Why Aren't Gundog Lurchers Popular?
Phil Lloyd replied to Allan P's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Seen one or two Lab x Greyhound/Whippet hybrids... Real steady animals,.ideal for having a quiet mouch around and putting a few bits and pieces in the bag/freezer.. . Personally,..I prefer wee curs bred from Herding baselines,..but,..the Lab crosses were useful, when hunting in the woodlands... Each to their own... -
3 Yr Old Killed By Dog In Essex Yesterday.
Phil Lloyd replied to forest of dean redneck's topic in General Talk
A lot of calm and collected , genuine working dogs will put a pup ( or a kid in its place) with a threatening growl..But it is not normal behavior for ANY sane and sensible canine to sink his teeth into a youngster...Dogs should be subordinate to humans,..at all times... Dogs that are wired to attack and kill a subject that is posing, no immediate threat to them,..are quite simply,.mental,... Been around dogs all my life but only had one crazy bitch that would fear/bite an innocent party,...and that dodgy fecker pretty soon went to ground... Facts are,..we are breeding far too many uns -
Set the alarm for this one..... Loved the atmosphere of the fight, but always feared for Magregor,.it realy was a nailbiter,... I wanted him to win ,..but always felt that if Diaz got him on the mat,..it would be end of story... Conor seems to tire at the extra weight,...and when he is facing a tough cookie like Nate,..the ring ain't the place to get puffed out

He is probably a bit too old and feeble now to learn anything new

Yep,..it pays to be careful with regard to disease and such things....

As a boy,..I saw genuine Polecats taken in rabbit Gins.... always regreted it... They are a magnificent preditor,.great to watch in the wild, and real determined when after their prey... However,..later in life,..working as a rabbit catcher,..I was gifted several first cross specimans....the experience has always been, emotional..They were truly beautiful animals, no denying that,..,..but after extensive testing in the field,..offered no improvement (workwise) over a good working line of ferrets. My present ferreting partner, kindly keeps my old line of black poleys ,...we have recent

Mole Trapping, Is This One Or Two Jobs?
Phil Lloyd replied to jackg's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
The customer must pay you on completion of the job....end of story... You kill his Moles/Foxes/Rabbits,.he gives you money for doing so,.it ain't fecking Rocket Science.. Learn the basic rule,..."Keep it simple"..... -

Well done Trigger and Pup.. Personally,...I would now,..let sleeping dogs lie,...just for a while.... You have seen what you wanted to see and now, know the score,... I think we all like to have that bit of confidence in a new lurcher confirmed,. Its nice to put that knowledge in your back pocket and often breath a sigh of relief.. I am one of the worst for starting dogs/ferrets young,...it is as though I need to know if our lives together , actually have a future ! Life is too short for me to maintain a kennel of critters, that do not think the same way as myself,.so,.as stat

I Just Couldnt Help Myself, I Just Had To Try It.
Phil Lloyd replied to trigger2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Fair play,...I only keep a cur.. She has scant speed ,.so as a puppy,.I would never have let her run the beam,.but I've had other types that were quick silver fast, nimble and agile as Stoats,..and if let loose on a black windy night, on good rough ground,.they killed and killed,...no problems... -

Phil Lloyd replied to trigger2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think some lads are getting confused with the early education and schooling that a roustabout rabbiting lurcher so often benefits from,..as opposed to the old style 'coursing/racing ' way of thinking,... Massive difference in letting a mongelised lurcher have a peek at his future life, to that of running a hard and difficult quarry...with a promising young speed merchant...One ruins, the other educates. . -
Try not to get too hung up on this fetching to hand business.. I know its frustrating,...but your situation is a stars flight from the scenario where a jukel catches his quarry,..then,.fecks off and heads for the hills with it.... Now,.. that really would be,..emotional...

Phil Lloyd replied to trigger2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
With certain types,..it is a risk,..no doubts about that, but, in my opinion, it is frequently more of a mental issue than a physical one. Sometimes you win and unfortunately,. sometimes ya will lose... If you know your stock,...you know.... -

Phil Lloyd replied to trigger2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
There has always been a reluctance to risk spoiling/souring a race dog or hare coursing prospect, by overmatching it at an early age,..but, jukels destined to be roustabout catch dogs ,...LURCHERS,....need to learn a whole lot of devious twists and turns,..and like their human partners,..be savvy to every trick and treat, that is available to them... For a hunter,...the catch is all important,...it ain't about the winning,..its the filling of the van that counts...
