  1. It's not allways about numbers. Not to long ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to the Cairngorms for a weekend, by Northernlite and Taysider. We had a fantastic time, but one naysayer mocked the fact we "only" caught 73 rabbits and ten white hares. But it wasn't about numbers, it was about the whole experience; catching quarry I had never even seen before, running on grounds I'd never done before, seeing golden eagles floating in the sky above our heads, sitting in front of a roaring fire in the shooting lodge enjoying the craic and a drink, seeing other types of dogs run.

Here in the South, we have always had to endure a heavily keepered scenario,...and their powers were always backed up, with a fairly stringent police presence, combined with a Magistrates Court more than willing to impose the harshest fines possible, to offenders. It has always been the same... In fact, I have appeared in front of a Magistrate who was a paying member of the very Pheasant shoot that I had been visiting, after

This bitch is well gone now ,touched by "old man time ,Dee was one of the very best bushing dogs I've owned & had the pleasure to spend time with out on the hill .Unwanted by a farm hand she came to me ,very thin & covered in fleas .She was frightened ,hiding in the back of the kennel & when I reached into the box she came forward & fanged my hand ,drawing blood. She had been chasing the farmhands chickens & I could tell she had been beaten & miss treated .Dee showed me within several days she was very gun shy & at the first signs of the gun being used she would bo

  9. 17inches with plenty of leg and had numerous 3-4 hour digs to this dog and never heard it make a peep and have witnessed and known of plenty of others like him.Not many lads have bred patterdale/whippets but im sure if they were more common lads would realise theyd probably be better than little lurchers bred from non earthworking bedlingtons

  10. ?As stated, the best choice for a rabbiting dog, is the fecker that can regularly catch'em..? I've settled on my own style of jukel,...they have been selectively bred by myself, for myself, and to meet the requirements of my local area..We all love our lurchers, but essentially, they have to do the job for which they are intended,..so,..it makes sense to use the right tool for that job...Different terrains will often require, a faster, stronger, bigger, smaller,..different style of hunting partner....I have kept all sorts for the rabbit job, and to be honest, I've sometimes kept a sledgeh

  12. So mentioning the leading story of the day is me being obsessed … the man that wrote and signed off the laws stopping the nation from hugging and people that weren’t living together from having sex then breaks every rule that he wrote and you think it’s obsessive to mention it. I’m more concerned about your little obsession with me.

  13. Was out with a lad one night, field’s were full of rabbits. He was running a 5/8 bull greyhound bitch , we stopped on 21 rabbits so we could have a bash the following weekend, the bitch could have done 50 + that night. The following weekend we saw next to nothing.. I phoned farmer next day and he said he’d let his nephew on with rimfire … morel of the story.. if the rabbits are there and the dogs fit enough… carry on and fill your freezer.

  14. I personally think a rabbiting dog shouldn’t be to big and definitely not to small something around 21-23” TTS. Quick off the mark, agile ,soft mouthed , good nose and tough not just feet but physically and mentally .So basically a pup from parents that have those attributes would be my choice not necessarily based on breed type. Obviously no guarantees on the out come but gives you a fighting chance. But the biggest clincher on choosing a pup is the wife’s got to like it ?

  15. My point isn't about riteous carp fisherman, the scene is not my cup of tea either and but that's by the by... Good practice should be encouraged and taught... my kids can fish they get shown how to use a discrorger from day 1, I very rarely take a bigger fish out of the landing net, it is unhooked and realesed without even handling it ... even that shark the other day was back in the water without being lifted for a pic or measured as for me the welfare is more important than a fish being out of the water too long... I agree many carp lads have some strange attitudes, I also from persona

  17. I think good fish care should be a given if you are not keeping a fish for the table, no matter the fish. Because of the size of carp, pike, barbel etc the use of unhooking mats are an obvious one, why let them smash around in the dirt? But as above treating everything you catch with care is just good practice, and if your keeping a fish (sea and game in this country) then kill it quick the same as any animal. Can't get my head around why anyone would question the care of stock (whether wild or commercial) for the future...

  20. Took our lass' hw99s out tonight try to get a its first kill.. she came with me but i was shooting. Shes not good enough yet to hunt with a springer.. pigeon was about 35 yards i went for the chest shot, dropped like a stone out of the tree. Then the rabbit was 32 yards.. We sat outside the warren, against a wall... Had to wait about 15 mins for it to come out. I have seen rabbits in this corner of the field multiple times and bagged one last night so i thought another to add to the stew pot tomorow would be great.. anyway out it came and it stopped so i took the shot kneeling and knocked

  29. I’ll lure fish for them but not bait fish in summer but if you do want to bait fish don’t mess about , don’t use the John Wilson method of watching the fish run to the next county before striking , hit them straight away and don’t keep them out of the water for long because they are pretty delicate . For traces don’t use the heavy flouro/mono because no matter how heavy you go they can go through it like it’s nothing . I know flouro is getting more popular with some of the youtubers because of what they see over in Scandinavia and the states but they rarely if ever show the bite off’s they get

  30. It's not the caring bit it's the rightous dickhead carp boys who will put down every other fecker and yet there the worse for never giving the fish a break, ffs half the big carp have names there caught so fecking often and for what i pic with some scales showing it was 3 oz's bigger than it was yesterday. But it's ok as we got a unhooking matt and a bag to keep it in over night so we get a better day light pic, sorry mate not my cup of tea at all....

  31. Never really had huge bags of rabbits, I guess low 30's is about it with one dog, and to be honest, that's probably the exception rather than the rule. I remember, and get more pleasure, out of what I call " one fielders"; like when a Beddy type took ten rabbits and a hare from one field, or when a deer x took five hares from one field, on the lamp. Other things that give me great pleasure is when a young dog takes its first daytime roe buck, or when a nine year old bitch has its first run out of a motor on fallow, and pulls the first and only one it runs, without making a fool of it

  32. Clay shooting every time, love it. As a retired old fart, I can no longer afford competition shooting otherwise I would be fully switched on to that again. Our perms are mostly crops so not much shooting at present although feral pigeon shooting with the air rifle is good fun. Phil

  35. When we had one a couple of years ago I was told by a couple of bee keepers I know that they will move in 3 days, they have enough food with them to survive and they will have scouts out looking for somewhere to move to. They were no problem while they were here but the bloody big cloud of bees when they arrived and left was a bit worrying especially when I was in the shed and I heard next door shouting their kids in because of all the wasps. I locked myself in at first but the little shits were landing next to my kennels so I legged it to rescue the mutts.

  36. Go to the BBKA website swarm collection page, punch in your postcode and contact a local beekeeper to collect - hopefully the link will work. Swarm removal | British Beekeepers Association WWW.BBKA.ORG.UK Beekeepers are often approached about winged, flying creatures, especially in the spring and summer period, when they are their most active simply working and are... It may bugger off or not. If not they’ll get pissed & be a pain in the arse (quite possibly literally depending on what you get up to in the garden?), or bugger off som

  38. Big carp in the UK are a huge investment for a fishery, some of them are worth a couple of grand. There are also the fish on big pits that may not have been caught for years. The last thing you want is some clown letting them flap about on hard baked banks or gravel. So really it’s just a basic welfare issue, doing what you can because you can. No different to looking after your game areas or raising birds for a shoot, no reason to be casual when you can do a bit more than that and keep things really good type stuff.
