I don't think it's easy to tell until you have worked closely with both. In terms of temperament, Cockers are soft as shit, they are very endearing little dogs away from the field, often wanting to be in contact with you. I decided to try a shepherds type thing with them this time While I was skinning the first one, I found the pellet just under the skin behind it's shoulder - it looked like it had passed right through the head, neck and shoulder and, come to a stop before exiting.
