dropping tide all looked "just right" .We trolled a few lures for a few hours then beached the boat and got our legs wet with a bit of casting into some shallow wa

There's a few agricultural steel framed buildings and a couple of the old buildings, one of which I'll probably knock down. I'll spend my first year feeling it out to get an idea of how the yard works first.

It's obvious you will take a different route at sometime ,if being away from home is making you unhappy now ,it will only get worse ,but if you decide to pack it in ,it doesn't have to be now ,make the decision ,then make the preparation to pave the way ,give yourself six\twelve month to prepare financially ,to make contacts ,make yourself busy finding out all your options ,talk to your Mrs and your family ,if your properly prepared it will feel less like stepping off a high kerb ,

  40. Good show. However it does highlight one major issue in the world of British farming. Farmers don’t buy farms anymore, rich city folk do, they buy them for tax purposes and because it’s quite nice that have. The government then pays them loads of money which means they can farm inefficiently and mess about and have a giggle but ultimately not worry too much how productive the farm is. We then import sh*t food from over seas.

I have never been a cow man but one thing i do know is a weak jawed dog like everyone thinks is like a old smithfield would get it's face kicked off it by a cow and these days it's only got to get it from the field into a lorry. The old smithfields used to drive them cattle hundreds of miles on green lanes without loosing them,a weak jawed dog than can't grab a hock is no good to any drover in any time of history...

Omg the friggen bushcrafters, I was 15 when I got into it kinda big and I learned there was a biiiiig difference between some pasty dude in his backyard preaching the good word of Rey Meres ( or how ever you say it) while wearing bear Grylls eveything reviewing premade survival kits and eating canned food and the old hilljack who will get tired of dealing with and walk in the woods with a Swiss army knife ,tarp ,wool army blanket and 30' of rope for a week and be perfectly fine.?
