  1. Proper...good time.. dawgs...
  2. Lovely, nostalgic images lads...and as an old man,.I love to see old pictures,..helps me remember. As for posed images, well yes,..many of the Romany Rye type photos are staged for the camera,....even today,..you would be hard pushed to walk onto a Hatchintan and ask folk, to 'smile for the camera',...it could get, emotional... However, same as most of the Poaching type manuals have rarely been penned, by genuine Poachers,...it just don't matter...Anything that produces an emotion or feeling of happiness,.can't be bad for ya...so keep the antique snaps coming,...I love em...
  3. Its pretty straightforward really,..same as with humans,..some folk ya like,..some you fecking don't.. Another thing that we sometimes forget, is that not all dogs,.like us or respect us,....we kinda take that fact, for granted.....Bit silly really... I try to get into the heart and soul of every dog ,....doing so can help to produce a good, sensible working partner,...in fact, you can become real close mates....A good worker can make or break the day ,.more so if you are toiling for the coin,...however,..it can be a mistake to get 'too close' to an active hunting dog,.... Their liv
  4. There has been foolishness on both sides,...and now,...nobody wants to lose face... Dana can't allow his authority to be usurped, or other fighters will expect to receive concessions,..non-bloody stop,...and Conor cannot seem to find a way, to back peddle and get the fight back on... There needs to be some canny mediation, from a source, that both men respect.
  5. Don't know the guy,..I mostly keep, myself to myself,...financially,..my needs are modest,... I only require, just enough vonga for a nice bottle of Red and a bum burner Jalfrezi....
  6. Grey Squirrels in roof spaces are usually easy to trap,...however, at certain times of the year,..they act a bit strange,..the job can turn into a nightmare and definitely leave, even an experienced trapper, with egg on his face....
  7. Feck me,...if folk ain't trying to score Brownie Points, over who catches most,.biggest, fattest, whitest mole,..then they are telling other men, how best to charge for the task... Truth is,.we all do what we do,...it is,.what it is..etc,.etc... Longevity is the crux of the matter,...and the facts are,...if you can keep the wolf from the door, over several decades, by dint of mole trapping and rabbit catching,..then you must be doing something right,...or you would pretty soon go out of business...
  8. They made handy enough, rabbiting/ferreting/mouching dogs... No big deal,.....but they suited me
  9. Cracking post Toblue... Sounds just about right for Hill Farmers... I once borrowed an ex-track greyhound,...my aim was to try and breed/create a lurcher to suit my requirements at the time...I had sourced an Australian Cattle Dog , seen him work,.was well satisfied and duly paid a stud fee, then put him over my Greyhound....At the time,..such a hybrid was uncommon,...and for me, the project to breed such an animal, had become a wee bit obsessional....So,..it was a mystery to those close to me, as to why I had been so dumb as to allow this heavily pregnant brood bitch,.free reign to gall
  10. The phrase, 'No mole, No Fee' ...is not a new one... I've always worked on that basic premise,...I've also always worked on an agreed set fee, for the week's work... Most of the Mole Trappers and Rabbit catchers, that I mix with,..tend to specialise in controlling these critters ,...they don't do other types of Commercial Pest Control.. Our much valued customers, are paying to have their nuisance pests removed, they don't want to be charged for an Operative or a Visit,..or pay an hourly fee,..or become involved in a complicated, sliding scale of prices... We keep it simple...
  11. Many of the traps that I have been concerned about,..had issues,...mostly regarding basic Humaneness and killing efficiency...However,...that is a story for another place..and another time... The Putange kills pretty quick,...I've heard 'the click' and taken a peek,...they are well hit,...it is all over, nice and quick, finito.... Personaly,...I am sticking with the supplied wire triggers and abiding by the old maxim,.."If it ain't broke",.etc, etc..
  12. Good, informative post Moxy.. Same as yourself,..I am all for trying new methods to improve my catch rate,..fresh concepts,..different ways of looking at the job, etc,..and,..I did mention the idea of 'spreading the wings' of the Putange,..to that man on here,..who can make things... As you know,..there already exists a metal tongue to fit these traps,.they can be purchased online via the French Connection.. I have used them,.plus some others, forwarded to me via Smithie,...and also modified other ones, off old style Scissor Traps... They all work,...but,...in my opinion,...and it is only
  13. Tiercel,..that is definitely a completely harmless, 'early season' Hoverfly... Just cup her firmly in your bare hand,.. and gently release her outdoors....
  14. Feck me,.imagine if you had pulled her legs off !
  15. That is real good mole money fellah,.. I don't suppose there is any chance of a small loan is there
  16. A lucky escape...! As an aside, I am always careful,.. allowing the dogs,.however thirsty,...to drink copiously from puddles, next to wheat fields. At this time of year,...they may well have been sprayed,.. with Pesticide...
  17. The Jay is my favourite British bird...kept several as pets....
  18. Well done fellas,..friendly, sensible banter, constructive chat and some good craic there..
  19. On the whole,...there are not many hidden 'secrets' left in the Pest Control business.... I've been in the game for a long old time,..seen many changes,.and adapted my script, to fall in line with the way of things... There are many lads that I've taken out trapping, (moles, squirrels, rabbits, etc)...and also a fair few that have accompanied me, when I used to maintain regular Service Visits on Commercial Contracts to control, 'rats, mice and crawling insects' , , etc.. Personaly,..I feel proud to have helped out certain lads, who then,..by dint of their own drive, ambition and hard gr
  20. Most traps will benefit from a little tweaking and adjustment,...we owe it to the target species to give them the best death possible....it's only right...
  21. IF,..it is a full on, genuine Cruciate Ligament tear/bust,...then the future's not bright... Lets hope the Vet can sort things out,...all the best, Phil...
  22. This hunting, killing business,.. is an entirely personal thing.... Back in the day,..I wanted to catch, kill and carry,..everything,.no surrender,.no prisoners Now,...unless critters are being removed on a professional basis, (for the coin),..I don't feel the need to keep on, keepin on...In fact,..I derive equal enjoyment, from watching other keen hunters...coursing and catching their chosen quarry....I suppose it would be easy to say that such an attitude necessarily comes with age,..but,.. I don't believe it is quite as,. cut and dry as that.... Like I say,.it is a personal de
  23. I now have that blood in my own Collie based, hedgerow hunters,..and as you so rightly say,..this particular type of whippet does seem to produce eager hunters,.twined with a huge prey drive
