Starting Out Full Time Moling Advice
Phil Lloyd replied to tilimangro's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Best advice I can give you is,...'Don't ever work cheap'..... Start as you mean to go on,.....the trapping game has been a good Mistress to me... Always be professional,....be 100% honest with the customer, Practice to become proficient and familiar, with all the various styles of trap at your disposal... Stay away, from jobs that are not profitable,...pick and choose,...and never be afraid to walk away from a non-earner. It IS hard at first,...I do know this,...but if ya can hang on in there, until you become established,..it is a great life. -
Had quite a few Collie based lurchers,...in their most basic form,...they are invariably physically limited,...but,..if you have the same mindset as this most primitive of all the hunting dogs,...I find they do offer something that the other hybrids don't,....but,.by the same token,...they can be difficult to handle.. ...It is a foolish mistake to believe that, due to their reputed intelligence and tractability,...that collie crosses are easy to handle,...because in reality (if you want to use them for a bit more than a mere running dog)...they sure ain't..

What A Waste Of Hares !!!
Phil Lloyd replied to dark-destroyer-85's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Right or wrong,...to shoot hares in such numbers,...is neither here nor there....it is entirely a personal decision,..no more, no less.... Personaly,..if I was skint (which I have been many times)....and I could make money killing them...then I would....Same with deer and other game.... However,...I would not enjoy being at the death of a hundred Hares,..with or without a jukel,..just for the sport of it.... I would soon get bored.... Been spotting for rabbits on many a night,...finding the squatters with a dazzler for riflemen,....seen them rolled over in their hundreds,..but I' -
Yes, I agree,..and it is downright cruelty to take a full grown canine athlete, such as an ex racer,...a jukel that has been trained, conditioned, cosseted and kept in the manner of a Spartan warrior,.denied the opportunity to feel the wind in its face and experience the tender embrace of the barbed wire and woodland debris,....to then,...let the poor creature loose amidst the wastelands of factory units or forestry plantation,..to tear its guts out in the UK countryside. This foolishness is pure wickedness,...and is the action of a dumb Motherfecker.... BUT,.when a nice well balanced Gazeh

Its a bad old day when a hunting man , feck's,... his fellow hunting men.... Nothing more to say really,... Let's move on,..many of us have backed a loser in our time,...in fact, I am a Black Belt in falling for a sob story,... Keep our trusted friend's close, and feck anyone else...

I reared a nice wee bitch and used her for the roe and hares,...she fecked em up,..and I do mean, proper fecked.. Never gave the game away and told her, that she wasn't a lurcher,..and she never knew any different... Mind you, back in the day,. it was ALL after dark freelancing,.no training for the mouching/ferreting/netting business,...it just wasn't sensible to walk about during the daylight hours,...it always ended up , emotional... But, for the quick slip and trip,...I had no complaints,... I used her for several years,...broke her in the end,..but there ya go,..that's the hu

Conor is a breath of fresh air in the modern fight game,..he says it like it is,... He is in it,. for the gold doubloons,...end of story... Looking forward to the fight...

Fair play to you fellah,...they are genuinely top notch pies,..I was privileged to have a wee taster,....but,..in my opinion,.to become the best of the best,..for me,.they need to be 3 x BIGGER

I would only endorse what others have said.. Vin obviously has a natural talent for the filming game,...and considering the excellant results he has achieved with an IPhone...well,..the future seems bright. Inshallah,. we shall see some more interesting footage of the beautiful Dales, hopefully twinned with the vision and sheer excitement of honest and versatile canines,..pursuing and catching that born survivor,.. the rabbit...

If you hunt illegally on a regular basis,..(which I used to do),...you increase the odds of capture and subsequent prosecution....It's simply down to the law of averages,..part and parcel of the game.... Them days are long gone.. I no longer need to freelance,..but in truth,..I was always 'guilty as charged'..

Wasted a lifetime, on hunting with dogs and ferrets,..freelancing and walking where the fancy took me,...and accordingly,..the Magistrates Court made sure that I paid the price... I have no proper trade, no skills,..fecking useless at everything,.. and virtually unemployable Thank the Lord for the Yellow Pages,....that wee advert, offering my services as a controller of rural pests, saved the day,.my marriage and definitely, my liberty... So,.taking everything for what it is,.my life with lurchers has cost me dear, but ultimately saved the day

Well done big fellah,..a lovely post,.filled with the joy of just being, out there... A good honest score,. combined with the other Saturday's, hard won ..you guys are certainly going for it. All the best to you and the wee Yin..

We all require different dogs, for different tasks,....an obvious statement (and possibly not the answer the original poster was after),.but is,..in my mind,...a truism.... Personaly,...I only need a dog to seek, find (and hopefully connect) with a nuicence pest,..;ie,..the rabbit.. Anything else would be a criminal waste of dog flesh....I hunt mostly for the coin,...I enjoy the craic and love to go on a jolly,.but mostly, it is for wages...so,..it pays to keep the right tool for the job.... As for a test...well, every day is a test,...every job is another one,.. done and dusted

Marking an occupied warren,.. is a handy trait in a rabbiting/ferreting cur.... Keep at it....practice, practice,...practice...

Just returned from a wee jaunt,..up North... To say that the weather was bad,..would be an understatement.... I've been hunting the rabbits for many years,..but I've never ferreted in such a cold , relentless high wind...a face stinging, force of nature,..accompanied by constant icy rain.... For a pair of elderly soft Southerners,...it was emotional... However,..it was great to be in the company of such determined and committed hunting men. Tomo and Vin realy do know their land, and are both (in my opinion)...at the top of their game.. Their dogs worked well and considering the how

Require A Small Working Strain Of Ferret.
Phil Lloyd replied to Poacherspocket's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Obviously,..only a fool tells another hunting man, what he should, or should not do...so I won't... But,...(in my opinion)...it is not advisable to make a habit of breeding two Merles together...
