  1. Having an eye for a path or trail is key to netting or snaring any animal. In an area with lots of hares they sometimes run so close that 2 or even 3 can come through the gateway together before the topline comes down.
  2. Cannot beat a slow cooked hare casserole or a pie, as good or better than roe venison to meI have only eaten Hare once (basically the first one that my whippet retrieved one day). It was possibly the worse tasting meat that Ive ever had. I usually cook it and feed it to my dogs, put some veg with it and it makes 4 very big meals so lasts me 2 days with my 2 dogsTry putting the meat in a bowl of cold water with some salt for a few hours or overnight this takes the strong gamey flavour awayDrifter mate, the strong gamey flavour is surely the best thing about it. That's why you can whack in wine,
  3. The younger the better in my opinion but in theory they can be stock broken at any age as long as they haven't already got bad habits. Even if they have it's still often possible.

  5. You'll need to borrow the wifes hair net though.
  6. Poor old Tegan........but if you don't die young you grow old. Comes to us all in the end.
  7. Dead right too. They fire up over nothing at all. One in my village has it in for my son's wheaton/airdale/ grey cross and vice versa. They go for each other on sight.
  8. i reckon their rarer than hens teeth. Thought as much a mate had one 30 year ago he was a real clever dog loved crashing through cover surprised they weren't used more in lurcher breeding. A real nice cross that one stonewall did he make oldbones mate the funny thing was when he was young he had got a few raps of electric wire like most lurchers.while out lamping and day time hunting and it didnt phase him too much.it wasnt until he got too 8ish that he got roasted on a good few wet windy nights out lamping, and that f****d him. so much so if u were between game and wire hed run the lengh
  9. A whippety looking crew you have there Green

  11. I've seen it a lot too. If the foxes in your area aren't lamped much they'll sometimes follow you around all night. This time of year there're a lot of young inexperienced foxes around too. I see a lot more killed on the roads at the moment. Now is the best time to start a young dog lamping, both foxes and rabbits.
  12. Fat is better for dogs than carbs and it's usually free from butchers. Just like bone being better than calcium supplements really. If you have to feed dry foods try to add some fatty scraps from the butcher a couple of times a week and a little raw bone. The best type of bone is soft bone that they can chew up and eat, like chicken necks, lamb ribs or lamb breasts.
  13. You can do it on the bike. Start with just two or three miles at trot if the dog's unfit. After 2 or 3 weeks, or when the dogs used to it, increase to 5, still at the trot. When they can do this easily you can start on the recovery. Trot a mile or so to warm up then increase to a canter or gallop. When they're puffed go back to trot and let them recover while still trotting. Don't forget to walk a bit before home to let the blood flush through their muscles. Also don't gallop them on tarmac or you'll wear their pads sore and set the whole thing back. They need a green lane or a wide verge on
  14. Are there anymore on here from that litter??? I'd be interested to see how they all came out.
  15. When I run my dogs on stony rough ground, stopper injuries are very common and annoying. They don't occur as much on pasture land. If you have the stoppers removed you'll have to run the dogs with bandages where their stoppers were. I've come to the conclusion that I may as well just bandage them up before running on the rough rather than take the stoppers off, then I don't need to bandage them on grass. (Skycat's book gives good instructions on bandageing. Don't get them too tight or too slack. Neither is good.)
  16. Thanks to both of you. I'll try the image uploader next time I have a pic to upload and probably open a flickr account to store some.
  17. For the last couple of years Photobucket has been gradually getting more "clunky" and advert infested. Are there any other hosting sites out there that work properly?
  18. I do like that white dog. (and I don't like white dogs colour wise)
  19. what's phenotype? if you don't mind me asking. The phenotype is the way they are physically, as opposed to the genotype, which is the genetic makeup that caused them to look and be like that. Two dogs with the same phenotype may look the same but if their genotype is different then the breeding results from them can be very different. Hope that helps rather than confuse things more.
  20. This is a half cross bitch bred by Alan, 29 inches TTS and around 75 lbs. Again Dose Alan Charles still breed first crosses? I think he does now and again. If I could find fault with his 1st crosses, they tend to be a bit big . Mines 29 inches and I'd prefer 27 or 28 for bitches ideally and 28-29 for dogs but it is what it is. She's not the best rabbiting dog but makes up for it in other ways. She's a bit of a one man dog too but that's probably my fault as I almost always take her everywhere with me.

  22. Looks like it's got a great coat on it mf. Not a 1st cross pointer/deerhound though? I think it's a deer/grey by GWP. I've only ever seen it in photos on here though.
  23. Always liked this one myself. Owned by "Coverdogs" on here.
