The thing that a lot of people don't realise is that a hare won't hit top speed until the dog is right behind it. It might look as though it's going flat out, but watch it go down a gear or two when the dog reaches it and you see it was only cruising. That's how experienced dogs can be given massive slips and still get to the hare with plenty of energy left to actually run the hare hard and catch it.5 points

I think for me , loss of liberty would be a terrible punishment. Also being locked up with the witless and the unlucky . The prisons I would guess are populated to a large degree by people with drink / drug problems, learning difficulties. Or just idiots who don’t think the law applies to them . But we have all I’m sure done things that in retrospect were stupid and could have potentially landed us with a stretch at her majesty’s . I watched a program not too long ago about a guy being hit outside a nightclub and died . I know I had a few tear ups when I was young and could have easily ended u5 points

The chicken sheds have been very quiet recently with very little rat activity due to the change of pest controller who knows his job (b*****d lol).Got the call last minute as usual and turned up with 4 terriers . Like the old days really with rats breaking out as the shed was moving and terriers doing their thing . Finished with 168 with about 20 killed under the shed as it cleared the muck and not in the pic . Hopefully some immunity has been built up . Brings our running tally to 19,775 since starting in 20084 points

Ive never had a coursing dog or been into coursing but one of my old lurchers could kill a hare or two but couldnt do a thing with the hares on the fens the couple of times i went up there with a few lads to have a morning out.I did see a couple of well bred coursing dogs in the hands of good dog lads and to see them killing hares in numbers off of 150yrd slips was an eye opener.4 points

Ive seen a few sporty type lurchers that could knock over a hare or two over the years but to try and compare them to a top class purpose bred coursing dog.Well there is no comparison.4 points

Sorry, but that doesn't sound quite right. Dogs don't break their bones easily at any age, but especially when they're pups playing around and their bones are still green. Unless his garden is full of rat holes...4 points

Dog training is 90% conditioned response, so like training a dog to do anything, the most important rule is to only give the command when you're in a position to enforce it. That doesn't mean you should bash the dog, but if you tell him to come, he should come at once - there should be nothing optional about it. And it's a slow, step by step process over a month or more. So to begin with, only tell him to come when he probably wants to. Then make a fuss of him when he comes. When that gets entirely predictable, tell him to come when he might not want to, but isn't particularly distracted. If y4 points

It’s been suggested a straight whippet, it would deffo help keep the size down which you say you are after. With so many breeds in the mix I think a grew would give you more chance of throwing bigger pups with the greyhound influence from the grew combined with the deerhound and greyhound influence in your bitch.4 points

I believe she took Champions job on the shadow cabinet after Corbyn forced Champion to stand down that's how f****d up this so called political party of the working class has become and has become imho a political party led by middle class left wing university out of touch with ordinary folk types.4 points

A few weeks back, Si was down this way with his missus - I think they were spending the night in Cheltenham or something. Anyway, Si popped into my work and surprised me with this Philippines Simmonds Whitetail Classic 3.5-10x50 Due to being busy and short staffed at work, I've only managed to get it on the Mercury Challenger today. It's a cracking scope - I can't wait to get out and get a good session with it. Now, both of my retro springers have nice scopes with a good, simple duplex reticle Cheers Si, Much appreciated mate3 points

Marydoll I agree with a lot of what you are saying, but it’s nothing to do with Albert or the game fairs. However, what happened on Sunday cannot be condoned by any right minded person. It’s time everybody that runs a show stood up to bullies and cheats....... any kind of behaviour that involves threatening people, head butting people or going for somebody with scissors should be an automatic lifetime ban from any event that’s supposed to be a day out and a bit of craic. Decent people are fed up with this and it seems to me that some can get away with it time and time again. Enough is enough!3 points

That's the thing with the coursing bred dogs, they can be crossed with other types if you want to adjust the running style for smaller land etc, but a top saluki lurcher is an end product really when it comes to the hare game3 points

He will definitely get off with this ... this is a very small snippet of the information there is tons of transcript and the appeal judge summing up on this guys twitter feed .......3 points

there's a world of a difference between a lurcher hunting up and catching a hare or two and a good coursing dog killing good hares in winter, and there's a world of difference between a good hare killer, and a reel top class dog, and I know lots off hares are not given fair law but that the man not the dog, over the years I done some crazy slips, if it pulls it goes lol.3 points

I'd wager that the establishment are getting nervous at the amount of support this mans cause is getting and to try n stop it would further his support and turn us natives against the establishment itself and vote accordingly3 points

Glad you said catching, not coursing. Was the same myself with my old dog. Very powerfully built, and just looked too plain, big and bulky. People that scoffed at me and thought I was exaggerating about him, went very quiet after they saw him catch. Massive difference between hare catching and hare coursing. Oh yeah, dog was 26" tts and almost 80lb in weight, fit. Caught me loads of hares, and every one of them would've been before about 25 seconds3 points

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say a big thanks to Nick8310 for taking me rabbit shooting and passing on some knowledge. If anyone has a permission and is looking for an experienced shooting buddy with a rimfire or shotgun in Essex, Nick is a really nice guy to go shooting with.2 points

As long as they have not been left cocked they should be good to go if out they may need a de,grease and re,grease that should be about it best thing is to give them both a little plinking sesh and listen to how they perform if they twang then a greasing you will go lol and as for a new rifle you cant go wrong with ether of the ones you have mentioned but the 98 is more a target rifle but just as good out in the field . A 97 if bought new will need a de,grease and re,grease to be made better plus a polish of the internals or a tuning kit fitted but ince you have h2 points

you can buy a line bred coursing pup for a couple of hundred, bring it up well enter it when it is physically and mentally ready and that may not be at the same time so be patient and you may get a world beater or pay a few grand and stick yer chest out, its your choice as for colly crosses killing hares I can assure any one unless its a freak it wont kill 3 winter hares coursed proper any where, I had a whippet sized bitch with saluki and beddlington in it that used to kill foxes single handed in winter and make a proper job of it, but I aren't daft enough to compare that to a proper fox dog2 points
