springer spanial (worker / non worker)
Dan Newcombe replied to tillylamp's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
There will always be people who have some sort of bitza or non working bred dog that is good. But then there are plenty that are very average (plenty of dogs with good breeding that are average too mind) and even more that would never even approach doing the job, including those that are never tried If you buy worker to worker then it is more likely that you will get a dog that does the job you want. That said there are a good number of 'quality' animals out there who have never been worked and they will throw good pups. For my money i would prefer to pay a bit more initially and t -
Unfortunately i think you have been give a bit of misleading information. On a very basic level a lab is too big to get into the tight bushes well, think how big a rabbit run is. My old golden would try to get into the bushes but was simply too big The only people i have ever heard claim their lab hunts as well as a spaniel are lab owners and the ones i have seen arent even close. Have you tried to hunt her in any of the training so far? (doubtful if the bloke helping you is a field trialler) Have you introduced her to the gun? (probably not the best situation to do it in) I t

All 3 will do the job just as well as each other AS LONG AS THEY ARE FROM DECENT WORKING LINES You will pay much more for a cocker than a springer and then about as much for a sprocker from most breeders (criminal in my opinion). Therefore i would say that a nice springer would be the way forward. Not as expensive as a cocker but with the work in it and also easier to breed from if you end up with a good one than a sprocker. Dont count out a bigger terrier though that wont go to ground. There agian i have a cocker and wouldnt have anything else! but he is for shooting I would

If it was just me heading out for a mooch around then obviously the gun If it was a group rough shooting it would be the dog (i have forgoteen my gun more than once). I actually prefer working the dog than standing to shoot But like it has already been said.........he makes sure he isnt forgotten!
-
As far as i can see in the last few years there are 2 new breeds in the shooting arena: 1) Just taken up shooting 2) Just taken up dog training 1 is unlikely to have a dog as its a big commitment off the bat and 2 is unlikely to have a gun because they are a strange bunch (obviously not all of them, but most i have met) Id say thats why its hard to find a new gun with a dog. Established people are already on shoots and less guns seem to have dogs these days (thank god in some cases) Of the 2, on my shoot id prefer number 1 (assuming they are safe) because i find 'dog people'

To my mind he looks pretty showy, so might not have the working aptitude as a working cross. Lovely pet dogs the show types but not the best workers and tend to be less trainable IMHO Not knocking the dog but it doesnt look like a worker so the person taking it on might ebar that in mind Dan

I assume that you are asking more where you can get either than which you should get? There is a bloke with a couple of cocker pups left from a good litter. Nice bloke too search for cwnhelbach on google. He is based down just North of Cheltenham Either will do the job as well as the next its the breedING not the breed thats important (but id always go cocker ................ just my preference)

.17 is rubbish for fox. Goes too fast and blows up too quickly! (not saying it cant be done but reliability is important) Think what it does to a rabbit then think if it would penetrate a larger animal reliably! If why not get rid of one of your rifles and get a .22 hornet. .17 rem or a .222/.223 Dan

Poacher Just noticed your sign off 'Lurcher to Lurcher bred lurchers are the Best' Why dont you cross your lurchers out to a beagle, or a fox hound. I have seen these type of dogs work and they do a good job. However they do the job differently to your dogs. If lurcher to lurcher is the way forward how can you argue that spaniel to spaniel isnt? LIFT MY GUN UP IN THE HIDE & DOG BOLTS
Dan Newcombe replied to bucknut's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Nercwys The problem there is that you arent actually adressing the problem, just avoiding it in the short term. Liken it to those harness things for dogs that pull on the lead. You arent actually teaching the dog to not do it, you are just not allowing the behaviour AT THAT TIME. As soon as the harness is removed you get carted again. Also, the dog want to go and pick-up. It hasnt been taight that there is a time and a place (that you decide) for this and therefore will get frustrated at being tied up. Once it get frustrated it MAY start to whine and yap. Best thing is to not t -
Heavy bullets dont fall faster but they are closer to the muzzle when they fall because they are generally travelling slower. Compare a .22-250 and a .222. Same bullet weight different speeds and the .222 will hit the floor closer than the .22-250 giving the impression it has dropped quicker. I think i once saw the experiment dont on TV with a piantball gun quite a few years ago and it worked. Dan

Depends on your shootnig position relative to the target. If you were shooting dead level then the two bullets would hit the floor at the same time in theory. However, to get out to the ranges described you have to 'loop' the bullet, meaning point the muzzle it slightly up. This would mean that the dropped round would hit the floor first. If you are shooting at a can on the floor from a standing position / elevated then the fired round would probably (dependant on the trajectory) hit the floor first as it is being driven along faster than gravity will accelerate something that is

LIFT MY GUN UP IN THE HIDE & DOG BOLTS
Dan Newcombe replied to bucknut's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Need to work on the steadyness. The 'sit' needs to be well ingrained then sit the dog next to you and throw a dummy. Dont send the dog straight away, enforce the fact that you decide when it goes. Work on this until the dog doesnt move. Then pick 3/2 dummies yourself with the dog still sat, sending it for the last one. You can build this up as far as you want but i like to sit the dog 10 or so yards out and then chuck 3 / 4 dummies out. I will then pick up all but one myself and send the dog for the last. The dog has also learnedto associate bangs with work so you need to incor -
You could try kneeling down and caling him in. I let them run right into me and jump up when they are bringing a retrieve back to hand, gets you a bit muddy when you start but they become keen to charge right in and dont circle (in my experience). My cocker will nearly knock me over bringing stuff back and really slams into me. Also worth working the same way with the recall, the dog has to be very enthusiastic to come all the way to you Dan

Cant quite see how the bus driver sitation is any different except for the face that he ddint have control of blades spinning at 200mph. I agree with the above, not surprised but feeling let down by what i can only see as perversion of justice! Imagine the shit storm if an anti got run over and killed, they just have a representitive body with more passion (or you could call it mental instability)
-
So if the RSPCA call and tell you there has been a report of cruelty and say they want to come and have a look then there is nothing they cal actually do if you politely tell them where to stick it? A mate of mine got a call this morning from them, ive told him to tell them to bugger off. The dogs are in a stable with straw beds, 3 of them all in good condition an healthy Dan

Breeding a pointer to a pointer (vizula to gasp etc) is a totally different kettle of fish to putting a Vizula to a spaniel. Like i said, nothing against you doing it and be interested to see how it goes. Whenever i have seen these 'brilliant' crosses in action ive never been that impressed. Yes they worked and did a good job but no better than anything else, plus there are plenty of the crosses that just dont make the grade. Kiwi summed it up perfectly i feel. I have a bit of a problem with the hero worship people give keepers. Just because a keeper had a dog and liked it doe

Agree with Jamie G .22lr and a .243 will set you right for a dual purpose centre fire. They will clear it for just fox and it does a great job but then you dont need a new rifle if you have to take on some deer work I have a .22-250 and a .243 but getting rid of the .243 in favour of a more dedicated deer cal in 6.5x55 Dan

Far from a crime (plus it would seem that if you are anti hunting you can get away with murder anyway!) I cant quite see where this benefit Poacher is talking about will come from. What will the cross do better than a straight one of either. Wont point as well as a Vizula or hit cover as well as a spaniel. In you are looking for something a bit wider ranging go for the Vizula, or i could put you in touch with some spaniels that seem to liek taking in a lot of ground (never in control) Not saying dont do it but am saying that i dont quite see why. Personally i would go with the

I cant believe the last statement from the antis outside the court! Beggars Belief!

I think that they have a point. Makes me a bit uncomfortable when you see these fishermen playing the fish for ages and then sitting it on the bank for a while taking pictures over and over again etc How is it different to letting the deer out of the trailer and chasing it with hounds In what other area would this be allowed, think there is an element of cruelty in there. Whip it out and bash it on the head. Isnt the law on foxes that the coup de grace has to be as quickly as possible. I will also probably not stand with the fishermen because we saw no solidarity from them

If you can send me an email address i will take some and email them as im not so good on the comp! Dan

trainers near northallerton, north yorkshire
Dan Newcombe replied to ruthi's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Cant remember the actual blokes name but think it was Oak Shot gundogs (try google) My mrs went there with her cocker and he was at a group day i once went to doing spaniels I thought he was very good, good with people as well which is important because he is teaching you too! -
Selling my Sauer 202 euro in .243 because im changing calibre to something a bit further from .22-250 Rifle has only seen light use because i recently moved to North Wales where the deer population is limited to sat the least. Screw cut for a T8 (light mark on the barrel from the rear bush) Good shooter and good condition with nice wood Includes 1 inch scope mounts (i have a feeling that they are specialist for these rifles) Lovely rifles, handle beautifuly and point like a dream. Very smooth all round £900 ono Dan
