Bushing Dogs Or Other Breeds For Beating
Phil Lloyd replied to BUSHY1's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
Used most of the lurchers for this task,...however, it is a short lived career,...shit (or rather Deer) usually hits the fan... When this occurs, the dogs get relegated to picking up,..their days of complete freedom are then over... -
I am sure that the Editor of EDRD would be pleased to receive, articles/images, contributions, etc... It must be a colossal task producing a regular Fieldsports Publication,.. without the financial assistance of adverts and sponsors. Send in what you can, lads...

When using any Fenn,...in any location,...I would advise placing it in a Tunnel of some kind...

My Greyhound bitch, Tina,..was a fabulous catcher of game,...I had her with me as a puppy from 6 weeks of age... Back in the 1970s, Roe deer were making an appearance in my area. She enjoyed catching them, she was so fast and was on their hocks in moments,..they didn't seem to stand a chance. Great times...

I was asked this question back in the 1980s in my Shooting News column... Nothing much has changed... The Greyhound (like the Collie) comes in various shapes, sizes, temperaments, etc, etc.. Obviously, to take a canine athlete, straight off the track and to then, launch the bemused critter into the heady life of a working lurcher, is both pointless and often cruel.... The racing dog has no education other than the track, and although he may catch quarry, it is still a risky process. Far better, if you want to find out,..is to rear a greyhound from a pup, allow it to learn

the fastest whippet in the country ????
Phil Lloyd replied to cocker's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Looking well G... -
Never had the luxury, or opportunity,..to stand back and enjoy, the war of attrition and exciting match, twixt a skillful running dog and the hare... I've always wanted a chosen prey species,.. 'done and dusted',.. as soon as possible.. Therefore,.I rate a fast and capable killer, that is all over its hare, and who can bully her into making a fatal mistake. Such a serious type of lurcher will always draw admiring glances, but nowadays, it would be wasted on me...

Whippets are so lightning quick and mentally alert,.they will catch pheasant for fun. Facts are, they are a real fecking liability where game birds and suchlike are lying up in the brash.... I've had some tykes that needed being put on a leader,...before they got me hung out to dry...
-
It's a shame... Just read all the sad bit of blurb, describing the poor tyke, on Preloved. Not quite sure if his owners have placed such a high price on the tyke's head, in an attempt to ward off, the dog dealing fraternity,.or,..they are quite simply, profit driven? Facts are,..if ever a lurcher composite is destined to go wrong and produce a problem,..it will frequently be when the Brindle Bandit from Trap Two, gets into bed with ole Shep the Sheepdog. I have bred a few Collie lurchers,..some good enough to be a Moucher's jukel, but others, totally unsuitable as household pets.

Welcome to the oldies Club,...all the best,..

I get the drift of folk, who are either, 'for or against', the running of quarry during what might be termed, the off season,..and can understand both camps.. Obviously,.I have my own opinion regarding such matters,..but it is only that, .an opinion. My mind harks back to a conversation I had with the Author, the late Ted Walsh... We were discussing my own nighttime activities,.. and there was a difference of opinion.... Being sensible fellows, we both came to the conclusion that, "What a man does with his lurchers,.. is strictly a matter for his own conscience"... I have

Depression is a terrible thing...I've suffered from this debilitating malady, all my life... Obviously,..folk who do not 'get it',..don't get it,...and why should they? Perfectly understandable,..I've no problem with their attitude,...and I wish them well. Meanwhile,..those who do have this illness simply keep on, keeping on,... Some days/months are better than others,..and you can only live for the good times,..feck the bad'uns.

She is an honest worker,...real handy sort.... You have worked wonders with the bitch,...well done for sticking with her...

You wouldn't though if it was a family member would You? no but i'd expect everyone else too.whats more i don't really believe all this dark place thing,we all live in the same world with the same problems.if you have more complex issues there usually self inflicted through drink ,drugs that sort of thing.some people just have weak minds. Are you saying you don't believe in clinical depression and the effects it can have on people? clinical depression,P,T,S,D,bi-polar,autism all bullshit if you ask me. what can be so bad that you can't function normally.? i was going to share what hap

To be honest,..£1.50 a rabbit, in the fur,..not having to gut them,...is a fair enough price... I'm sure we would all like more cash for them, considering what the Butcher gets for a carcass,..but, everyone needs to have their share,..that is the way of things. I don't catch much these days,..but, back in the day,...to be able to sell, lamped, snared, netted, head shot and trapped shushis , in quantity..would have been nice

We are trying to keep out of the woods, bracken, etc.... As you know, it's worse where there are a lot of deer.
-
Only keep a few whippet/collie things,...nowt special or anything,..just ditch-busters and net guards... I've only got a handful of local contracts for the rabbit jobs,...I'm mostly a Mole Trapper these days...

Great craic C.Green....keep it up... it is beneficial (and relatively easy) to encourage dogs to enjoy the water during the hot Summer months,... I try to get my wee Cur into the sea most evenings,...the ground is baked hard and invariably produced injuries, whereas the swimming provides that much-needed exercise and stimulation a Collie cross needs, without risking busted toes, etc....For those who own non-swimmers, the secret to getting a reluctant paddler into the deep is to put a leader on him and gently wade out yourself. He has no choice but to follow you...and if you are gentle wi
