This is what happens when you breed for colour, shape or size...what sort of cnut breeds, owns then passes on such a f***ing liability? Should start charging the parents with neglect charges etc..send them to jail along with the cnut that bred/passes on said dogs...why do folks have kids then decide they want an adult dog? Retarded clowns have killed their own child?9 points

Council's can sometimes be a bit on the officious side ,a bit small minded ,BUT there is a difference between insisting wind chimes are removed or getting letters warning about too many teddy bears on a grave and constructing (without permission ) a 37 ton piece of vandalism that will have an impact on other people who also have loved ones buried in the shared space of a cemetery .The shear selfish thoughtlessness of putting that piece of very expensive tat to act like a magnet for beer swilling half wits having sing songs to the 'juke box '(a juke box ! Ffs ) ...culture be dammed ..A cemetery8 points

? I've mostly kept jukels for the ferreting/netting job, and I try to keep the dogs nice and quiet, and well in control of their emotions... I rarely attend lurcher shows or Game Fairs, but at the ones I have visited, the racing or (stimulated coursing as my old pal Daergi used to call it ?) the frenzied barking and frequently manic behaviour, of both dogs and their owners,.. reminded me of that crazy Fly Ball carry on, at Crufts...? Racing and Hunting, are obviously different disciplines and I've enjoyed participating in both,...but, I know which path I would always choose...?8 points

got to agree with moonlighter and tatsblisters...nobody had herd the term longdog till the books came out and it is just splitting hares really .. also wasn't the word lurcher ...derived from the term "to lurch" it just meant the dog used it's brain and cut corners on a course against a hare...something that crossbred greyhounds learnt to do by there owners who poached for food on a regular basis...rather than the sporting gent who kept pure greys for competitive coursing... to my mind whether it's grey cross deerhound or collie it's still a lurcher7 points

It’s amazing what folk will argue about on here. Also I personally think the man who took the 15/16th grey all over the country to beat bull xs and other Lurchers in the fun Lurcher racing at shows was a bit of a sad human being. Tin hat on ?7 points

Mate had a heavily greyhound blooded lurcher that used to beat greyhounds regular at a flapping track. He was a fast lurcher that was beating slow greyhounds but would never of had a look in with decent greys.7 points

Those Eastern European countries are much nearer to the common definition of 'far right' than anything we see here. Spend time with a group of Polish or Ukrainian lads and see what I mean!! It's very unusual to find extreme racism or views that are very close to nazism in Germany for instance but in Poland or Ukraine its often the norm in young men. It just makes me laugh how the agenda now is that Ukrainians are totally like us, wonderful, open and 'forward' thinking. Equally listening to people saying that we must help poor Poland deal with the refugees as they simply can't cope the po6 points

Almost all of Eastern Europe are or at least were anti Jewish….they were tolerated but when the time came they were happy to see them get put on the train as a rule. Now days they label anybody that doesn’t want a tsunami of Africans and Asians to descend on the country as “Nazi”…….it’s another “Scare” word like “Racist” ! Pathetic !6 points

this deer situation is fully alien to me, just walked me dog and this old lad was at end of my rd, his mrs was with him to but out of the frame I was out rabbiting on an estate bout 20 mile away last night and the keeper offers me full deer access for coming out of my way to shoot the rabbits.6 points

Lurcher/long dog it’s just splitting hairs… coursing dogs are mostly saluki x greyhound but there still called a lurcher by pretty much 99% of people… at then the end of the day, there all mongrols or cross breeds…. A purpose bred cross breed, but still a cross breed.5 points

Problem when folk are paying so much for these mutts, no one wants to do the right thing when they end up with a liability they want to try and recoup some of their "investment" so they pass it on to the next dickhead.5 points

I agree entirely ! I was simply pointing out that all racers aren't longdogs. Lurcher racing isn't fun these days, it's extremely competitive with some very lucrative money and prizes on offer, especially in the big Irish game fairs, and, just as in whippet and Greyhound racing, cheating rears its ugly head. Cheers.5 points

I had never heard of the term longdog until i read Walshes book when it first came out in the 70s .5 points

In my opinion, the Saluki influence bring a hell of a lot to the table....? I am an devotee of the herding based lurcher, but my best ever catch dog, was nie on a Saluki.... I never won any coursing matches,.. but I did put a deposit on the house I now own through her exertions I was a born loser, going nowhere fast,...I will never forget that superbly game and skilful pot filler... Mercedes,. I thank you....?5 points

It maters not one jot to me in reality, my blood is thinker than most. I learned a long time ago that if everyone who says they hunt did so, the UK would be devoid of wildlife, and I have always said, there are far more hares caught in the bar room then in any field, and long my it remain that way.4 points

I had a whippet in the early 70's that had collie and Greyhound three generations back on his dams side, and Greyhound four generations back on his sires side, as can be seen on his pedigree, but was accepted by the B.W.R.A. as a "Whippet"; Was he a lurcher or a whippet ? To be honest, he caught as many hares as he won races, so it didn't worry me a hap'orth what he was classified as ! ? Cheers.4 points

Some of them are toe curling with how they crack on, it ludicrous. However, while not my cup of tea, it’s their dad and husband and if that’s what they want to do for him who is anyone to say otherwise…..we ain’t got to like it and it’s not our relative. Its a bit mean spirited imho, they may want to act like a load of c**ts but we don’t have too. As for the council playing to the mob and threatening to take it down, f***ing disgusting small minded pricks…..how would any of us like our dead relatives headstone torn down by some pointy nosed prick from the council ? I’ve seen loads of times at country show racing we’re someone has turned up with a straight greyhound blagging it as a lurcher saying it’s 1/16 bred so technically it’s a lurcher when in fact it’s a pure but there trying to deceive people. They don’t like it when there still beaten by a lurcher I’ve upset a couple of people with my old bitch she was a flying machine in the overs I only used to enter to do the odd race event when I felt I could be bothered but my bitches daughter done a fantastic job at pissing people off that thought they’d turn up with a straight greyhound or purpose bred rac4 points

There's been non-ped whippets such as Memphis Belle and Loves Lockdown, that have beaten greyhounds and broken track records at Greyhound tracks, but to be fair, they have a fair bit of Greyhound in them and are almost as big as greyhounds. Also it's usually the sprint distance , 270-300 yards they win over, not the longer distances. I remember matching a non-ped Whippet, Robbo, (Bilko x Frozen Kill ), against a Greyhound, over 150 yards on a whippet track and winning by about two yards. Emboldened, I was then suckered in to a return match over 270 yards at a Greyhound track for a far lar4 points

My nephew is on the same shit Started with Frenchies now he's doing these pocket bully monstrosities. At least the small ones are too fecked to do any damage though, it's the folk breeding 100lb beasts with no thought to temperament that are playing with peoples lives.3 points

Running a full grey or a heavily saturated grey in a lurcher race seems like an able bodied athlete competing in the paralympics to me. Or a transgender male competing with women.3 points

Can see where your coming from Wilf , but i think its the double standards of the council thats got peoples backs up , only last year the council telling people to remove cuddly toys from graves also the amount of sightseers walking over other graves and leaving litter not helping to matter3 points

I still rate his rouges and running dog book and in the 70s when it was first published the lurcher was still very much frowned upon by gamekeepers' landowners and such like and then to dedicate the book to the rogue's who kept them caused a lot of controversy back in the day from the shooting brigade.3 points

Admittedly the waters can get a bit muddied ...but broadly speaking I have got to agree with the hamster ,in my mind there is a distinct difference betwixt lurchers and longdogs ,temperament ,performance and function ,,there are exceptions ,there are mixed up breedings and there are similarities (they are all running dogs after all )....having said that ,I don't know why I'm commenting on the subject because I really couldn't give less of a fuk about it .3 points

No, they don't all use longdogs; I'll give you just four examples out of many.......there was a lad I know very well, used to be a member on here, who won almost every big lurcher race in the UK and Ireland with his 1/6th collie x 15/16th greyhounds. And how about Markbrick ? He won countless races with his collie/Greyhound/whippets. Or Geoff Fletcher with his Beddy/greys ? Taysider off here won the Scottish Championship with his beddy/Whippet/grey. As I said, your technically right with your "longdog" v "lurcher", but you're telling us something we already know ? What’s the point in having an opinion? You’ll just tell everyone it’s a saluki anyway.3 points

Technically you are correct, but being rather pedantic. One of these was deerhound/Greyhound, the other was Beddy/grey x deer/grey-Whippet/grey, but for the sake of simplicity I called them both lurchers. Cheers.3 points

Lurcher works days are numbered, in a society where we send people to prison for “hurty words” there’s just no way you can make a case for letting dogs kill wild life……nobody is buying what you are selling with that one in the modern world. Its a piss easy target for governments rather than dealing with real, serious stuff.3 points
