Superb advice... -
Nice words Dr Mole.... I think we ALL need a helping hand at some time in our lives..
-
Eye colour in canines has always been an interest of mine... Same with the oftimes curious mixture of coat patterns, seen in Merle coloured dogs. .The variation is amazing,...some are incredably beautiful whilst others can give the jukel a real cock-eyed appearance, almost comical..

Some real nostalgic images lads...

Hi Chunk,...been a lot of chat regarding these specialised herding dogs... Maybe enter Cattle Dogs, into the Search Box and take a look at all the member's comments... All the best, Phil.

Super post Wish I was there....

Taking on a partner/employee, can sometimes be risky,...and I just don't mean for "Health and Safety" issues.. I've seen several self employed Pesters end up 'in competition ' with a man they have educated,...trust me, it hurts... Nowadays, I only employ two helpers,...one is my dear Wife,.the other is a Collie cur,...both work dirt cheap...

One of my better lurchers was Saluki blooded.... I have always been of the same mind where certain hybrids are concerned,...play to their strengths,.ignore their weaknesses... Same as with Greyhound pups, destined for the working life, as opposed to just Coursing and Racing,..or the Saluki youngster,..brought out with the ferrets and nets as a babe.... I carry on regardless,..and never forget my own unwritten rule,"Don't ever tell them,..that they ain't a Lurcher"

Well,.. I made it,...who would ever have thought it.....

Was out with the Dam to your bitch Jigsaw,..liked her a lot..

Its difficult , (more so with Heelers than Kelpies)..but possibly the best way to obtain stock from these purpose bred Herders, would be to seek out some genuine working types,..and go from there
-
That is a beautiful and unusually marked Terrier bitch,....nice stamp about her as well..
-
Yeah,..the guy has an annoying way about him,...you must have an amazing concentration span Gaz,..you beat me by 40 seconds Rewarding a young pup with a treat is,..a short cut.. It is no substitute for harnessing prey drive and what is to come later,.but it does get the ball rolling... I'm not going to go into how I prefer to school a work type lurcher,...other than to say,...the biggest problem for newbies to the game ,..is in choosing the wrong tool for the job...or worst still,.moving the goal posts... Some lads start off just wanting a wee mouching/ferreting cur,.then suddenly a

Favored Line Of Border Collies For Lurcher Crosses?
Phil Lloyd replied to Dan McDonough's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Cattle that are unused to being worked by a dog, can be extremely dangerous,.they can stomp on a canine, in moments.. Dogs need to be aware of such things,.. Sometimes, when out ferreting the rabbits, steers and bullocks will cause a whole lot of carnage, especially if they take a fancy to tearing up your Long Nets,... If they will not keep clear,.then you sometimes need to send in the dog,...it really is the only way... -

Favored Line Of Border Collies For Lurcher Crosses?
Phil Lloyd replied to Dan McDonough's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
When hybridising a herding breed with a running dog,....Temperament, rather than pure physique, would be my main criteria....- 53 replies

The 'Cushion Catch ' footholds are a darn good trap,...pity we cannot use them for Fox, here in the UK...

Feel for the guy,...it's no joke walking down the garden and seeing that your ferret hutches have been raped,... Everyone is different, I know that, but personally, it finished me .... As for ratting ferrets,...Rats, (if given the opportunity),.will usually elect to flee,..no wild creature goes looking for a fight,...so, they will bolt,.. if they can,..but if forced to stay put,..they will sell their lives dearly and in a tight tube, they will inflict terrible injuries, before they succumb to a keen ferret's bite... I've seen plenty of ferrets lose eyes and get their noses unhinged,

Squirrels Above Suspended Ceiling
Phil Lloyd replied to jackg's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
No,..they are not... -
Nice bold pup Blackdog,.. Personally,..I like to see a tyke that has no fear of livestock,...they are invariably easier to school than flighty, nervy,.chasers,....in short, it is often a case of 'familiarity breeds contempt'....and a sensible Jukel soon twigs on that livestock, sheep. cattle, pigs and chucks,.ain't on the menu....

Squirrels Above Suspended Ceiling
Phil Lloyd replied to jackg's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I think it only fair to inform the customer, that if you use Rodenticide to poison a Grey Squirrel,..if it succumbs to your ploy,.there might well be a long period of sweet smelling decay.... For Grey Squirrels, in dwelling places,.trapping and exclusion is generally the best option...
