  1. If breeding terriers or any working animal was as easy as some profess wouldn't we all have a yard of workers ? I've only had one lifetime, I'm no expert but I can tell you what I've come to know is fact.......... No ones got the answer ! We're all just guessing and we're all still learning. Granted some are having more LUCK than others. From what I've seen I'd say the breeding IE the dogs natural ability is the key too consistent workers but socialising and giving them time to learn on the job without being pushed is the difference between average and good. And for my two p

  3. Exactly, you can eliminate all the luck factors, you can go to the legends with their legendary dogs and bitches and still produce shit. I'm with you 100% in taking the guess work out of breeding and the luck factors but I'll still have my fingers crossed and I'll still be thankful when it falls into place. The difference between most good yards and the average man is kennel management, knowing what you've got and when to work it and how to work it. You've still got to see the potential in your animal and have the ability to make it blossom. ........but you can only fetch out what's

  4. Asking when a dog is ready is like asking how long is a piece of string. They are all completely different and even litter mates will be ready to start at different ages. Dogs mature mentally And physically at different rates and there will never be a set time there will be youngsters that can a handle a few runs at 7 months for example then there will be others that won't be ready until their over 12 months. Watch how the dog moves and turns and runs when it's playing look at how physically capable it is and how mentally ready it is ... if your happy with all of these points give it a couple

  6. Reading between the lines it sounds as though this dog is the man's first lurcher. There might be any number of reasons as to why he hasn't entered it before. Strange how a late start is slagged off by some when starting a pup early is not. Better to do things when you, the owner, are properly ready, as well as the dog, rather than going in all gung-ho and messing things up. Sounds as though the lad has had some sound instruction from a friend and is only just now coming to grips with the whole lamping hunting thing.

I cant understand why anybody would even give a "Sab" the time of day they are the saddest bunch of badger shagging wankers on earth, just a bunch of mushroom head hippies crying over thousand year old traditions while listening to morrisey albums and attending student loan marches even though they're 36 and work as a coffee barista, bunch of wanks

It is worth the odd trip to Kent for the Harriers and a few Hares this time of year as well the Merlin which are so quick and low when hunting I have yet to get a photo but will keep trying.. 26. I wait till there fully mature say 12months before lamping them I like to get them pinning to nets as young as possible to build confidence. Dropping rabbits to a young dog teaches them nothing bar putting pressure on all muscle An joints that are not fully formed plus you could potentially be setting your pup up for failure with a dog that’s not mentally ready in turn createing a yapper or if your in to much a rush without putting the time in with retrieve work it’ll all go out the window on a unmentaly ready pup

  28. Been a while since I've posted. Last six months been focusing on my river fishing and doing a bit ferreting (though the rabbits aren't around in great numbers at the moment). So today I dusted off the trusty S410 and ranged it up in the back garden. It was still spot on with AA fields but then I tried some Sovereign Rangemasters and the groupings really tightened up so I re-loaded all my magazines with these and headed to the copse for 6pm. Haven't been up there for a while and it was a bit of a shock to see a large number of big trees had been felled. So I decided to settle down opposite

  30. You took it to literally marshman, I've had 35 years on the bank mate and even with the best intensions and all the pedigrees in the world there's still an element of luck. Quote me some big names that consistently produce the goods and I'll tell you some shit they've bred.......myself included. I follow a line, a family call it what you want and I consistently produce working terriers, but I still need that little bit of luck to get the golden goose instead of gifting it to the lad down the road ?

  32. Like you say, could be any number of reasons for the age someone starts their dog. And lets face facts here as well, 18 months isn't exactly a late start! I'd far rather that than starting too soon. Look at the amount of dogs that suddenly become 'available' from the age of 10 - 14 months, 'just right for starting.' They've already had the guts run out of them, and are already ruined, injured, started yapping or any amount of reasons as to why they are now suddenly 'unsuitable' or whatever for their 'owners' needs! Patience is a rare thing with the majority of lurcher and terrier owners the

I`m not sure if anyone picked up on a topic I posted yesterday, Pro sport v`s T Rex but it was put to the drawing pin head test tonight. Picking and threading those shots, sometimes, like tonight, only head or neck shots are on, the Pro Sport excelled lads. Here`s my best mate retrieving to hand. Here`s the Pro Sport .177 atb Mark.

  38. Mate I’m not denying that anyone can breed shit that’s part and parcel of breeding . We both been around long enough to that knowone can breed 100% consistency. But what I will say that without men at least men trying to eliminate the luck element you wouldn’t of had your line or the amount of workers that you’ve had over the years . if it was luck the line that you’ve got would’ve died out with the man that bred them years ago . It’s only through good stockmanship elimination of shite and granted luck lol that you still got a line workers . If it was luck then how comes someone ju

  39. Cheers, lots of reasons... Babies, self employment, lack of kit... The main reason has been waiting for my mate to take me out, it was well worth the wait! I now have free access to his perms that cover huge tracts of cornwall, expert training and entering, use of a very good lamp and good company. If I had charged ahead without him, I would have been scratching around without a clue, clumsily sending my dog after unsuitable quarry with inferior kit. With a few summer sessions he'll be ready to go come autumn. Besides he's a part of the family that just happens to contribute considerably to th
