  3. Honest looking brace there Butty? I've used all sorts for a bit of mouching over the years, and enjoyed the sport immensely. All I have today is a small Whippet /Collie hybrid which I bred for hedgerow rabbiting.. Obviously, she ain't up to much, compared with dogs who are more physically gifted, but we do have some grand old sport..?

  9. It’s all about building good soil with good micro organisms rather than adding chemicals I’m surprised more farms haven’t gone chemical free and gone back to old practices of natural fertilisers for land. I’m guessing it’s a practicality thing but definitely think all farms could play there part in stepping towards going chemical free. Tbh I think it’d be nice to see them using cover crops an animals more in crop rotation

  11. I have a lot of thoughts ! Cover crops do as follows - Trap and retain moisture so stop run off into water courses. Put fertility (in the form of organic matter) into the ground. Help break up and reduce compaction. Help to control weed burdens ie black grass. Provide winter feed and shelter for wildlife. Provide a cheap and ethical food source for fattening live stock. Reduce fertiliser use by fixing nitrogen via legumes. Cover crops and species rich herbal leys are the mainstay of my buisness. We establish thousands of acres of winter covers every

  13. Its almost an illness i actually start to feel a bit sorry for your average black who doesnt want his race being constantly cultivated and enhanced by white society into positions they are unable to progress to off their own backs it must be so patronising to see these things slipped into mainstream tv under the guise that nobody has noticed ! At least the adverts about starving Cambodian kids is honest scrounging as opposed to the crafty/cunning scrounging of these ads...and at the end of the day they are no longer advertising products they are advertising behaviour.

  16. I don't do "pretty" food I do tasty, wholesome food. I knocked up a lamb mince shepherd's pie mix last night that we had with rice, tonight when it had time to mature it went under a mixed veg mash topping and served with one of our savoy cabbage. It was indeed ansome. Pictures do it no justice whatsoever as usual.

  20. As Mr Green says it could as easily have been lost on a deer or something as it could have been dumped. Might be it jacked, or might be it’s nicked and wouldn’t get back in the motor or whatever. I try and get to them before they get shot or taken to the rspca. Generally scan them for a chip, see if they are stolen, and either way get them back to their owner if they’ve been looked after. If we can’t find an owner usually try to get them right and then find a home for them, either working or pets. I just had a dog KIA so if this one ends up without a home and is half decent it m

  21. If you want to see something real cool, some friends or mine are using a special drill to interplanet fields with strips of heritage wheat varieties and strips of small leaded clover. The drill plants the wheat at a slight angle so you get full field cover like normal but at the ground level you have a living mulch effectively which provides nitrogen to the soil (and wheat) and also suppresses weeds. Then when you harvest the wheat the clover grows up as a winter cover and you graze it. Then you redrill with the wheat or whatever. The clover never dies and acts as a living mulch for say 3 year

  22. There's people who slag off the lurcher book writer, but not me ! I think it's a skill, an art, and if they use a little bit of "poetic license", so what, It's not supposed to be a reference book ! Darcy's good at it, but then I'm a bit biased, a couple of my dogs got a mention in one of his books ! ? ! Cheers.

I bought a set of very cheap copper cutlery a year or so ago just get the spoons. I should've known better. They've turned out to be copper plated over something that has repelled all attacks by a hand held drill. Years ago l made a big brass toby type spoon from a bit of plate that came from the doorstep of our local Woolworths when it was being demolished. It was at least 7" long and lt caught quite a few pike. Unfortunatly none

  25. I made house buying money when I got into it, when 99% of the customers are paying cash, and your in a hydro store and people walk in with up to £25k to completely fit out a unit (I have a friend who spent 60k over 3 months) you realise how Levi strauss and the guys selling riffle-boards, pans, and shovels during the gold rush (green is the new gold) we're the ones who really made the money. Places like Chesham hydro buy huge amounts of police seized gear and re-sell at a profit.Phil a hydro store owner I know has hunted in Africa, Romania, and a few other places and has a great lifestyl

  32. I’m not particularly a fan of any farm subsidy. It creates an uneven playing field and promotes inefficient practice. However if we are going to subsidise farms I would be happier seeing it based upon the delivery of some public or environmental good rather than for mere ownership. Ultimately in farming, survival is no longer mandatory. You need (and much more so as time passes ) to be good, top 5%. You need to be efficient and reduce inputs and focus on profit not turnover. Cover crops, temporary grass lays, genetics, integration of livestock etc are all going to play a ma

  36. Phil, somehow I think your "aint up to much" is probably a lot more than most other people manage.? Fitzwilliam, mine are similar to yours but mine are 3/4 kelpie 1/4 kelpie.? I currently have three, a seven year old male, three year old male and a fifteen week old pup. However, I'm seriously considering rehoming the middle one as we simply don't get on. It's a bit like when someone splits up with someone and says, "it's not you; it's me."? Several people have told me they think it's middle child syndrome...but he's always been like it. He's lovely but he simply drives me (and the re

  40. I genuinely don't know enough about it to comment. Sure it seems like a good thing but I know there's often another side. I thought it was interesting from a sporting and conservation point. Covering the countryside in cover crops is going to have a huge impact. I'd love to see this aid grey partridge recovery, the decline largely caused by intensified farming practices.

  42. Years ago when there were no locators you remained silent ! you had to listen for every bump or squeal that was made so that you had a good idea where to enter a liner , now days people are not as cautious because the rely on a locater to find a grounded Ferret but common tells you it is better to be quite and still until the action starts and then some noise is acceptable, over the years whilst digging i have had hundreds probably more rabbits bolt when digging out or just putting nets down so who knows but i have noticed that Rabbits bolt better into longnets rather than purse nets .

  46. Been out for an hour tonight, after 2 blanks I’ve waited for the right conditions and I chose tonight, slight drizzle and wind blowing and now we’re up and running, 3rd time lucky. I know any Lurcher should catch a rabbit but I’m proud of my dog he bought them back alive, near enough straight back to me (little bit of showing off from him) Praised him to high heaven, I must admit after I took them he wanted to get at them again before they went in me ruck sack I told him a stern leave it but he tried it, I suppose to be expected at first? The dogs 11 months old next week so very early days
