Bearded Collie Greyhound Or Border Collie Greyhound
Phil Lloyd replied to rabbitman1234567's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
That is a difficult question to answer, with any real certainty... I've kept most of the well-known Herding composites,...Border Collie, Beardie Collie hybrids, Kelpie crosses and of course, Australian Cattle Dog lurchers... Enjoyed hunting with them all,...but, each type has its own peculiarities and individual traits,..nothing is definitive, they are all different... -
Don't be feared of posting images fellah,... Folk always like to reminisce,..and on the whole, times were better back then... We had no silly legislation to dictate to us, as to what may, or may not be pursued with our running dogs.... Back in the 1980s, the secretive and often private world of the lurcher was starting to attract the attention of canny wordsmiths. The traditional Moucher's and Freelancers dogs were also being encouraged to chase the lure and walk sedately, around a Show Ring... At first, many hardcore hunters hated what was fast becoming the norm,..but,..nothing cou

Well, Tratante you may have been away from the lurcher scene for many years,..but as you can see, nothing much has changed....

Those sort of people are like the low-life looters, who chor from empty houses,.. after a major disaster...

Yes, they were good times Tratante,...but things,...(in reality) were not quite as they seemed....

This has always been a fault with the DR5,...and as stated, it is a right fiddle getting that hose fitted back on... I much prefer my old DustMaster,..she has served me well for decades,...alas, I've almost worn the old gal out,...she needs a re-fit...

Something For The Weekend, Sir?
Phil Lloyd replied to EDDIE B's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Well done Eddie,....once again, what a great thread... Looking through the Young and Sons catalog ... I can see my Hemp Longnet... I wanted a nice green net, so when we were courting,.. back in 1972, my dear wife purchased one for me... I still use that net today,...pretty good value for 30 shillings, eh... -
Finished a good day on the wasps,..(9 nests) and felt a nice glass of Shiraz would be appropriate. I sat in the garden, taking in the warm sunshine, when I noticed my wife Rosy,..gesturing to me,..but, it was too late,... A wasp dived into the red grapes and landed on my tongue....it was 'pay back time'...and by feck, it hurt. Fair play to the stripey fecker,...he did what he had to do, but paid the price, as do all things that go out of their way,.. to hurt me...

That is a lovely link,..many thanks for posting it... I suppose I am fortunate to have lived through such times,...indeed, I spent many hours with the Young and Son team... What tales could be told,..but best left for another place... In an age where a lot of folks seem obsessed, with the best dog, the most game caught, the biggest bollocks, etc,...it's great to talk traps and trapping... -
How is everyone watching the Fight? Do members know, if any free streaming sites are working, or will Showtime have put the legal frighteners on them? What are folk who do not have TV facilities doing?

Bedroom Full Of Fcuking Euro Hornets !!!
Phil Lloyd replied to sussex's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Phil , I picked up about 90 inside and there was about the same outside under the window , is that average sort of size ? And to be fair I wasn't hanging about to see if they were friendly , Some colonies of Hornets have a fair old population, but on the whole, the average nest is seldom massive... If there is no more traffic in and out of the nest entrance, then the job is complete, finished, kaput... Well done, but remember us poor old Pesters,... please don't make a habit of it... -
A lovely sight,..but, it is not all it seems Arry,... I've done a fair few Burial Mounds, ancient sites, old traditional Warrens,.etc and even when they are packed to the gunnels, the job often slows down after a frenzied twenty odd...Then,..its digging time, and as you have probably noticed,..them rabbit Shangralas are mighty deep...

Bedroom Full Of Fcuking Euro Hornets !!!
Phil Lloyd replied to sussex's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
So far, this quiet season, amongst numerous Wasp nests, both Common and German (European ) we have also treated over 30 Hornets nests.... As a type, Hornets usually act pretty dumbly, compared to the far larger colonies of Wasps,...sometimes, I feel bad about destroying them... Unfortunately, it is, what it is, and in the Pest Control game,.. you have to do it, or someone else will... However,.., if left well alone, Hornets do not cause the same problems as Wasps,..well, unless they come through the ceiling, then, I will admit, it is emotional, -
Good to see the wee dog enjoying his hunting, over such a wild old place. I could almost feel that cold wind and helpful breeze,... I can remember so many, similar dark nights. It is not easy getting good footage, after dark,..obviously better nowadays, than back in the 70s and 80s,..but it's never straightforward. I rarely bother with the dazzler these days,..strangely enough, it just doesn't rock my boat anymore, don't really know why... Nice to watch others doing it though,..kinda brings back memories... All the best,.Phil.

Last season my rabbiting partner was having major problems with wasps around our ferret courts. He told me that he could barely get into the enclosures for swarms of wasps At first, I called him for being such a girly,.but when I visited the cages, he had not been exaggerating and I don't blame him for being a tad nervy... I had a scout around and managed to find 3 x nests in the vicinity..these were dealt with ASAP,..and I returned next day and located another one. We stopped leaving food in during the daytime and fed the ferrets after dark. Anything not reduced to the carcass in

Love bushing/raking about, mouching around etc... Hedgerow dawgs and whippets, go together like apple pie and cream,... Easy to write about, the endless days spent hunting rabbits, deer, and foxes out of the rough bankings and deep ditches,..the problem has always been, obtaining decent action shots. Most of the real work, the initial hunt, and the exciting, first contact is nearly always hidden away from the camera lens,... I've tried it and failed abysmally,..but if someone could capture the sheer thrill and fast pace of this most enthralling pursuit,..it would be great.

Timid/scared Saluki Cross Pup
Phil Lloyd replied to Mat_1994's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Poor wee thing... Firstly,..and most importantly,..forget all about Saluki this or that,..for, all things being equal,..his cross-bred lineage frequently means nowt.... He is, simply a frightened and confused young animal....your job,..if you decide to take it,..is to reassure him that if you are around, nothing can harm him. You have to be the man,..walk tall,..stand in front of anything or anyone that might spook him....protect him,...give him time.... All dogs are different,...I've owned herding breeds that have been raised on remote farms and who are virtually wild animals -
Well done to you all

Jobs You Can Never Get Away From
Phil Lloyd replied to LuckOrJudgement's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Fair play....but honestly,...it is strictly a case of profit... I still love taking on, a large acreage of silage,.but the facts are,..the large Mansion houses and country gardens are far better payers,... for far less labor... So,..what would any sane man do ??? It has taken me several decades to arrive at this most fortuitous situation,..it wasn't easy, but now I have this market, I'll not return to the slog, of rural trapping -
Using a tunnel on a Fen Trap in a roof space,...has NOTHING to do with folk catching their fingers.... The concept of the Fenn is for the trap to literally jump upwards and catch the target species in its embrace. This springing action can sometimes fling the target of the treadle or worst still catch him on the belly. You will frequently see rabbits escape and leave a bit of fur twixt the striking bars. For this reason, with Fenns, it is imperative that the burrow is of the right size to accommodate the 'jump' and any tunnel, of sufficient dimensions, so as to literally force the critter

Jobs You Can Never Get Away From
Phil Lloyd replied to LuckOrJudgement's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Garden jobs are my bread and butter,...I used to trap vast estates for moles,...but now, I enjoy a far less stressful existence,..gardens are good... -
Unless your Lurchers are being kept solely for selected jobs/targets, I do believe that working dogs are capable of many disciplines. I only keep a wee 'un, so she is physically limited, but she enjoys the rabbiting,mouching/ferreting job, plus picks up birds on land and water.
