  1. Thought that might be the case at this time of year, encouraging if they might go back together at some point though, thanks
  2. Got a really stupid problem that I was hoping someone might be able to help with. Have 3 Hobbs at the moment, 2 of which have always been together and one lives alone since his pal died at the start of the year. Like a total berk, I left the hutch open for the pair and one hobb went missing for about 48 hours. When we got him back (neighbour found him) I stuck him back with his mate and they started fighting pretty badly. We took the wanderer out and out him separate for the big but with plenty food and water to recover. Tried them back together in a stable, plent
  3. Penda - you do make a good point on the resources side of things but where do you draw the line. As far as i can see he was pretty much bang to rights and a very silly boy doing that, there - he got what was coming to him.
  4. Glad to see that the general consensus on here it that the bloke is a tool. Doesn't matter what you think of other people owning cats, when it is sat next to a house like that only someone sick in the head would do that. That is someones pet, I'm no cat lover (seems to be a theme on here!) but someone probably thinks a great deal of those animals. Anyone condoning that, how would you feel if someone did similar to your dog that was sat out on the front drive or you found out it was stolen to be a bait dog for fighting gangs? - absolutely agree that he is on a level with dog thieves.
  5. Got some off ebay that were recommended on another thread, thanks for the offer though - always amazing how generous people on here are. Not had a lot of chance to practice but midget gems indoors have provided a good bit of fun!
  6. Real basic newby question but ive just bought one of the £6 chinese catapults from ebay and some ball bearings. Do people find that the standard band is powerful enough or do they swap it out for something more powerful, it feels quite easy to pull back but i havent got the ball bearings to shoot yet. You do swap it out where do i get the alternative from? Thanks Dan
  7. Depending on what you are really looking for Kiltonbeck Rollo might be a good option but he is in North Yorkshire. Belter of a dog and taking my bitch to him back end of this year hopefully and he won the cocker championship in January he is the real deal
  8. Definitely would use him over a running dog, the theory behind using our bitch was as much because finding someone who would want a litter of lab crosses out of their running bitch would have been less likely than someone with a decent dog using it over my lab. I agree that there is probably a reason that they haven't stayed the course and undoubtedly a 3/4 cross would be a better running dog but as an all rounds i like the sound of them - if it turns out OK then a 3/4 could be on the cards in years to come.
  9. I suppose that's the issue with most cross breeding, you don't quite know how they are going to throw in the first instance. Its a way off just now so plenty of time to try and find a decent stud to do the job.
  10. I’ve seen a few racier but IMO (obviously because we breed the line) they are a solid, agile and good to work with temperament. Good mix and she chucks that dog (her brother) around like a rag dog rubbing flat out, really co-ordinated somehow, has a knack. There are a lot of the wire/lab crosses up this way but to be honest I’ve seen very few I would kennel, they would maybe lend a bit of something extra to a running dog though. Never really thought about a Spaniel cross, wouldn’t have thought that they would bring much to the party running wise, they are quick but no top end real
  11. To be fair it is right that a lot of issues on shoots are caused by labs kicking off but as a percentage it’s still pretty low. Out of interest. The picture on the forestry track is the Bitch I have in mind and one on the concrete is her full brother. they are both absolute machines out working. Entirely accept that they are unlikely to be a flat out coursing dog, it’s more a mooching, ferreting, bit of lamping and ideally a bit of picking up if possible - proper all rounder and train ability is important. Hadn’t thought of trying to keep them lighter with some saluki, was th
  12. 2 x 20 bore sbs View Advert Looking to sell 2 x 20 bore sbs shotguns. My wife bought these by accident a few years ago at Holts and we have used them for dog training since then but have got to the point we have too many guns and something has got to go. Denton Kennel - non ejector, one of the firing pins needs a bit of work as occasionally it soft strikes other than that decent condition - £50 AYA (not sure which model but basic) - non ejector, nice gun, decent used condition, would make a good first gun - £125 PM me and i can email pi
  13. I am thinking about crossing one of our lab bitches to a running dog in the future. She is a hellish racy thing which is what we try to breed for the heather hill up here. Fast and Athletic but covered in muscle - she almost looks like she has some running dog in there. At the moment she is 2 so not looking to do this for at least another couple of years - we have a kid on the way and my half plan is to do the cross when it is about 5 for its first dog (so the bitch would be about 7 and we wouldn't register more pups anyway). In my mind i was thinking a grey / whippet cross or a
  14. Agreed, ideally i would like to think that mine are doing this because that's what we are after, clear warrens but you just never know unless you manage to get a fix and dog to a dead rabbit that the ferret has been at and left. Like i say, they seem to be doing a good job but i was wondering how people tend to decide how good a ferret is as once they are underground you struggle to know whats going on. Thanks
  15. I am happy with how they are working and we have cleared quite a lot of ground but i just cant help but think in the back of my mind that we are leaving odd ones behind. I know that they cant get every single one every single time but i like to have good stuff so was trying to see how people judge them. They are coming with fur in their claws but usually they have bolted stuff before hand BUT there have been times when something has 'hole hopped' and then we haven't seen it again so there is something being missed down there sometimes. They are working probably 2/3 days a week so the
  16. Really stupid question but ..... How do you all tell how good your ferrets are at the job. Happy to admit that other than ferreting when we were kids with vicious little horrors we have recently got back into the game and have a really nice pair of hobs - friendly as you could ever ask for and seem to work away just fine. I was just wondering how you guys judge the quality of a working ferret and how good a job they are doing. Our two go to ground well, stay down and we have decent success bolting to guns mainly BUT we rarely have to dig to them and although i have s
  17. Bought a Duracell 9v so had assumed it would be fine. We we shall see. Hopefully This means there isn’t a common thing with them being totally FUBAR

  19. Not even a little bit, would make sense though! Il see when I get home. Cheers
  20. Just put a new battery in this morning and still nothing. Cheers
  21. Just wondering if anyone can help. Splashed out on a ferret finder (from eBay so second hand) and when it arrived seemed to work ok. Come to use it and the detector is no longer making any noise at all apart from a funny sort of wheeze when you turn it on or off. Any tips ops for fixing appreciated. Dan
  22. Interesting thread. Looking to buy something for my .22 for rabbits. Needs to be cheap but decent for the job chapping rabbits in forestry plantings and rigle mounted.
  23. My Mrs is in her boots 6 days a week from August to February and then most days beyond that. She trains dogs and works dogs on the hill and lowground. She has Glockners, Lhotse (old Meindls) and Altberg. Altbergs are ok but she never wears them if she can wear her Meindls on the hill. Just not as comfortable. She does wear them lambing and gardening through so they arent uncomfortable just not AS good as the Meindl.
  24. Glockner certainly get ym vote too. My 18 month old Taigas look a state compared to my 5 year old Glockners, nowhere near as hard wearing despite being very comfortable and good to wear on the hill. next pair will be Glockners of maybe try Lowa Hunters Dan
  25. I have a Zenith Flashdot 3-12x50 and although like it for deer stalking I'm not a fan for smaller stuff a long way out as the dot is too big on high mag. We were smacking some gongs at the weekend and a 4 inch plate 350m away was pretty much covered by the dot. Personal choice for the use described would be a Nightforce. I have a 3.5-15x50 with the dot of death and would have it over the Schmidt for an all rounder.
