Beddy/bull/grey bitch...best all-rounder I've owned, came to me at 18 months old after a friend went over the wall.a dog that just seemed to make things happen and catch where ever we went, worked with terriers,on the lamp, around the nets and with the hawks..had to be something else in there because she had some tank, showed up plenty in her time, had some good times up and down the UK , especially Scotland...would love another like her?9 points

its a funny subject isn't it ....this hole thing of a dog opening up....yapping... as lurcher lads we are so programed to hate and detest opening up....its to point where most lads would never admit to having a dog that did for fear of being almost labelled as a lepper...."unclean unclean"... but lets put it in to perspective.....anybody that takes on a pat x whippet aint expecting a lurcher....there expecting a fast bushing dog....now i own a border terrier ...a good little busher she is......and honestly when right behind a rabbit in cover she yapps like mad.....and personally i th8 points

I’ll start. My father got this bitch off a traveller when she was around 1 year old I was about 12/13 at the time we never fully knew what was in her just told it was beddy whippet with a bitta Greyhound but my god she was some dog for rabbits day and night definitely the best dog I’ve ever owned to catch a rabbit be it a straight course across an open field, down rough terrain or in woodland she always seemed to make a catch. She took good few hares too on the lamp and took a few in the day too but I wasn’t interested in daytime hares and where I am in Ireland the fields are all small to7 points

3/4 saluki grey my best friend from 15 + never have another like her took it for granted the standard she set a old Shepard told me you’ll never have another better than your first an he was right I’ll never have the time or the open opportunity’s available to me that I did have with her and I’ll never be satisfied with another dog again everyone takes the p... out of saluki greyhounds but I’ve only every run small fields or heather moorland and the things that bitch done would change many opinions on them ...... either one of a kind or she was given the freedom and situations to make th7 points

Nice litter of GWP pups here got a few pups going to lurcher and terrier lads to be used as bushing, hunting and marking dogs.7 points

Don’t take this the wrong way but I think most of that is based on theory not practice. Most pure beds I see would shit themselves at a big rabbit ? go and have a look at the terrier and the bushing section and see how many working beds you can find. All of the good old Beddy x whips and greys from distant years ago which are held up as great dogs, would have been bred out of beds that worked to ground. So your point re pats being earth dogs is a moot point to an extent. I could show you a pat dog that will stay for 12 hours, is taller than most beddys, natural retriever, great nose,7 points

I’m struggling to see how folk find it such a hard concept ? lots of folk keep Beddy x whip types. Bred out of a whippet and a terrier that maybe once looked at a bush and mouthed a rabbit. Alternatively they could breed the same size and type Lurcher out of a terrier that would do 12 hours to ground getting its head chewed in the dark against a much bigger quarry without giving an inch and then once out be racing for more despite looking like it’s gone ten rounds with a meat mincer ........ which realistically is going to produce the more driven, harder little dog. And I know of plenty of pat7 points

Some folk only need or want a small terrier based runner. That’s what makes them happy and does the job they want. It’s that simple. What folk are trying to say is - that a pat of the right type would do a better job or producing said runner of said type, than a modern Beddy. The ones bred out of modern Beddy that made good little dogs, the Beddy probably had a load of pat in it anyhow . can we dispense with the laughing at each other and running each other dogs down ? Or is that just now this places vibe?6 points

Wasn't actually mine, but I had him in my kennel a few times when his owner, my pal, was between wives, houses, whatever, and I worked my dog alongside him for a few years; Bruce the Rescue Dog; Cheers.5 points

? Some interesting and thought provoking comments.... I cannot think of a better sporting day than being out and about with a brace of bushing tykes, and a couple of fast lurchers.. In my mind, its the Sport of Kings, especially when you hit upon an area where the rabbits are 'on top' and not simply dropping straight to ground...? Such fabulous places are rare and at a premium these days.... Obviously, its not just rabbits that will be pushed out of cover, so, it can get really exciting I was out ratting and rabbiting with this rangy critter, and I could not help thinking,.what5 points

FFS, mC......some bloke is going to let you take pics of his dogs with injuries that could get his door kicked in, and put them up on an open forum ????? Im sure you think you are just having a laugh, a wind up, but , please, give your head a shake, mate ! Cheers.5 points

He was probably the first posh person that I met. Used to love his announcements at shows "Jeck Russell dogs ring one, Laykie bitches ring two", just sounded so different. I say posh (and I am sure others here will know far better than me) but believe he was born into a mining family and funded his own education to eventually become a barrister. Some achievement for a lad from a pit village, particularly back then.5 points

Just for you lads to know. We sent him off right yesterday. It was a tough day for all concerned, but it was a proper welsh send off. He’d have loved it, but he’d have been too busy running about chatting to everyone, laughing with folk and checking everyone was happy.5 points

Thats the whole point."a good bedlington"Do they even exist anymore? You hear about them but never spoken to a proper digging man who's ever seen one.5 points

If a Beddy x whippet was chasing a fox and that fox went to ground and said Beddy x whippet could fit after it - I’d be questioning why it didn’t wedge itself in ? plenty of Beddy x drop to ground and a hell of a lot of them yip in cover or when chasing. I don’t think there is any more chance of any of that happening with a pat x whippet and ultimately if you keep little 20” or below terrier xs then stuff like yippibg and dropping in, is always on the cards. They aren’t being kept as flat out runners, for lamping etc. Most lads are using them as little vermin dogs around cover, barns, holes et5 points

People are getting carried away here. Nobody is trying to claim that a bedlington is as game as a patterdale or anything. We are talking about their uses as a cross, why on earth would you need to use a hard mute digging dog to put over a whippet for a bit of rabbiting in and around cover. Now like I said I'm not knocking the cross but is it really needed when there's tried and tested dogs already doing the business.4 points

Old dogs never die, they live on in our minds ,we still see them ,young and fit, almost floating over the ground to strike at a cony or picking up one in the lamp .Gone but never forgotten RIP Meg.4 points

This bitch is well gone now ,touched by "old man time ,Dee was one of the very best bushing dogs I've owned & had the pleasure to spend time with out on the hill .Unwanted by a farm hand she came to me ,very thin & covered in fleas .She was frightened ,hiding in the back of the kennel & when I reached into the box she came forward & fanged my hand ,drawing blood. She had been chasing the farmhands chickens & I could tell she had been beaten & miss treated .Dee showed me within several days she was very gun shy & at the first signs of the gun being used she would bo4 points

Thing is no one knows who does what. I’ve seen you on here laughing at and mocking a lad who I know has superb dogs abs kills more than most folk I’ve ever met while at the same time saying how great or experienced a man is who I know for a fact does very little. See it all the time on here, been a few dogs everyone says use as a stud if you want x type. Reality is most folk never seen says dogs in the flesh let alone run. One dog I’m thinking of couldn’t catch f**k all, average rabbit dog at best, I’ve seen it run. Yet men always bum it up on here ? one lad on here I know comes across as a mi3 points

I think too many over the years (myself included) have been too obsessed with type names etc. Old lads years ago only required the dog to do its job, weren't fussed on breeding and just put a good dog to a good dog.3 points

A friend of mine once mated a Beddy/Whippet with a top class working Patterdale to get some bushing pups. They were bonny looking little dogs, but I couldnt see the point. They were almost certain to drop in, so why not just get a Terrier ? Being only a 1/4 whippet, they probably wouldn't have the speed to catch in the open, so why not just stick with the Beddy/whippets or whippets ? Maybe they suited him, and it's only MY opinion, he was happy, so I guess they did what HE wanted them to do ? Cheers.3 points

Also it seems like there is becoming a shift in people’s attitudes to small terrier bred lurchers, the beddy whippet would be a few places down on my list if I wanted a whippet terrier cross. Russell pat or bull whippet from the right stuff would be my choice3 points

Exactly right mate, it’s not all about running in a field people breed lurchers to do dozens of different jobs on all types of quarry and terrain. That’s the beauty of breeding types3 points

I think back in the day a lot of places where there was double fences etc , the hares were easier. The hares didnt have to out run the dog but rather use the obstacles to evade capture. This type of land was normally pasture land . And as such is easier to rum and turn on . A very good dog could bully the hare away from the bad fences and the races were usually at the minute, minute and half . Whereas where mchull runs it's a test of endurance. Yes a good dog can kill anywhere . But bring a fen dog up to most places in Scotland that's never been taught the wire . You will blank . Take a t3 points

I owned and bred wheaten lurchers for a long time and I've never had a single one open up, no doubt there's been some that have but I've never even heard of a genuine wheaten x opening up.3 points

Gaelic is a religion here mate. You get football towns and Gaelic towns although every town has a Gaelic team. If I’m honest Football here just about holds on imho, there clubs where it’s big and is supported and it shows then there’s the little village team who struggle for numbers and funding every year. Top flight is nice, 15 quid to get in for me and the boy, right up by the pitch, smallish grounds of like 5000 capacity which are never full. Cup of pissy tea and a dog burger, jobs a good one3 points

I fish for them all year round, theres no season on them so its your choice, i dead bait for them too in summer, and havent killed a pike yet, theyre more active in summer and can have fun on lures and spinners, just get the big long disgorgers or crush 2 exposed barbs if your worried about damaging them. And get them back in soon as possible, youll have good fun catching them as you dont know how big the one biting at the time is.3 points

One of the lads coming with me is going to auction a deer stalk with an overnight stay for one or two people in a shepherds hut in Sussex. You don’t need a gun he will supply everything and will give you the carcass of whatever you shoot and the head if you want it.3 points
