I’d be pretty much the same as that mate and I also don’t subscribe to this “my body, my choice” way I of thinking for a couple of reasons. Sometimes it's nice to put you both somewhere...and just watch what's moving around from place to place... teaches them patience and steadies them up...I've never had a problem with any pup,f***ing off in to the distance,or hunting up on the lamp if it missed something ...from pups I make sure they want to be around me and please me... hardest thing, I've personally found to be honest is getting a dog to switch on to hunting the hills/forestry blocks,has to be 100% with stock ,hunting, despatching stuff well away from you

I consider myself a “dog worker” , not a “ dog trainer”, but I start a pup/ young dog on a 30 yard long leash, it trains them not to range too far, and to return when you call them. 30’ long leash and a rabbit skin training dummy. Easy to teach your dog recall, retrieving and not to range too far ; You will cover far more ground with a dog that quarters a field and ranges about 30 yards around you, and find more game than just “point and slip”. The size doesn't make much difference . The operator's travel time, fuel etc are the same . I'm a bit soft though. There are are times when a call out to a tiny nest that the householder could've dealt- with with a rolled up newspaper brings out the charitable streak in me. Get it some salmon heads ,kilo bags of sprats and a couple of litres of salmon oil...pup will be glowing pal,I give my pups a bowl of milky Weetabix in the morning,small meal of meat ,fish,tripe at dinnertime,after the last meal at teatime,I give them a meaty bone to chew on,keep them quiet until the morning ...my last lurcher bitch was the runt...ended up the second biggest dog/bitch in the litter
