  1. In my opinion,..especially around the hedgerows and in the brash,..there is no better combo, than a fast, educated whippet and his pal, the ferret... I've had some great sport with whippets, hard bloods,..and pedigree working lines,....phenomenal, fully committed wee jukels,..with quicksilver reflexes
  2. Brought in this pretty cur,.hopefully as a future brood bitch,..alas, it did not quite work out..
  3. That is a good attitude NewKid... I was raised ,.never to tell anyone, anything,..about anything,... So,..any land that was productive, was always closely guarded,...we came, we conquered,..shut the door behind us, and left quietly...As you can guess,..we was freelancing,..and facts are, I had several decades of mouching, wherever salable game was. I just didn't give a feck... However,.my attitude changed drastically, when I began to secure rights and permission to hunt,...then,..(for a short while at least), I became the world's worst and made it abundantly clear, to anyone w
  4. Interesting comments from various posters,... I think we all get some hassle with young lurchers,..it's just the way of things,..however,..a massive reason why some enthusiasts encounter constant behavioural problems, is realy quite simple...(although,.being a wee bit on the slow side myself,.it has taken me a while, to accept the facts...) Basically,..whilst we all like to own a well bred jukel,..there is a case for being a tad more realistic... Some dogs have an incredible ancestory of tried and tested, purpose bred blood, flowing through their veins,..in short, they have been bred t
  5. That is not good Frankel,...but unfortunately,..it ain't uncommon...
  6. Beautiful crisp, clear markings,...real interesting example ...
  7. Well,..many years ago,..both me and Father invested good money, for the rabbiting rights over certain areas.. We watched the places first,..made sure it was viable,...then put in our bids,...we were rarely alone,...quite a few other teams had their eyes on an earner...Dead rabbits fetched a pound a piece,..live'un's....a whole lot more. . In most cases,.we got our money back in the first few weeks of snaring and trapping,..and then,..it was all profit.. Ain't life funny though,...first, I paid them,...then in the latter years,.they paid me,...
  8. Exciting write up, Vin,.after reading it, I went down the kennels with my cur dogs and cried for an hour.. With my dogs, them reed beds, was my only real chance of a victory.
  9. Sounds to be good craic,... It must be so rewarding to have such light-hearted days out,....
  10. Hi,..yes, I sometimes breed some cur dogs for myself, and a few other lads... My workload has changed somewhat,..I no longer get onto the massive Downland chalk warrens, the spacious Plains and Nature Reserves,..but, I still cull a few shushis from off the local pheasant and partridge shoots. I stay out of the woods as best I can, and concentrate on the miles of hedgerows that border the game shoots. For this job, I find a purpose bred hybrid, twixt the Sheepdog and Greyhound, with a smidgen of whippet (to bring the size down), fits the bill nicely....These determined, quicksilver, bush bu
  11. Merles,..a contentious subject..and like Marmite,..you either love em,..or,.... ya don't Having been involved with herders and sheepdog/Cattle dog, hybrid lurcher types,..since my childhood,..Merle coloured canines, have always been part and parcel of Collie x Running dog litters... I've had Black and white collie lurchers and plenty of Red Fawns , Brindles, etc,.. The actual colour doesn't really mean a lot,..they are either useful,.or not useful,..simple as that. Personaly,..I quite like the Merle colouration,..I find this unique blend of Greys, Silvers,Blues and Chocolate pelt hu
  12. Caught a fair few Roe in the woods,...if they rise close, jumping up out of brash , cover or bracken, a fast type can quickly take them down,...but, it is a practice, fraught with danger,.I've had dogs get real busted up in the woods,.. In my experience,..it's a game of chance,.best avoided,..it just ain't worth the risk...
  13. Er, yeah,.kinda stating the fecking obvious ... In the Pest Control Industry,..(and for many years, I was a successful, Rats, Mice and Crawling Insects wallah,.)....it is imperative that the operative is competent (and to stay in line with current legislation),..is fully trained and certificated,.. and aware of all his actions. This is obvious,..we all know this.... However,..as for the mole trapping business,..(and for some of us it is a full-time business),...we need this monthly turnover of newbies entering the game,..like a hole in the proverbial head..!. These Guilds, S
  14. You fkn prick..you know f**k all about MY dog ..tyical Hunting Life bellend..go f**k yourself That's the trouble with you Andy,..you always hold back,...too shy to say what ya think...
  15. Good ole Bruce,..loved the rabbits and the Roe ....first of the ACD x Greyhound hybrids....
  16. That takes something to walk away Gaz,..very few folk ,.especially with chavies in tow, can ever resist, the unbelievably tempting,..puppy dog syndrome
  17. Hi Earth Thrower,..I am pleased that you agree with some of my concerns,....as for you wanting to contact the various Assosiations, Societies, etc to put forward such remarks,...well,.I've been there, done that.. had it out with them,..but,.we do not agree A prominant figure in one of these Societies, Guilds, etc, ..once said to me, "Phil,..we must all help to train the new mole trappers",.. He continued by saying,."Do you want the ancient Art of Molecatching to die out "? My reply was short,....."Yes,...as far as I am concerned,... let it fecking die out,...you can resarect it ag
  18. Important point there Fireman,..an in depth knowledge,..valid and accurate comments, born of genuine experience,...how fecking rare.. I grew up on a remote smallholding amidst the Welsh Marches,..I had very little schooling or formal education,. but, after a family break up,.I followed my Father to the Kentish Hop Fields. We worked the sheep, bred our cur dogs,...controlled the shushis, and trapped vermin together.. Spent my formative years with genuine dark faced Roms,.old style Gypsy folk,...the Boswells and the Lees.....I learnt a whole lot about,.a whole lot of things,..how
  19. Well said, Dai Dogs..... Men will buy,.. what they want to buy,..and will do,.. what they want to do.... "Live,.. and Let Live".....says I...
  20. Never had a pup from Hancock myself, but did talk to him a couple of times in the mid 90's, and he never tried to persuade me in any way to buy from him, infact he did'nt think one of his would suit me when i told him that i done more coursing than any other type of lurcherwork, would'nt have minded one like K. Walkers Cleo Kev and me walked out together,..hunted on the Dales,... I liked his Greyhound x Collie bitch,...I also liked him... He came down to stay at my place in Hampshire....it was good craic..
  21. I am relieved, that we are well established locally,...and this feeding frenzy and mass producing of contemporary mole trappers will (hopefully) not effect my chosen path...
  22. Well, I won't bad mouth the man,.because,.disregarding what eventualy, went down,...he was always good to me... Anyway,..moving quickly on..... I have owned two dogs , gifted from him,...both ended up,.highly trained,...but, although I have been around cur dogs all my life,..I found it a hard chore, getting them right.... I do think a young lad ,..new to lurchers,..would have had an extremely difficult time.... Commercially bred lurchers obviously have a place in today's running dog scene,..or,..this discussion would not resurrect itself with such regularity...
