  1. Superb advice from 'men who knows',..many thanks...
  2. The Plains in Wiltshire is a really awkward place to play, 'bolt and chase' games... Tried it when I first put a ferret to ground there, I quickly decided to throw a few nets down... Also,.I reckon the place is a queer old area for the smaller types of running dog,..the terrain just doesn't seem to favor them. Obviously not as rocky as some other places, but plenty bad enough. ....I used to like having a wander across the vast area, but not been on for several years.
  3. Lovely group of dogs on view, ideal for the rabbiting enthusiast I only hunt a few hedgerow rabbits now, I don't really need a dog with terrific pace..it would just be a waste... We only get a quick, 'dash and grab', so its either, one in the bag, or one waving us goodbye...
  4. Using Haix Scouts for this season,..just covered them with a layer of leather wax that came with my old Meindl Dovres. Like most things in life, 'Time will tell'...
  5. The horse flesh is good tucker,.ya just gotta be sensible and not let them gorge on it... I like to mix all the various raw meats (lamb carcasses, chicken backs, rabbits, etc ) with oily fish...sardines, pilchards... To be honest, I probably grub my dogs far too well, cos same as myself, they are lazy beggars and don't do a whole fecking lot...
  6. Used the pans for years Wolfdog,...originally we used flattened out bean tins to create our trigger plates,..they worked well... Bodygrip traps are immensely versatile, but as Micky has said, ...we just don't have enough, wilderness areas to use them to their fullest potential... I have been fortunate in as much as,..in the early days before our trapping laws became so Draconian (and I predict they will get even more so)....I was staying amidst a remote district, no people, no dogs or nosy folk with prying eyes, and foolish fingers,..and I set my traps accordingly... In such a s
  7. Whilst I commend you upon your most exhaustive research,...I would place scant faith or credence in the plethora of antique data,..much of it is simply hearsay, presented in different forms...I can only talk from personal experience... Historically, I can remember seeing what was commonly called, a Dorset Blue, ..it was at a country livestock market and stood out like a sore thumb amongst a sea of border collies. Indeed, my own father frequently had Collie pups of a Bare Skinned variety, as well as a few Shag types, in the same litter of Welsh sheepdogs. Locally I have seen heavy coated h
  8. Seen a few Blue Shags locally, back in the day. I doubt many stockmen bother with them now... I used a real hard-bitten example over my Mercedes bitch, back in the 1980s,...produced some real characters...
  9. Goodonya, Nature can be so cruel,..you did a good thing...
  10. The 'Great Game',...not many can be bothered to play it these days...
  11. it's a difficult situation... Nobody likes being done over, used or abused,..sadly, every time I have taken steps to secure retribution,..it has always ended badly... If you rip down the fence, it could be construed, as being criminal damage,..and Judge Rinder will surely take the poor neighbor's side. Personally, I would put it down to experience, and walk away, knowing in your heart of hearts, that "You won't get fooled again"...
  12. For guys that were out of work, or resting, good clean Hares were always worth a few quid,..so you had to take them, anyway that you could There was a vast difference in sport and profit hunting....and the hares just made up part of the weekly bag, alongside the pheasants and Roe... Nowadays, I have a pension to fall back on,...so no more sitting up behind nets for me...
  13. Sometimes its cathartic to look back at the times spent with a veteran hunter, (canine and human) and to think about all the years, experiences, memories and good times that have gone forever
  14. Ferreted Watership Down several years ago,.. sold all the rabbits to a local Butcher,... He hung the shushis, nice and tidy. They looked great, they all had fabulous thick winter coats, they looked prime. The man advertised them with a girt big sign ...Same old script, "You've read the book, seen the film, etc, etc, " I advised against it...I did try to warn him... All his Shop windows got smashed that night,...there sure are some sensitive feckers about...
  15. Seen some amazing Bull crosses recently... Had a walk out with a fellah and a few of his dogs,...one young bitch, a purpose-bred hybrid twixt a line bred Bull /Greyhound and a noted coursing dog,.. was a natural hunter and marker...Her owner was a lamping man, preferring to catch his chosen quarry, after dark., ...therefore he had scant use for these qualities. However, as a keen advocate of the Moucher's dog, I genuinely felt that this ultra-powerful gal could easily have been schooled to do what I require,..no problems...
  16. The miscellaneous Herding breeds have been created over many years, to fulfill a definite need,... If a man has no need of a pure sheepdog or cattle dog, not much point in keeping one. Correspondingly,..if a man cannot gel with these highly intelligent canines, then they had best walk different paths As for the myriad lurcher hybrids that proport to have some minuscule portion of Collie blood flowing through their veins, but who upon closer inspection, exhibit little recognizable herding dog sagacity or traits,...one wonders just what benefit is gained. For me, unless a Collie Lurcher sh
  17. Well done Neil I hate ferreting in the high wind,..so do most ferreting dogs... Last time I was out in a gale, there were rabbits bolting all around us,... the poor old dog couldn't hear anything... This prevented her lightning-fast reflexes helping her snatch bolters in the first few yards,..she really had to earn her corn.. Wind turns a simple task, into a fecking nightmare job...
  18. Personally,...I like all the various herding composites, been around them since I was very young,..and now I am very old As for their usage,..well,..only a fool keeps a dog that cannot do the job for which it is intended,..so, as a one time catcher of rabbits, I always favored the genuine half crosses, a purpose-bred mix twixt Herder and Greyhound...I found that daily usage seemed to mess up the more physical types. I have used fast, streamlined powerhouse coursing dogs on the rabbit job and nothing much escaped their fabulous agility and natural talents. However, looking back through my
  19. There is no point in killing deer if you are not going to cash them in.... If the grassed game is being found, left out in the open,..with no history of an encounter or ruck, twixt landowner and running dog lads,...it makes no sense to leave them. The craic with Roe is to kill quick and keep on until you have another and another,... It pays to think ahead,... it is stupid to leave a shit trail behind yourself. Facts are, killing salable game, after dark,..is achievable,...I did it for years... However, to be successful, you need to keep on the move, work dozens of different estate
  20. I've always found Fold Flat, Fox Cages to be a reet fecking pain.... But, a vanload of Flat Pack carrot cages is a handy bit of kit to own,...they won't ever be cheap though...
  21. Real nice stamp of runner...just my type,.....if only I was younger
  22. Fill in the double hole,..and instead, find a nice single entry burrow going into the warren... Bed in your Mk 6 Fenns, legally,...by placing them well under, the overhang of the burrow,..maybe 'up your odds' by either block trapping the entire Warren, or use several traps. Best of luck,..and good trapping...
  23. Was it a personal challenge Phil? Or did you think it would bring more work in? Has it brought more work in?Do folk ring you over the next man because your a member of the golden circle. Spuriously certified a "master". Just curious. In fairness I've not seen the questions and if I did I more than likely wouldn't have a clue. Atb. Hi there... No, I didn't join those guys to get more work.,..I've more than enough trapping to keep me well busy I just thought, that as a mole and rabbit trapper, for over 30 years, I should support all the various Organisations and Associatio
  24. I reached Level Two Moxy, (admittedly with a little help from my friends) Personally,...I found many of the questions, far too hard,...I just didn't know the answers
  25. This is a splendid cross for a Moucher..,... Possibly more suited, physically,.. to the type of land where a lurcher can be worked with a free reign,..and allowed to hunt, as a true working dog should hunt...
