  1. Don’t take this the wrong way but everyone and everywhere is different and while I accept that plenty of what you say is true........ having good permission off good folk...... is a fecking godsend in this day and age for anyone wanting to work their dogs hard.

  2. I popped out last night to check my bait station to see if a fox had found it yet. Still plenty rabbits there so wasn't hopeful , started calling and nothing but then I noticed to my left slightly obscured a fox lying in the field. I could have shot it 10 times over but wanted a 100% identification , I knew it was a fox but wanted to see its body as using red led its eyes were glaring back at me but I couldn't see its body. Eventually it stood up , great I thought but it dropped into a ditch and laid up. I spent the next hour trying every call under the sun to try and get it to move but it sta

  3. Well guys this has been very interesting and I have learnt a lot. I have had two units in my hands. One very expensive! Interestingly, the expensive one can still have issues! Something just is not jelling with me! I went out last night with my lamp like normal. Nice and simple. Just observed woodcock and hares. Nice. And a hell of a lot cheaper! I sat at my new baiting area, wnd was perfect. The camera said long-tailed slinky came at 4:30am the night before. I sat there with little moon light a good 50yds from the baiting area and through my rifle scope see well enou

  8. That shouldnt be what its all about. It should be about the dogs, and not ego boosting. People who say they dont want permission are without exception liars in my opinion. Getting permission and being able to concentrate on the dogs and not looking over your shoulder all the time is part of being dedicated to the sport and the dogs. Trouble is it takes determination which many expect in their dogs but lack it themselves.

  10. Spot on Bosun ......The problem was each section of country sports went their own way, shooting and fishing didn't want to know us and ironically they will both be the next one's to get stitched up ,fox hunting were shameful in their behaviour, dog lads were hung out to dry and used as a bargaining tool ....... like you I'm 55 never had any permission, but proud to say have never smashed anything up never stole anything, just ran my dog and went home , even had a copper stop me one night and ask if I had a spare rabbit.......how different it was then ?

  12. This is something I’ve used for a long time, long before NV and the fact is, they just work, I’ve used both the foxpro and the icotec and them two are basically the same thing in a different shape box, the new icotec digital caller I use now is really good, the sound quality is far better than the old icotec and foxpro, that’s not to say the older ones don’t do the job very well, the down side to the new one is you need a Sherpa to carry the thing around for you, saying all this the foxes still need to be around to hear it, another thing is, they really come into there own in mating season bec

  17. My last litter i kept to bitches back and they was switched on around 8 9 months old I would say bitches start earlier and mature faster where as dogs some don't realy switch on until after 15 16 months imo seen some start after 2 years of age. Most people don't have patience for late starting dogs and dogs gone or spoilt by time is older. The percentage of bitches making better killers is higher so most people like to play it safe but if a dogs makes good will always be be better then a bitch imo. Only thing with my bitch is it has season every 6 months and loosing conditioning if ur not jab

  18. The bit about the radios reminded of one day myself, LDR and another lad were out for roe. We dropped one lad outside a copse with my old Doberman, and me and Danny posistioned ourselves on the other side with a Bruce and Delta. we radioed the lad and told him to slip the Doberman and she would work the copse. sure enough, two roe flew out. And Bruce was slipped on one, which was pulled in a farm yard. "Bruce has pulled, Bruce has pulled, meet back at the car" Danny called on the radio. The radio then crackelled and a voice came over "This is a restricted Chanel and a

  21. Day 5 over with and where do I start, at the beginning I suppose. I’ll start of by saying the weather was absolutely terrible with rain and low cloud, 12 people missing due to bat flu, not ideal, especially when we had 3 guests that I wanted to put a good day on for as guest number 1 is a keeper on a big estate down the road and has helped us out a lot, guest number 2 is a keeper from a big syndicate in Richmond and guest number 3 was a keeper on a farm shoot and as I just play at this I really wanted them to think I had some idea about what I was doing, we gave it until about half 10 and as

  22. I've all ways been interested in field walking finding stone age flints which I have found loads. Ferreting, fishing, shooting, foraging for fungi mushrooms, Photos etc so I got a metal detector, like I needed another hobby lol. I alway found it interesting and have farms river banks and beaches I can search on. Well river banks near me full of Bullets from an old rifle range and of coarse fishing weighs, drove me mad. Fields all I seem to find is plough shears horse shoes few modern coins and bits and pieces no hoards but here's hoping. Be nice to have a separate section on the forum.

  24. Mate o mine is very knowledgeable. Discovered many Roman coins, including some valuable rare ones. Has a super sophisticated machine. I would love to to take it up but Iv e got so many different ties I haven't the time. One coin he discovered was awarded after 25 years service in the Roman army. It entitled the bearer to a plot of land and a pension in Rome. Often wonder how it came to be lost. Did he ever get his pension and land or did he miss out because he misplaced the coin?

  27. Interesting little fact mate the shape of a birds eyes seems to dictate nocturnal activity the robin has round eyes and will sing all night long, the blackbird has slightly less but still round eyes and is the next to join the dawn chorus, the rounder the eyes the more nocturnal seems to be the norm, don’t know if there is any science in that but it seems to be true ??

  28. Been very lucky past few years to havd access to perm days running safe parking ect but tbh ive got perm on some places and never ever been back and got friendly with certain keepers and that that make it awkward to go on some bits of land at certain times of year. I quite like the unnoficial perm where nothing said but you get on and do your thing cause little agg and they get on and do theres and make out you dont exist.

  30. Like you say mate each to own. I love my thermal & nv combo but I'm still selective over what I shoot, for exact reasons you state. I use self control to keep a usable balance. Another thing I like about not using lamp is that it's not only animals that aren't aware your out and abouts. Nosey neighbours don't see nv.

I look at stuff and think how many blocks and bricks did I have to lay and working in the rain? then I still think feckit and press the buy button?

  33. Yeah, in reality, that is the favourite way to go about the Hunting Life, in this day and age...? Unfortunately,.. and I am sure you know this,...you are in a minority... The facts are, No matter how hard a man works or how much time, effort and good deeds one devotes to gaining good permission.. there is simply not enough places on that Magic Bus.... The majority of lads will not be able to 'get in'....? I know of several keen guys who are in the clique, and can quite literally, do as they please over quality pieces of land. They have worked hard over the years , either su

  36. Feeding this morning, pre shoot day, when I set off it was cold but clear, by the time I’d got on the top there was between 3 and 4 inches of snow, first port of call was the farm to load the quad with wheat and off to the forestry pen, that’s where the problems started. On getting to the pen there wasn’t a bird to be seen, so I walked around the back of the pen as I could hear a bird taking flight and going mental, where I was greeted with a black spaniel running riot, now I know that this little tw*t belongs to a lass that works for forestry, so off I went to find her as this is not the firs
