  1. The squeezy peasy method of removing a rabbit's innards,.. has been around for years... Seen air gunners and riflemen doing it very successfully....but,....sometimes, with dogged rabbits that have been hard hit by the determined lurcher or terrier,..it can frequently result in a right, God-awefull,..fecking mess.... The wee knife is my favourite.....
  2. This is not an uncommon occurance,...well done lads for spotting the problem...
  3. That Buster dog looks to be a handy sort of jukel.... Well done to both of you,..just goes to show what can be achieved, by a brace of keen and virile young men
  4. The Merle colouration has definitely come,.. via an inclusion of Border Collie ....
  5. Yeah,.its frustrating ,...but I think you hit the nail on the head, with regards to waiting for the warmer weather, etc. Same as yourself,..I like my cur dogs to fetch shot birds ,..especialy ducks,...so it pays to start them off in the water, during the Summer months...Obviously to produce a good retriever in rivers, lakes or shoreline,..the dog needs to be a confident, strong swimmer. Chucking dummies during the heat, (even getting in yourself) often gets em going. All the best, Phil.
  6. Sorry to hear that,....all the best to her ,...hope everything goes well....
  7. That old Collie dog is right up my street FUJI,..mind you,.he would definitely get me into trouble
  8. I walked out with Spud,...I found him to be a nice enough jukel,...a bit on the excitable side, as some Beddies so often are... I remember the dog with some fondness,..(he was a typical example, of a rough and ready, rabbit dog) and whilst he enjoyed success on the Dales, I personally doubted that he was suitable, for the style of woodland hunting that I was doing back home. When a pro rabbiter from Burnley, used Spud across his own very capable Collie lurcher, I came up and purchased a dog pup from the union...The youngster was, in my opinion,..physically superior to his Sire,..and I ca
  9. The lurcher world is forever changing,...so are the men who keep them,...it is called evolution.... I stopped wondering and worrying about the future,..long time ago.... "What will be,.will be".....
  10. Yes,..weather plays a big part, in whether,...a wild critter lives or dies.....
  11. During the Autumn/Winter months,.into the early Spring,..I trap moles and honour a few contracts, to control rabbits/squirrels, etc... When the weather starts to warm up,..I go on the Wasps.... Been the same now for a long old time,..it's lucky that I enjoy the work, cos in reality,.I can't do feck all else...
  12. Watched several hare shoots, whilst working the ferrets on the hedgerows... In my opinion,..it is a fecking barbaric old business,.....
  13. What are member's opinions regarding the Pro's and Con's of these two breeds please.. I am mostly trapping moles and rabbits, during the Winter months and do not really need, a 100%, off roader,..but it would be handy to have some degree of 4x4, when parking up inside gateways, etc Anything particular to look out for when purchasing a used example ? Many thanks, Phil.
  14. Can I ask what you find her hunting and marking is like given that she is mostly sighthound? Honestly mate as good as any half cross,,, That is a real useful attribute in a rabbit hunting dog It would be a right pain, working in the woods and brash,.. without a reliable marker..
  15. I understand exactly where you are coming from Foxdropper,...and as a lifelong hunting man myself (albeit, pretty much washed up)...I know only too well the agony of being let down (for whatever reasons)...by my fellow hunters.... To say that I have been shit upon over the years,.by various folk,.would be an understatement,.. I've never really been mentally tough enough, to let things wash over me, forgive and forget and carry on regardless,...and this weakness has always been my Achilles Heel...but,...trust me,.life goes on,..with or without you,..so, in my opinion, the only cure for su
  16. I used to think along the same lines as yourself Foxdropper,.....I've spent,.. 'my life with lurchers",.and previously had no time,.. for what might best be termed , 'part timers, wasters and five minute wonders',.etc, etc... However,...as the years have rolled by,..I have seen so many old pals, come and go,..some quit the game, and 'the game' quit on some of them,...and obviously, a large percentage of my contemporaries are now,.long gone,..dead...finito...! There is no substitute for having a good partner in life,.(I've had my wife standing beside me for over 41 years)...and a close
  17. True words,...' Genuine Mouchers are born,..not made."
  18. Now that jukel looks to be a real,.. good time dog...
  19. Most lads,..myself included,...(although I am hardly a lad these days ).....choose to keep the type of hybrid lurcher, that suits their needs,...it really is as simple as that.... To compare,..two completetly different types,..one against t'other,...is foolish... In reality,..if you are a real, dyed in the wool, enthusiast,..with a perchant to improve and perhaps try to create your own desired type of hunting dog,..then a whole lot of judicious breeding (and unfortunately, culling) needs to take place A first cross Collie x Greyhound suits me just fine,...and I've seen some real n
  20. I've mostly kept Mouching dawgs Back in the day,..I did own one or two lamping/coursing types, good honest triers ,that pulled down the odd hare and deer,..but nowadays, I only need a wee cur dog, to assist me in my work.... Anything else would be a waste.. For my Winter work on the rabbits,..I need a hunting up,..100% marking sort,.. gifted with a quicksilver mind and a natural ability to adapt to any given situation or awkward paying job,.. In my mind, the Moucher's dog is an opportunist hunter,..just like its owner...
  21. Stunning work lads,...absolutely stunning... Mind you,..localy,.I am known as the BlurMaster...
  22. Yes,..the woods hold many dangers,...lost more dogs through breakages in woodland, than in any other situation... If they don't try, they don't catch,..and if they really try,.they frequently come unstuck,...it is a dilemma.. Unfortunately,..locally,..there is no hiding place,..no way to avoid the deer,...so,..it's a gamble... Some ya win,.some ya don't...
  23. Back in the day,... Yes,..combined with the GIRO, plus utilising other, bits and pieces of naughtiness,..yes, you could definitely get by,..and I do mean, get by,..with the aid of a good lurcher.... However,..it was a dangerous game to play,..and sooner or later, you will lose.... As for today,...if you are a self employed rabbit controller,...working either on a contract price or for daily wages,...well,..a top class 100% marking/catching rabbit dog is priceless and alongside the ferrets,..it will earn you a lot of vonga.. Fact... However, the concept of a mysterious, canny mouc
