Shaaark said,.."I think this is the case with many lads on here, they believe that they need 'a machine' etc etc, or 'the best' type/cross, when in reality a whippet would more than cover alot of their hunting needs". There is a fair amount of truth in that statement..

Some do,..some don't...Some will and some won't...

They are lurchers....

Whippets are often underestimated as hunting dogs,... In fact,..they can often enhance the breeding programe of a purist rabbiteer Some specimans have an inate desire to catch their quarry,..their prey drive is litteraly, through the roof... As a daytime coneycatcher,...they take some beating...

It has been proved, a thousand times or more,...you can have the craic, you can have a genuine wind up,...ya can even bad mouth folk,.. until the cows come home,...but ye cannot seriously talk dogs,.on the Internet..

Mole Trapping Prices

I've never subscribed to that method,...it can get emotional,..for both Client and Trapper... -
Some individual dogs,...need to have a straightener,...or they will cause major problems,..and even get themselves killed... Back in the day...I used to be a hard fecker with a dog,...but, over the years I have become more enlightened and now realise where I went wrong...Today,..I only keep/breed dogs that are of the temperament, to take schooling and also handle the occasional row.... Personaly,..I hate bad feeling twixt me and the dogs,..I like us all to be at the game for the same reason...It is possibly a wee bit anthropomorphic, to consider a canine as being a good old pal, a trusted fr

Personaly,...from what I have seen,....the best of the Kelpie F1 Hybrids, are definitely on a par, with the best of the Border Collie F1 Hybrids...

Why Does It Matter... When It Comes To Breeding?
Phil Lloyd replied to Hamish.J.Cronan's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Hmm,...As I once told the verminous creature,.."One man's wastage,.is another man's ideal type" -
Real interested Fellah,..in fact,..for most of my life, I have always been, extremely close to quitting the lurchers and going with the Herding dogs. They have always been a draw for me.... My Father and Grandfather both used sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs,...our Collies were a reet mixed bunch ! I've handled dogs from all around the UK and noticed that there is a marked difference, in what folk term a Border Collie,...In fact, they come in all shapes, sizes,..and obviously colours..They also differ greatly, in temperament, mental hardness and willingness to work varying types of stock....All

Hi Chicken Man,..I grew up around these types of herding dogs, plus a whole lot of other,.. miscellaneous curs,... Nowadays, I only do a bit of rabbit catching and mole trapping,..so would have no need of such animals... But,..I cannot forget them...or my early life with them....

Thats intresting certainly something i did not know. There ya go... Still working today...
-
Nice images Darbo.... Them old Blue Shaggs and Southern Downland types,.still exist...even today.

With all the various herding composites,...especially the first crosses,....I have found that it is useful, to try and secure the services of genuine working lines....Some herding types look good, working on a high Fell or remote homestead,..but occasionally, due to such quiet , remote locations, they rarely see much of the world,.and their temperaments can be suspect..This wild and primitive behaviour (so often the thing that attracts a hunting man),.can present problems. It pays to choose slowly,.take some time out, to see if a pastoral cur really is,..what you want.

Ain't actualy watched the clip,...but, I've a fair idea how the script goes... Facts are,...some guys are just not right,..they were born bad,..and will die bad..... Hunting can also be a cruel old game, there is no denying it,...so, as normal folk, we have to try to be as slick at it, as we can.. Like others, I think back over the years, and sometimes feel regret,...but,.within seconds,.this sadness and meloncoly quickly disipates and I feel that everything that has occured, was meant to be... As I get older, I try to find other things to take the place of hunting/mouching,...b

Walked out with a few Kelpie hybrids,...really liked them...

Me too,...no difference ....

I doubt there would be a sale for mole carcases,...although I did once have a real good buyer ,.ominously known as 'the Bone Man'.... Sadly, he came and he went,.as do most easy earners,.. Nowadays I bundle up a 100,.. and give them to a Hawking enthusiast, who also keeps a trio of Eagle Owls... Them silly big things,.. love em...

Collie Grey Bull Grey Or Bull Grey Sal Grey
Phil Lloyd replied to D Lloyd's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think it's because it's nice when like minded folk have got an interest in what you are doing. They ask questions and offer ideas etc. But you often get more negative responses than positive on here, regardless of what you are doing or how you are doing it. This is the nature of the Beast,..t'Internet... It is great to be around like-minded souls,..just as long as they truly are, like-minded and not simply critics....Breeding from seemingly, untested young canines , has always been a contentious subject and in an ideal world, we would all choose to up our odds and try to go for -
Bit late for me to start again ... But,...as I only hunt,..the Two R's.....my ideal hybrid would be a Three Quarter Greyhound/ Quarter Border Collie..no need for anything else ,...a nice strong'un would do me nicely...

@ Gaz and Tb25... Actually,...I used a canvas bag, to carry my bitch ferret in for several years,...never had any problems. Obviously,..backintheday... (we were mouching/poaching 100%.....) so a ferret box slung over the shoulder and a rangy, rough coated cur following on closely behind,.....would have been a wee bit,.obvious... Thankfully, times have changed,..and nowadays several teams of ferrets are often required,..so you need good serviceable boxes,..the comfort of your workers,.is paramount

Lamping Dogs Lamping Pics Old Or New
Phil Lloyd replied to skully's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Great to see those old images of night hunting... I've been out with several guys ,.keen to capture the essence, of this exciting pursuit,...even tried to man the camera myself ,..which was mostly a disaster,... Still got scores of ancient Black and White images to go through,..finding it difficult, trying to see, what is what, on the negatives... Get there someday... -
