It would be a start if the U.K. paid these girls proper money instead of pissing it away on managers who couldn’t change a sticking plaster ! My wife and daughter work in the care sector and here it is connected to the health service so they get paid proper money with automatic yearly increase. My daughter took herself to a course, passed her basic level 5 and she is copping a grand a week some weeks (she could do it every week if she wanted but likes to enjoy it a bit as well, who wouldn’t at 20) and she has enough time in lew saved up for 4 weeks off paid on top of her holiday.7 points

My comfort blanket is that my little lad has 3 siblings all older than him to look out for him when I pop my clogs. I worry like you lads but I try and be sensible about it because other stuff I have worried about as he has grown worked itself out. He is only 10 but I was chatting to him in the car and saying all the “one day you’ll be a daddy and find someone who loves you” and he said “Nah, can’t be bothered, I’m going to have 2 dogs and live on my own !” Lol6 points

Its F**king ridiculous.I had someone a little while ago trying to tell me that it wasnt fair that kids who went to grammer got a better education just because their parents were well off.Im a single parent who only manages to go to work everyday breaking my back as a groundworker because I get amazing support fom my parents regarding having her before and after school. Why shouldn't she get an excellent education if shes got the ability to make use of it and got the chance of it through hard work and I know a lot of the other parents from her school are just ordinary working class people.Tbh a6 points

Although ive always liked the social aspect of pubs i didnt even start drinking alcohol until 6 or 7 years ago and just cant imagine the out of control life that drink/drugs causes it would terrify me to not be in control of myself....dont get me wrong i have the occasional silly moments after a few too many but to live your life in a constant state like that must be a horrible way to live.6 points

Moved the 3 chicks into the bigger brooder. These are 5weeks now so could go out from next week but I'm guna keep them inside a little longer with it being winter, maybe till 8 or 9 week, see how they do for size/space! These were the last chicks of 2023. If I have a Cockell out the three then my other Cockerell may become my first table bird so I can mix blood line. Probably base it on how the birds turns out. Next part of this plan when the girls start laying is to have 2 pens, one for layers and a seperate one for growers for table and refreshing my laying hens when needed. That w5 points

I don’t think that’s odd, I think if we are all honest we want our kids to be better than us. jmho5 points

Im quite thankfull that shes got into a really good grammer school that also has an excellent SEN team that do an amazing job with any pupils there that have little quirks or just need extra help in certain areas.Id hate to think what would of happened if she'd have ended up in one of the shitty comps like the one I went to surrounded by little toe rags who half of them haven't been taught right from wrong4 points

Out today, 3 rats from 2 marks and flushed long ears, rabbits and lots of birds. Dogs winded something in a small bunch of gorse and briars, terrier hunted the line back about 30mts and marked a hole and started digging. Gave him a hand with spade had this lad out soon enough. Pics don't really do it justice, pig of a rat.3 points

I was about 13/14 and sat in a maths lesson staring out the window as always. There was a piece of waste ground next to the school covered in brambles and a few trees, a couple of lads appeared with a ferret box and started to lay a few nets, out came the ferret and in no time a rabbit bolted out of the brambles closely followed by a whippet lurcher that i hadn't noticed previously and it took the rabbit in what seemed like a nano second! I was absolutely hooked from that moment on and have kept lurchers for over 35 years. Phil3 points

At school we got by with the normal stripping lead off church roofs or nicking it from the local builders merchant, copper and scrap from an abandoned Fisons chemical plant down the road etc etc Then I was waking along with my pal when he got lifted by the old bill, unknown to me he had blagged the local garage with a crossbow and made his getaway on a 50 special with the grand sum of about 200 bensons and £30 ! Last we saw of him for a couple of years and he was a basket case on the drugs when they let him out of Young offenders. Just shy of 15 and aimed out of school me and a3 points

When I was at school I delivered papers in the evening, delivered for the local butcher in the morning and was a butcher boy in the shop on Saturday. All my money went on Levi jeans and sta-press, Ben Sherman shirts, made to measure suits from Burtons and every gadget and gizmo I could get for my lambretta ! Cheers.3 points

Id have liked to have got pocket money when I was at school.Any money my stepfather had that didnt go on bills went over the bar of the village boozer.Anything I soon learned to earn myself either car washing, fruit picking in the summer or beating in the winter went on baccy,2 star for for whatever stripped down track bike I had at the time and by 15 puff and acid tabs3 points

That is a big worry. My daughter is super academic but I can never see her being street smart. She is so kind and good hearted which is how her mother and myself have encouraged her to be that she just experts everyone else to be exactly the same.As much as Im trying to let her have a bit more independance now shes at secondary school its hard as like you say theres too many people that will take advantage of her kind, trusting nature3 points

I think the tv adverts have changed dramatically. Children with hare lips and cleft pallets, Children with glaucoma, Amputees, Obese people dancing, Almost every family has a mixed race couple and children. Homosexual couples. Adverts with overt and covert political innuendo. A far cry from the old adverts where everything looked perfect Mind you, I do laugh at the one with the scruffy looking bloke selling potatoes and asks "what is your preferred method of digital currency" and the black bloke says " I've got a fiver" but the seller replies "nah..3 points

Test the batteries with a meter it's not unknown to have a new battery thats dud. Turn the box on put in near a TV that is on if no static you have a duff connection somewhere. Take the screw out of the middle of the on/off depth wheel then remove the mother board out and look for broken wire. (Little tip when resembling and putting the screw back in put little dab of wifey's nail varnish on the screw to stop it coming loose out in the field.) If you have static near TV then check the collar batteries. Clean the copper pin in the centre of the collar with emery nail file.3 points

It is. But as a nation we should aim to train our own brain surgeons, not import them from countries that we then fund through aid. Sucking any talent out of developing countries stops them developing, and leads to more people trying to flea those places3 points

Similar mate...never ever been a poor me type, there are loads of people living far worse than me, I saw a few things as a kid that you just shouldn't see.. but it makes you who you are... I hate people using bad past experiences as a reason for their shit behaviour or lack of morals etc...life is too short mate.3 points

Good thread this, interesting to see people's takes on happiness in work/life and what different people see as success... no two people are the same in that regard.. From my side of things... I'm a bit of a workaholic, it could be seen as a fault perhaps, but that is my character, I'm not one for sitting down much and genuinely enjoy being busy, I feel guilty (or thar sort of feeling) when I'm not "at it"... I think I've always been that way... I'm also a gambler and enjoy the risk/reward of business, been self employed since I was 18, so am past worrying about anyone other than me makin3 points

After a very moving funeral yesterday im in a somewhat reflective mood and reading through this topic i realise that through all the if's,but's and maybe's we can only make the best of who and what we are.....and as a young lad in the areas i grew up you amounted to nothing if you wasnt willing to take chances so as extremely boisterous, high energy, driven and very motivated young men chasing money myself and a few pals fell into crime and a couple of us did very well through life but having lost around 12 years in total and pretty much all of family life not a day go's by i dont wish id grown3 points

I always think with those geezers that it’s because they didn’t make a pig of themselves when they were young…..got to make a pig of yourself, then you don’t spend the next 50 odd years thinking “I wonder ?”2 points

My eldest grandson has autism though not as severe as some and due to his mother's strict stance with him he works at a place near his home that makes high end sheds and summer houses and such like and is very conscientious at his work fortunately he his surrounded by a decent bunch of lads but worries a lot about his job when work drops off. It makes me sick when I see young lad's around me stinking of skunk and hanging around local shops being a nuisance the same age who have never done a day's work in there lives .2 points
