I know many of you on here will have seen my sidekick Ruby the Pomeranian alongside my running dog's on many of my post's over the year's,sadly I had to have her put to sleep back on August 17th of this year at 15 year's of age, even 2 weeks before she died we were up hiking in the Highlands of Scotland in the Arrochar Alps..sadly the old girl went downhill quite rapidly & it was a very hard day for me when I took her to the vet's as she was my shadow, where I went, she went that's just how it was, they said she hadn't been in the vets since 2006 when she had her jabs for parvo/distemper so sh14 points

There are no hiding places out on the mountains, especially in the dead of winter where temps are often well below -10c & when the winds blowing the real feel can be sub -20c quite easily, the weather can be brutal, the terrain likewise & the critters that make them mountains their homes don't just fold & submit, far from it..it's a tough old game hunting the high tops especially when the rocks, scree & everything else is covered in a layer of the white stuff be it snow or ice or even both, just being out in such conditions for several hours can take it's toll on both man and dog esp11 points

True words there Brother...? I think we all like to believe,...in fact, I believe,...we want to believe.... Nowadays, I don't travel much, but I used to get out and about, and I tried to meet all the notable faces, within the minor Field Sports scene.. Maybe it was me?...(for I am no big deal myself), but I found a high percentage of well known legends, to be rather less than legendary...? Whatever,....we can all appreciate a canny bit of prose, and I admire anyone who can string a few sentences together,.. indeed, we have some cracking good scribes on this site? .. but, I7 points

From John O'Groats to the south coast, the offshore isles too we travelled & hunted it all,not always successful but we gave it our best shot..nowhere was ever too far, nowhere was to difficult for us to reach be it by foot,by car or by boat,we just went in pursuit of our quarry be it through hell or high water,no exceptions & no excuses from us ?7 points

" Revenge " is a real tricky thing to sort out in your own mind as you either have to fully commit to it or walk away theres no half measures......to take true revenge the person has to know where its come from, but to get away with it you have to distance yourself from it and you cant do both....my advice, unless you are around folk who know how to get shit done then walk away.6 points

My daughter who was 12 at the time wanted a puppy mate, she seen this in a local pet shop and we bought her it,£450 I paid for Ruby back then, most expensive dog I'd ever bought in my life!.You know what kid's are like after a few weeks the dog was forgotten about, initially my daughter was carrying Ruby about in little shoulder bags, had pink ribbons in her hair & the rest of it but after the novelty wore off I took the pooch out on all my daily walks with the lurchers,in her mind she was every bit as big as them..the 1st rabbit she ever caught was one with myxi that was sat in a coma under6 points

It always amazes me. All of the dark and horrible stuff happening in the world, all of the ways our planet and society are falling apart ........ and folk are passionately worried about people chasing a fox about with some dogs. A sense of perspective is what some folk sorely lack.5 points

Ruby was my best friend as well as part of my hunting team,we enjoyed hiking in the mountains throughout the UK & she's topped out on hundreds of summits over the year's..even in her last year of life she still put plenty of miles in,my Garmin Fenix GPS watch put our mileage in excess of 3000 miles which equates to about 8.5 miles per day, every day of the week for 365 day's of the year, hail, rain, sunshine, snow, gales, storms we still were out on our wanders,in her youth & mine too we would of done much more but still she kept on marching right up to the end..a fantastic walking companion5 points

Last time I was in Spain I was walking along a drinking street and some pissed up old grannies shouted "El Largo" at me. (I'm tall compared to Spanish blokes anyway.) I played up to them, made a fist and put my left arm on my right bicep and raised my right arm. They cackled like f**k. Mrs went one better though, she shook her head and held up her little finger and bent it. They cackled even more. Universal communication.?4 points

Thank you very much, when people describe me as proper it’s normally followed by a 4 letter swear word ( the one that the missus won’t let me say )??4 points

I've been drawn into the argument to many times, and won't again. If you want to see bulls go see them, if you don't then don't. If you have practical questions about bulls I can try and answer them, moral ones are for individuals to work out. I've never felt bad after a bullfight, but often have felt bad after a days shooting knowing perhaps dozens of birds flew on with shot in them. The effects of shooting can be shut out of your sight....the bulls can only be watched with eyes open... Fck I'm being drawn in....? Yes I have seen many. And trained with fighting cows out4 points

I picked up my first lurcher last year, he's a good lad, very intelligent and responsive. His recall is good, he will retrieve a rabbit dummy back to hand over a farm gate. He has good prey drive for Rabbits and squirrels as has tried to chase a few when he's been off lead. He's a year old now and I want to get him on the rabbits. I've bought a decent lamp but I've read it's best for him to catch a couple of day time sitters before taking him lamping. I've never coursed before and don't know anyone who does it either. What's the best way to get him a day time catch? I've g3 points

This was Boots having been successful yet the weather was absolutely baltic & within minutes he was within a breath of death as soon as the adrenaline in him relented..this is the reality of hunting up in the mountains & Wales 1234 post confirms the dangers of running up there too..we all know every run can be a dog's last run everytime we slip them even on a nice flat pasture of a field but a couple of thousand feet up,miles from anywhere or anything in the dead of winter if things go pear shaped you really are walking on a knifes edge in regards to the wellbeing of your dog..I'm glad3 points

Worse thing mate is when the sister/daughter keeps going back time after time dig after dig! Some time you just have to wash your hands until they have learnt for them selves. Or you will be fighting/rolling about week in week out.3 points

Just when l was congratulating myself on having cleaned up today's jobs by lunchtime a call came in. There was a hornets' nest in a 14th century alms house in a churchyard and the Warden, who apparently normally dealt with his own nests, had baulked at this one . The approach up a narrow spiral staircase to the upper room where the nest was hanging didn't offer much scope for manoeuvre . l opted to use a hand puffer to apply the powder as even a short lance would've been a hinderance. Suited-up ,l approached the nest which despite the time of year was in decidedly ful3 points

Nice to see a little dog have a real dogs life. I think people worry too much about what breed when some are champions when given a chance R.I.P Ruby.2 points

Yes, I've read that about Joyce. Hemingway was a boxing ref but never actually boxed as far as I am aware. Jim Corbet books excellent. Like Dido, I've learned never to have heroes, once you delve into your heroes' lives you end up disappointed.2 points

Think I read that in a book somewhere not ST. Have you seen the bloke who hunts with mink....he grabs em for fun. Are they just soft yank rats? Apparently him and plummer can do it. I try it once and look like a cnut. Need to do some more research. @Wolfdog91can you try and catch a yank rat for us in the name of research?2 points
