A Plummer lurcher Brian gifted to my friend , I had the pleasure to watch work . I good nose on it and a good steady ferreting dog and generally a nice natured mutt. Also in one of his books he put a pic up of the last place in Scotland were a wolf was killed. Many moons later I was up there on my annual pilgrimage up there rabbiting for a week and took a pic of it. Still in my old photo albums now6 points

I'd say the main reason they are the main victims is because dogs aren't stupid and there primal instinct is to pick a weak target, but get a 100 pound plus lunatic with bad intentions and you better hope your in earshot of help.5 points

Maybe I'm being cynical, but he could have bought the Dr title from the Internet. Anybody can assume the title Dr. I also doubt very much whether he was a boxer in America. Lots of his claims don't add up. But lots of writers are fantasists. Nobel prize winner Hemingway made lots of claims which don't bear scrutiny. Not that I'm suggesting the two had similar abilities as writers lol Talking about Walter Mittys, I've also fancied buying a a dog collar from ebay and seeing how people react. I fancy going into supermarket, paying for stuff and saying " bless you my child". Just for fun. If5 points

For me growing up , I loved the books. As boson said took me to a place in the countryside I wanted to be. To meet the rogues and hear there storys and see there dogs. They deffo helped me fall in love with running dogs . Funny thing is and I've told this story before. An old mate of mine was a good friend of Brian's,. So I ad the opportunity to go and stay with him for a week. He was in Caithness at this point. But wouldn't let me take my beloved pride of joy my 3/4 collie grey up there with me ( which was bought I may add off the back of his books lol ) so me being a stubborn tear away and5 points

Just ripping out for a patio and driveway for someone today, said he’s put me down for 3 days, I’m about done, couple of hours on Friday and two grab load’s away, to be fair I’ve pulled my puddings out today and I’m knackered I noticed the old boy next doors having a fight with a flat tyre on his car so i hopped the fence and put his spare on for him, rang my mate at the tyre place and sent him down there, he kept trying to give me 20 quid which I refused, so when he came back from my mates he brought me some flowers he had cut from his garden, they really just don’t make people like tha4 points

You aint dealing with one decent sized dog if it has bad intentions and a bit of bollock to it.Unless of course you're one of them that knows the old"pull its legs apart and split its heart trick"4 points

Take the book from the shelf, nonchalantly look left, right, then left again then slip the book into your school blazer inside “Shoplifting” pocket or your school haversack, depart library with your “Treasure” #booktheft101 One thing I have wondered, what was he a Dr of?4 points

Spot on I agree. He opened up a world of storytellers, book writers and posers. Ive read a lot of his books, and derived entertainment from them, in the same way I would from watching the office. He was a great influence on a lot of young lads in starting out, but he didnt encourage he just made most feel inferior because they could never achieve the kind of feats he spoke of as normal. A lot of lads were frustrated that their little Collie lurchers were not smashing Foxs every week like Merle!! What a joke!! A dynasty!! Grandiose, deluded, like a lot of school teachers.4 points

We used to race up at Stirling track only on the straight (my dads choice he was ex greyhound man argued and wouldn’t run the whippets as he thought the bend was to tight used to run like and figure of 9 with another 50 yard straight after) coulpe bigger dogs one boy ran maybe 23/24 seemed massive thinking about it and our two were 21/5 and 22 Tiny little bitch 17/5 to shoulder she done everything on the straights can still remember her now and her height funny never remember weights tbh my brain doesn’t do weight for some reason terrific little bitch and they’re was plenty cr3 points

just a update on young whippet, 22 months now, not a big bitch 19tts and 23 pounds. catching quite regularly, rabbit, squirrels, mice etc. marking and hunting up spot on, try her lamping in September. a few setbacks, stitches in chest and had leg stapled, but she's very committed, overall really happy with first whippet.3 points

If you haven't got quality bitches then any line is destined for failure, I personally think dogs take after the dam and bitches after the sire.3 points

Interesting subject, have to say I agree with Paulus from what I’ve seen myself the bitch has more influence. I’d take a pup out of a good bitch & and average dog, but I wouldn’t take a pup if it was the other way round. That being said I’ve known very few litters where dog & bitch were both fully tested and top of their game3 points

Could have been mate I was told years ago by a lad from Doncaster who knew Plummer very well that Plummer had got recognition from Mensa and other intellectual bodies. I only met him once at Chatsworth country fair when he was signing books and pulled him about crossing two lurcher to lurchers and said and to this day I still stand by the comment will produce more hardy versatile lurchers than breeding pups out of a track greyhound bitch3 points

Agree, he did often talk down to his readers. I can remember feeling uneasy about some of his opinions which came from his social class and not mine. I can remember one article in which he spoke down about people who had tattoes. He stated he would never employ anybody with a tattoo. And that was for a kennel assistant..a shit shoveller. I don't have any tattoes but people can do what they want and shouldn't be denied a job because of someone's bias.3 points

Plummer brought the world of lurchers, terriers and ferrets out into the public arena. Previously, the only time you saw the word 'lurcher' was in the now defunct Exchange and Mart which was a weekly magazine where you could buy all, sorts. A bit like an offline Ebay. I guess he set Hancock up in business and despite producing some duffers, he also produced some cracking dogs. Those who knew him reckon he was a wrong un, or partly a wrong un, but he did introduce a lot of folk into the sport because of his writings. I believe his terriers delivered what they said on the tin.3 points

It’s all part of the decline and fall of the West. Just this morning, two people have been dropped from the list of prospective Tory candidates to stand as MP’s when MI5 informed the government that they may be spying for China. This is not the same two who are out on bail suspected of spying for China whilst employed as “researchers” in the House of Commons. Why aren’t they all in Belmarsh ! If this had been Russia, China, Iran they would disappear and never be seen again! Im not advocating we do the same as authoritarian countries, but we are definitely seen as a soft2 points

Woman arrested in shop after being detained by staff. This prompts protests by 'the community'. The business has been boarded up after the crowds start kicking the front of the shop. Police thank the crowd for remaining calm!!!! Is there any person anywhere that genuinely believes that the police would be thanking people for remaining calm if this had been a group of white people attacking the shop? .....to the extent that it needed boarding up! Anyone who claims there isn't an anti white anti English agenda at play is either stupid or a lier. Peckham pro2 points

One of my brothers fired a home made bow and arrow made out of bamboo at me. I can remember my other brothers shouting "no" and a bamboo arrow hit me straight in the eye. One of those moments where everything stood still. f**k me it was painful. I had a red eye for a week but no major damage. My poor old mother was run ragged with us, so we told her I had been stung by a bee.lol2 points

Only fault I found in his later writings was his promotion of collie crosses due to his mate setting up a collie x breeding farm and other lurcher crosses referring them to bitzas as to seem inferior to the collie x . I know when I bred the two dogs in my profile picture in 84 both of them a mix of beddy grey x collie grey with a touch of deerhound down the line a couple of lads who had booked a pup chose to go to Hancock instead as they had been took in by Plummers sales pitch. The terriers I am on about were rough haired mongrelly types he had brought from Wales though by all accounts very g2 points

My main problem mate is the short notice I had, would of loved a bit of notice to sort a few things out and meet a few lads as you know, but I,m here to do some tv work and have only just had a quick look at the schedule which is a bit hectic, left home at 8.30 this morning literally just got to my digs 10mins ago and am having my first coffee since I left, going to the Westmorland show in the morning then off to the mere in the afternoon until dark busy busy2 points
