  1. Personally,... I enjoyed reading the books, I perused several in their original, rough manuscript layout,..oh yes, those were exciting times... And there is no denying the fact, that certain books penned back in the day, enthralled and excited many, many pubescent hunting men. However,...times have changed, life has moved on, and nowadays an enquiring mind is able to receive answers to questions that in earlier times would have been impossible to ask...The truth is, for many years, it was not possible to offer any critique or politely debate a questionable claim,..it just was
  2. "Now that's what I call a Ferreting Man"...
  3. Yes, she has been a really good pal to me, Micky...supported me 100%,..in all my trials and tribulations... Married 43 years now, ... never regretted a single moment...
  4. That's what I like to see,...young bucks getting into the rabbiting game...
  5. Visited Colin's place in Dorking 30 years ago, he gave me several wax proof coats to Field Test,..and hopefully, speak well of.. My wife still has one and wears it when out on the shoot... I was amazed to see his workforce of Indian ladies, all sewing away in a big old shed... Halcyon Days, dear reader... Halcyon Days.
  6. That really is my favorite style of rabbiting,...alas, we do not have such fabulous terrain, darn sarf,...you are so lucky...
  7. I suppose its all down to what mood you are in,..sometimes,.. its best to keep events to yourself. As for photos,..well, your images can end up n the strangest of places,...ya got to be sensible what you put up,..and obviously, what you say... Its a shame,..but it was inevitable I suppose,... Maybe the New Year will see a change and lads will post more,...I do hope so...
  8. Goodonya Barrie... As a veteran hunter myself, I really do admire loyalty to one's old pals ... Obviously, few of us are perfect,...we have all probably done and said,.. a plethora of silly things,... But,..all things considered,..if a man is a genuine kinda fellah... I am always loath to bad mouth him. It is so easy to indulge in gossip and rely upon hearsay,...the facts are,... the facts rarely lie......
  9. Unlike yourself, I am privileged to have met ALL the names mentioned,...and I would have to agree that Chapman, Newcombe (and most definitely) Bert Gripton, knew the score as regards working dogs....as for Plummer,.well,...in all honesty,...I could not say the same...
  10. I'm in the same boat,..experience tells me to, rest, lead walking only and,.blister, blister...
  11. Not sure exactly when,..but there was certainly Bull crosses darn sarf,...when I was using my Deerhound hybrids for the deer job... If only I had known about them...
  12. Sadly, nowadays, it is a buyers market, as opposed to a seller's one... Most lads want to buy a pup from the best lines available, they literally want to 'up their odds' for success... Nothing wrong in that,..unfortunately, whereas, back in the day when lurchers and ferrets were not bred in such numbers, folk tended to make the best of what they were given. Today, a lot of folks breed pups, for whatever reason, and some don't think far enough ahead, fondly imagining that their precious litter will all be found homes, no hassle...This action frequently results in a large surplus of st
  13. The Victor Break Back is a superb killer of rats, and the modified Victor,.. is even better. Cheap as chips, easily set,... and lethal...
  14. Bert was old school,..and same as myself, he could not abide fraudster, liars, and users,....and to his credit,... he always made his feelings known... I enjoyed his company when we met, and I've still got a heap of old correspondence that he sent to me, written in his own unmistakable script. How good it was to have his support,.. at a bad time in my life,...Bert Gripton, gone but not forgotten...
  15. Too right... Back in the day, we used to do really well, selling rabbits at most of the local deadstock actions,..then, the night shooting craze took off... Prices dropped drastically and the market was soon flooded... Such is life...
  16. Men who are seriously into their digging,..know exactly the right stuff to keep... Personally,..for the mouching game and roustabout, bush busting sport, I always liked a nice Bedlington/Border or a Border/Russel... We have had some memorable hunts on the rabbits, deer, and foxes,... wish I could have that time, back again,... if only for a while...
  17. Feel for ya fellah... Lost some of my old working stock a few seasons back...and it sure does hurt... Nowadays, I feel it best (and safer) not to say too much to anyone, about anything... Its a shame, cos I do like a good yarn about the Dawgs 'n' ferrets,...but unfortunately,..that is the way it has to be...
  18. Whatever new trap that passes the criteria, as set by those in charge,...will not be cheap...
  19. Never been 'into' all this sport business... If my hunting dogs get onto a quarry,.whatever it might be, I want it dead, in the van,.on its way to a customer or our freezer,...belly up, finito...
