Rabbits are no different to most of the critters that we pursue,...life is precious,..everything wants to live,...and I've seen Hares, Foxes and Deer take evasive action on many ocassions... It is their job to survive, and our task as hunters,...to capture them.. This image is just one picture, from a series of action shots, taken by my late friend Adrian Sole... I well remember the day... It was freezing,..a biting cold North wind cutting across the large open warren... Wiltshire's Salisbury Plain,. can be a harsh place and the rabbits that live, deep in the ancient chalk warrens,

That interesting night time scene,..was staged for the TV programe.... The lamp in question was a Swinford Night Light,...real difficult item to handle,..more suited to a Night Watchman or security guard,...than a hunting man.. Halcyon Days, eh....

Not being fully satisfied, with the commercially produced , imported spotlights on offer,...I once thought it a great idea to design my own prefered type of hunting light,...I found a local company and we all sat down around a table and created a genuinely useful, after dark dazzler.... For the life of me , I cannot remember what we christened the tool,..but it was a sleek jet black thing,...great powerful innards, powered by a chored battery off an Angel's hog , its charge pushing out a terrific shaft of blinding white light... We used what is termed, as a momentary switch,..it was activate

I hunted with Paul's Maggie,..he stayed with me, darn sarf,...and he was a sensible lad,...he knew that his 'Reverse Three Quarter Bred Collie',.. was limited,.very fecking limited Most lads who have done a bit are completely aware of this fact... As I said,...we keep the dogs that are suitable for the task at hand,..IF we want something else,.we will go and get it....

Glad you said, 'Horses for Courses ' fellah... If any man really wants a real deal, hare coursing, deer killing jukel,...they are 'out there'... But, a Moucher only needs a cur dog to catch a Kanni or a Shushi,...as and when,... Most men know the difference,..and only a dinilo,..would be dumb enough, to compare an athletic gazehound, to a roustabout rabbiting mutt... Truth is, we keep the type of dog that we need for the job,..end of story..

Age To Enter A Pup On The Lamp To Rabbits
Phil Lloyd replied to springfield's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Facts are, a good'un will take a whole lot of abuse, and the best of the best will take a lot of fecking up,...sadly,.nowadays,..we think to much and are scared shitless, to 'let the dog, see the rabbit -
I think I know the name of that dog,....I would use him too...

Putanges, A Few Observations.
Phil Lloyd replied to mole trapper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
With all the trapping furor that is going the rounds,...I feel we should all be using the most humane tools available. Some traps,..are not quick killers..... -
I bet that youngster will blossom into a real good rabbiting dog..

Indeed it would Shealy, always fancy'd a first cross DH/Whippet [i,v never seen one] but a first cross put to a whippet would be usefull to me. We had several,..back in the day,...the inclusion of whippet blood into the established line of hybrid Deerhound lurchers was made in a vain effort, to save our souls,.. Things were getting emotional,...the Deer Act, with all its many ramifications had just been introduced, so it kinda made sense to curb our enthusiasm,...we ended up with some great wee rabbiting jukels,..but,...our dangerous passion and desire to pursue larger quarry, wa

I use a Shepherds whistle,....when needed...

cracking pic. How are your curs bred We only need rough and ready, rabbiters,...hedgerow dogs, just for a bit of ferreting/marking/mouching, etc,...so a mix of Greyhound,..Whippet and Sheepdog blood serves us well..

You do have a point there Gnasher... There is a time to put a problem to bed,..but,.the decision is a personal one,..down to the individual...Best of luck to the original poster,... take things slowly,...listen to quiet and confident schoolers, folk who inspire you with confidence...hopefully a firm but kind hand will save the day....

I like to do a bit of further education with my cur dogs,.. Our schooling starts from day one,...especially the retrieving business.. My aim is to mentally condition a hunting, coursing, type of jukel to believe that he has no other choice,..than to bring home the bacon...However,..some dogs, (no matter how much effort you put into their training),.are destined,... never to retrieve
