  1. My thanks to John B for allowing me to see a copy of G.S.Water's manual,."Professional Rabbit Snaring"... I say manual,.(as opposed to book),simply because this unique epistle really is, the definitive work on the subject of catching rabbits with snares. In a world,.so often choc-full of liars, exaggerators and worst of all, users,..this work is a breath of fresh air.. Glenn's words cut through the antiquated bluff and bullshit, like a hot knife through butter,...he speaks as he finds,..and by that I mean, he does not mince his words or suffer fools gladly. I have felt his wrath on several
  2. I only catch a hand full of rabbits,... for me, the craic is the main thing... I am just a part timer,...but the cur bitch I have now,..is a reliable marker/hunter.... So,...next time around ...( if I am still around ) I will seek out a racy three quarter Greyhound x Collie/Kelpie/Beardie stud,..and maybe put him over her.. That will see me out....end of story,......done and dusted....Finito...
  3. Have you guys noticed,..everything to do with Vin is Black,... He dresses in Black,..his ferret boxes are Black,.his ferrets are ,.Black.... I once saw him dissapear before my very eyes,..one second he was walking alongside me ,.then,.he was on the far side of a Drystone wall.... His movements were animal -like ,...lithe, smooth,..,..like a Panther... I suddenly knew ....he was in fact,...a NINJA..
  4. Great to see two good pals....real nice
  5. Hi,..my advice to you would be,..let the bitch enjoy a Summer on her back,..forget catching rabbits,...it is not your occupation,.so enjoy the game for what it is,..and beware of souring the critter... Never get into a fight you cannot win,...and don't allow the bitch to keep on losing.... The Autumn/ Winter season will come,.. soon enough....
  6. This is a difficult problem to cure 100%...
  7. True words,...few canines can match a well schooled whippet, when it comes to quicksilver reflexes,... Been around these keen little jukels since my early days as a rabbiter.... I've, raced, coursed and hunted, with whippets, both KC registered types and Hard Blood, Non-Peds.. They are great fun and most of my contemporaries kept them for the ferreting game... However,..comparisons with other types need not be made....it is foolish.... Nowadays I choose to keep, what I term as a Cur dog,...a whippet based animal, heavily influenced by Herding dog genes... Such a critter lac
  8. Just hit No. 50 today,...but,.by feck,...it is so slooooww...
  9. Don't think a rabbit catching dog needs super intelligence,..but if you are undertaking rabbit control, for the coin,..over varying terrains and situations,..it helps if the dog is 100% adaptable.....in fact,..this trait is possibly more important, than physical prowess.
  10. Mind you,..some whippets do lead charmed lives.... I once saw Madgwick's Black whippet, course a bolter along a banking,...the rabbit headed straight towards a massive wooden telegraph pole,..the dog was following on at top speed. The rabbit jinked at the last moment and the dog litteraly crashed straight into the solid pole... I thought,..."that is fecking,.that" . However,.the wee speedster seemed to bounce off the creosoted timber and went on to catch the rabbit , whereupon they both tumbled headfirst into the water filled ditch....It was impressive,...but for a split second,...
  11. Good to hear that you are enjoying your trapping young man,...it really is an absorbing pastime, and the more you do,..the more proficient you should become...but,.beware of following the wrong path,..cos it will only end in tears and frustration... Did you get awarded the 10 x cage traps, free of charge from the BASC trapping course,.or did you have to pay for them ? Grey Squirrels are a good target to begin your trapping career on,.. They are a curious sort of critter,.. it is this basic nosiness that gets them caught.. Try to make your sets interesting,...but keep them natural,
  12. How very, very, fecking dareth you
  13. I like the whippets,..indeed, I've had some of my most exciting rabbit hunts with a brace of whippets and a keen bushing terrier. Non-stop action,...real good fun....
  14. I think they need to get their advertising sorted,...the 110 BodyGripper is not passed for Mink....
  15. Socialisation is of prime importance,... Ye cannot beat getting pups comfortable with sights and sounds,..being handled etc.... For a roustabout lurcher, a good start in life is essential...
  16. Aye,.the Yorkshire Dales has always provided good sport... Years ago, I used to stay around an area for a week or so,..and enjoy the craic,...nowadays it is always a mad rush, .a few precious hours spent rabbiting with pals,..and then back on to that fecking Motorway.... I get my Bus Pass in a few weeks time,..unbelievable... So,..maybe this season I'll stay away from home for a while,...perhaps give it all,.. one last blast.....
  17. Whatever....all I know, is that a hunting man is responsible for his actions and his own conscience
  18. There are plenty of rabbit nets here for you G.....
  19. In my experience,...the Myxoma Virus is no respecter of colour
  20. Once, whilst making a stategic withdrawel.. I hit an ancient barbed wire fence,..ran full tilt into it in the pitch black,., The rusty barbs tore furrows through my flesh, I wanted to stay down, but my pursuers were gaining fast, so I pulled the barrel of my 410 out of the mud and limped away ... Still have the scars on my thigh,...they have faded somewhat, over the years, but at the time, my leg was in a fair old mess.. It hurt,...it hurt a lot... Nowadays, I am real careful with my lurchers,...obviously as working dogs, you cannot be on their case all the time,..and if you run em',..t
