  1. Had one for a few years but only wear it for round the yard. Tough and fits well but it turned water extremely well for a short while but then started to let in at the seams and not water just seeps through (put some water into a dip on the coat yesterday for the dogs to drink and it was on the inside within a minute). Got a Swazi now on a cracking deal so will see if it is as good as people say
  2. Spaniel to a spaniel should do the job. How quickly and effectively it does that job would be hard to judge but as has been said there are a lot of people who don't want a head banger of a hunting dog for beating etc Try it and see what happens but i would hazard that they will make semi useful dogs in the worst case. Problem always comes in my mind (as with lurchers) is if you have one that turns out a cracker what do you then do? Breed from it (and in that case what do you go to without diluting too much one way or the other), buy another similar bred, that might take the wrong way o
  3. Gundogs not running dogs but we will often re-home a dog once it gets to retirement. Couple that have never / will never go anywhere but once they get to the point that they cant work anymore we give them to folk who will have them in the house, take them for walks and generally give them a comfortable retirement. This is very rarely a home where there will be any work done at all. Better than a bullet or sitting in the kennel and on another hand it means that there is kennel space for the next generation. We keep 10 - 15 dogs at a time so if you kept all the retirees you would soon be
  4. No idea about running dogs but they do intrigue me but with gundogs there are probably more seriously quality / gifted dogs in front of agas and chasing balls in a park than there are in the field. One of these would be fine for gundog work. I would take a pup out of one of these dogs that i have seen and judged to be decent. However it might be different with running dogs.
  5. I like the look of the more houndy built ones with a bit of a boof head (looks like your new bitch might go that way when she gets fit) and bearing in mind that i have never spent any time with one this is to be taken with a pinch of salt. Bloke brought 2 to the hill last year at grouse and they were worse than useless. Poddled about doing a sum total of nothing and not really looking for anything. Got cold by the end of the second drive and he had to leave them in the vehicles, which meant that when the beaters got back at the end of the drive they couldn't get into shelter for 2 Ridg
  6. Expanding on my first post, id maybe say that the Taigas aren't as tough as the Glockners.
  7. Lot of speculation. Yes, springer blood came into cockers and if it hadn't then we would not have cockers now that were as good as what we have. I have cockers because i like them, they will do a day easy and 2 days just fine but much more without a rest and they will struggle (or pace themselves which is infuriating). However at the same time there are plenty of all sorts of dogs that cant do a full day because if fitness levels. In any case, she didnt win so cant have had that much of an advantage!!
  8. Shouldn't be a problem but it is a different kettle of fish to being steady for shooting. At some point its likely that the spaniel will run in when it sees the lurcher chasing and will need corrected but if you keep at it then there is no reason it wont work. Plenty of dogs chase hares on the moor and mine don't join in (most of the time) but it is a big temptation! Dan
  9. I have a sucker mount system because didn't want to drill the roof and it works ok. At the moment just have a hand held lamp on it and it tends to 'droop' forward when you let go of the handle so not good for solo lamping but excellent for a 2 man team driver / shooter. Might be better with the proper lamp unit in place that doesn't lean so far forward but will see over time. Only other downside is that your hand gets cold but its a good compromise!
  10. Hi Jok I am sure that with the right parents they would be a useful dog but to my mind you are mixing 2 dogs of differing purposes so in my mind by doing that you are watering down each breed. BUT, a good dog is a good dog and id always find space for something that earns its keep. Id also say that a lot of folk look at them as a cheap dog to work and hence the folk they go to maybe dont always do them justice? However it is worth taking into consideration that i am a bit of a snob when ti comes to dogs and like to keep the registered stuff and i do like my cockers.
  11. As in understand the difference is that the Dovre are wider fitting (too wide for me, no good at all) and have a taller rubber rand round the toes. I have always had Glockners as they are tough as nails but went for the taller ones this time and have been happy so far with the Taigas.
  12. Meinld, Dovre, Glockner, Taiga all get my vote. Havent had others other than Lundhag Professionals which i dont wear a great deal. Havent tried the HanWag, Lowa etc but my Mrs had the Altberg and seems to like them well enough. Not as comfy as the meindl but half the money on ebay!
  13. Personally i find it easier to train a spaniel to a level to get it out into the field than a lab. My spaniels are certainly more steady than my labs. Spaniel training is no harder than labs, just you need to understand what you are aiming for and keep on top of them. I always remember that as long as the dog doesn't chase everything and will come back when it is called then you can take it out shooting.
  14. Obi Have to say that i haven't seen a good one and i have seen a few out. Watered down spaniel drive and smaller than a lab so covered less ground. Probably more because the constituent parts of the parents weren't up to a great deal rather than the concept of a cross is flawed. Personally i wouldn't go for one, straight spaniel, straight lab or a sprocker would be my choices in that order.
  15. Look at them and decide which you prefer and go with that! Rough shooting wise a spaniel is useful as they just love running about in bushes whereas not as many labs will do that for fun. Spaniels feel the cold a bit more when you are standing around and certainly if water work is included. Both, with the right training will do the job. I like cockers so i have a few of them and a lab as a token, my fiance likes labs so she has a few of them and a couple of spaniels to cover all bases. Dan
  16. I have always had the Glockners and loved them. Got the Taigas at the moment and they seem good. Comfy and supportive but a bit more flexible in the sole than the Glockners. For hard work digging i would go with the Glockners as the ones i am sat in at the moment don't feel as tough.
  17. Usually a tenant is required to control rabbits on the land that they rent and as such they are treated differently to game which is covered with the so called shooting rights. it will all depend on the wording of the lease but few landowners will reserve rabbits etc because they are to a degree opening themselves up to compensation claims for crop damage from rabbits, pigeons etc. Check the lease and keep it all on the level but i can imagine there should be too much of a problem. More of the problem could come from the people who have the shooting rights. Dan
  18. Terramycin is apparently the gear for this
  19. Any further thoughts on this. Last i heard was that the decision had been put back over here until July 2018 so we have a bit of a reprieve while they look into the alternatives. Dan
  20. Facebook there tends to be a few knocking about but beware the cheap stuff, no telling which part of it is trained and what it is trained to do! Lot of people will have sold anything that they are going to sell now and be keeping things going forward for the shooting season unless someone offers very decent money. Don't rush in this time of year or you may well end up with something that doesn't come out this year and you struggle to even get right for next season.
  21. Cooper STT on my L200. Just coming up to 2 years and 23k miles and heaps of life left in them. Yes there is road noise but not too bad and you don't go fast in these pickups anyway, i have taken it from Aberdeen to Yorkshire a few times and not broken any time records but at the same time the road noise wasn't unbearable knocking on at about 65. Mine are the 265/70/17 and they do take the speedo pretty much up to bang on so need to be aware of that. Id say that they will probably be fine over the summer but will need replaced before we get into the wetter shooting times on the moor
  22. Animals bring out the worst in people, you always get people who are experts in 5 minutes and are actually just spouting other peoples information off sites like this and magazines. See it all the time, one minute someone is introducing themselves and their first spaniel, lurcher, terrier asking if you really need to feed it every day and why it isnt fully trained at 18 weeks old and then 6 months later they are dishing out tips and tricks like an old pro. Gundogs is more my thing and many a time I sit at a meet listening to some expert trainer to find out on the first drive that he is pic
  23. Anything will dog back but if you aren't a bit careful you can wreck them. Important that its a dog you like to spend time with because they will be your constant companion when the time comes!
  24. Know a litter due shortly Glos / Worcs border. Decent worker to worker bred, no idea what the price is but can put you in touch Dan
