What a wonderful contribution to this thread Lutra Lutra... Your words, come across as being a man from another time,..and as such, they have a genuine feeling of nostalgia. It makes me (and probably a whole warren full ) of fellow hunting enthusiasts, hark back to better, warmer, more friendly days. I am sure we have met You mention TOMO,.and yes, I would have to agree, he is a good guy around the ferrets,...almost as keen as I once was... We need to praise the Goodfellas and vehemently condemn the vermin that skulk in our mixt,..such cruel wasters offer nothing, the13 points

No I'm probably not as hard, I'm apparently not as funny as it either. It was a joke fella, sarcasm from the person generally considered a stereotypical 'unhard' nerd amongst the members of this forum. Clearly my talents aren't in stand-up!6 points

Had a mate out for a day on the fallow , he had a hour and half drive arriving at mine for six thirty , a quick coffee and 15 min drive see us over my perm at seven ..with a sharp easterly wind we only really had one choice of action , in the gate turn sharp right and follow the road right to the bottom , park up and work into the wind through the bottom wood ...as we came in the headlights cast over the top fields , parkland more than actual fields , sixty or seventy deer were out feeding in almost one long line across the very top of the field , with absolutely no chance of getting on them w6 points

I got a call on Monday from a school with a fox problem. This was the result from my visit yesterday. Taken with Hornady 17g V-Max between 50-110 yards. The HMR was used because it was the most appropriate for the job. I seem to deal with a few at schools, but it's usually one or two or a family, not often I take 6 in about 2.5hours.5 points

My mate runs a generation 1/2 x back to a grey and its a good fast dog.it picked up the knack of running around the field edges intercepting rabbits trying to get back when she was quite young and done other stuff that you'd expect. Not a photo of his but a half x,his was just an inch shorter.5 points

Well as some of you may know I recently became the proud owner of a pre owned mint condition Hw100s in 177 flavour, Mitch (villaman) kindly sent me some AA express to try out , Jimmy (bigmac) also did the same but JSB heavies along with the loan of his single load mag?. I had been planning to visit a range quite local to give the gun a good try out and also test out the pellets but for one reason or another i haven't been able to get down, however, i did manage to do some practice today while the Mrs took the grandkids out for the day. I nipped down to the local RFD and picked up a p4 points

So I'm talking to a mate today. He says ''You ain't gonna' believe what my stupid step son did''. I asked what was up and it goes like this. '' I got home last night and the Mrs and her son are looking a little upset (the son is 18 by the way) so I asked what was wrong. She says that the son was driving along with his mate out near Othery (this is countryside territory)and something ran out in the road. He heard a bang so stopped to have a look. They walked back and could see a cat in the grass, it was still alive as its tail was moving. He didn't want it to suffer so he gets something out the4 points

I can only echo what other people have said as to how enjoyable this thread has been. There is a definite need for someone to record the knowledge that just about still exists but may soon be lost. The dreaded books, a cause for much argument and scorn as to the credentials of the person writing them and the people featured. I get that, but we still all read. The people reading this do anyway. Not a how to do this or how to train a dog to do that. More in the style of Lucas' Hunt and Working Terriers perhaps? The only terrier book that I read as a young man but have found myself returning3 points

This is not the end of the world,.. and nothing to worry about... I remember my Father gutting out the rabbits and showing me the marbles in the does, back in the late 1950s. Personally,... I believe that many of these first litters of rabbits, do not make it,..the climatic conditions, at this time of the year, are just so harsh. We have often paunched out batches of shushis and found perfectly formed babes within,...as to whether they would have made it, who knows.. Some litters survive, obviously, but I've never curtailed my hunting, whether it be paid or recreational bec3 points

Imagine if the advertising people has told the black kid's parents he couldn't wear that on the shoot. There would be all sorts screaming racist. As someone else said, damned if you do, damned if you don't. The parents were quite happy to let him model it for a few quid and a 'nana. That should be the end of it.3 points

Actually I'm very surprised at how powerful my lurcher's bite is. I'm guessing it must come from the staghound side of her breeding. She can literally crush a large feral cat's skull so the eyes pop out with just a couple crunches! Raccoons are much tougher than cats, and don't typically go down without a good fight. I never really intended for her to be a raccoon dog, I just like to catch a few with her every now and then. I mostly wanted her for working along side the mink, and doing some feral cat pest control, both of which she had done wonderfully at. I'll see about getting a coon video I3 points

Could you hand feed him? Would make it much easier to regulate how fast he eats his meal. Might be an idea while you wait for the maze bowl to arrive anyway.3 points

Well I had planned a good afternoons sport on a perm I haven't visited since mid November but the van wouldn't start and her indoors needed the car so I had to wait for her to return. This meant just a couple of hours on there instead but I've not been out in a while so anything is better than nothing! The perm in question was riddled with mixy last year so I stayed off for a bit and the numbers have come back nicely and no signs of the disease anywhere.......yet. It was a quick wander round the wooded boundary with nothing within range but I saw a few bolting for cover after they he2 points

Had my first outing of my 40th year working the dogs today just me, the whippets and ferrets. I got my first lurcher at the age of 8 and yes NL it was a beddy cross, it didn't take long before the terriers came along. my digging and running as changed these days but I'll be happy with another 20 years doing what I'm doing atb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWlw-wQggP42 points

Never had shooters pulled on us but one time a guy jump out a van with a pick. Tried to smash the doors in. Unfortunately for him the point got stuck and he couldn't get it free before he was dragged in the door and got a hiding. Silly b*****d.2 points

While disease and increased predator numbers will play a factor, I believe the wet conditions we have had (above normal) for the last 3 winters is also a big cause. On one of my permissions, the bottom half of visible holes in ditch banks were underwater, this probably equates to half the warren being wet or flooded and not ideal for breeding or rearing young. A lot of bucks I was catching or shooting looked like they had myxi - bulbous, lumpy heads, missing fur but their ears were also all torn up / partially missing. When they were gutted, no tell tale liver spotting either. Wer2 points

Never understood folks breeding lurchers or terriers for money. £3-400 is feck all compared to KC dogs like French bulldog and the like fetching upwards of £1800+ a pup. And let's be honest, probably going to better homes than your chop and change lurcherman who buys from the dealers. If I were to breed dogs for money I certainly wouldn't want some of the arseholes in the lurcher world at my place! ?2 points

To be a dealer in dogs, you need to have a certain mindset... I remember a commercial breeder once telling me,.."You would never be any good at it, Phil,..you ask the buyer, too many questions" All things considered, I've always regarded his poignant words,.. as a compliment... My Deerhound hybrids, Angel and Royal...circa the 1980s2 points
