  1. Thought I would be working till I drop but have decided to knock it all on the head and start enjoying myself, going to get my motor home this winter and spend a few months travelling round England until the old dogs are gone then winters in the sun have a few months left to tidy up some loose ends and then I,m out, happy days life’s to busy for working have so much I still want to do and realise that time is running down

  2. “Defined by my work”….that’s a brilliant and very overlooked observation there mate. I didn’t realise how much a part of my personality my way of earning a living was…….I feel like almost a completely different person and in some ways I miss “that bloke” now and again. However, things are always better in the memory than in reality and what I don’t miss is how the world of business is full of pricks now instead of proper chaps, I don’t miss traffic wardens and £2k a year in parking tickets and fixed penalty’s and VOSA, I don’t miss the government helping themselves to my hard work, I

  4. I tried to retire a couple of years ago but ended up working again having been brought up with a strong work ethic I found myself riddled with some sort of working class guilt for not working. I didn't realise how much I was defined by my work. Roll forward 2 years and I now feel more ready/buggered . Good luck enjoy it. We've only got one shot.

  17. you might be right , but the way i see it, if the old dogs in question have deff give 100% in the hunting field all there life , i think it only fair to the animal to show some compassion to it . dont get me wrong if you had fecker dont hunt for and only him self, picks his runs, or wont do a fox, or bigger stuff, etc. i wouldn't keep it . so if they been hard working dog for 8- 9 years i look after them. it very rare that you have kennel full of all similar ability , thats why there lot in pounds etc .My last 2 dogs bryn who was very good rabbit dog, but nothing else . i wanted dog do

  19. I retired 20 years ago, aged 51. I think the secret to retirement is to keep busy with something you enjoy. Ive got the dogs, two allotments with hens, ducks, quail and a few game fowl, I like to grow veggies, it’s almost a full time job, but I enjoy it. I just thought one day “ kids are gone, house is paid for, bit money in the bank, keep my travel benefits with the airline, why work until I’m too old to enjoy my retirement ?” I wanted to retire at 50, but was asked to stay on for a year, which in retrospect was a good thing, it gave me time to be sure I was doing the righ

  20. I know exactly what you mean mate, "working class guilt" is a great way to describe it... I'm not ready for retirement, but even booking holidays, having a day off etc and I get that weird guilt feeling.. self employed all my life, no boss, no one to answer to but still feel like it! lol

  28. 70 on March 3rd. Had some cabins for the family up in Ashbourne. What a weekend we had. Wifey just booked a nice little holiday end of April on Cape Verdi. She’s just done a deal with the bosses for 2 day week for the next 2 years in an administration capacity. All in all happy days. When you’ve run the race it’s time to give up. Jok.

  31. I had just driven over the QE2 Bridge when my wife phoned me and said “America is under attack, can you come home please” She was working in Lakeside and they had shut that down and she had been sent home. I was heading back to my warehouse to unload then heard on the radio that they had evacuated Canary Wharf and most of London was heading home. Turned round, went home and we went round my mums because she was old and lived alone and it seemed like an appropriate course of action. Sat and watched it unfold on the telly, can still remember watching those poor b*****ds jump

  32. When I was young, even though I always loved my dogs they had to do their bit and old ones and inferior ones couldn't. My dogs now are like my family to me, be they old or young. I think I admire the loyalty now more than ability and because they are with me 24/7 the bond with them is the strongest ever. A guy offered to buy my grew off me the other week and I said, would you part with one of your kids? fck off. That's how I feel now.

  35. I reckon a lot of us change as we become older,...I certainly have.... Its a natural part of advancing into old age, nothing to be ashamed of,.. but,.. it does take some getting used to.. Back in the day, I never used to keep my old dogs,....but now, my mind set has changed and whilst it would perhaps be foolishly andromorphic to think of a canine in quite the same way as a human,.. or some kind of fur baby.......I no longer begrudge them a well deserved retirement....

  36. Something I’ve found a bit strange lately is if I’m driving my work van is if i see someone walking a really old dog a thought comes in my head of good ol dog or maybe even bless or something of that nature i don’t know if it’s I’m getting a bit sentimental with age or if it’s because I’ve a old runner here that keeps the sofa warm. I never used to think like that I seem to get the thought of I bet that’s been a good loyal dog for its owner even if it’s only a pet dog. Any of you lads/lasses as you’ve aged/matured abit sort of think like that or am I just going soft in the head

  46. Well, I have promised some cooked produce photos. Tonight's tea, double pork chops....... Bloody gorgeous and now I am stuffed! Genuinly have grown to appreciate food more. We have all got used to accepting shite for convenience. Was also thinking tonight, whilst I am not personally religious, I can understand the history of saying grace and being thankful for the produce of the land.
