  1. Is she hunting or is she just running? You could try making the area that you are in more interesting for her. If she loves retrieving then chuck some dummies around you and send her out for specific ones If she is a hunter then plant some dummies (maybe wrapped in rabbit skins) in an area with no other game, then take her there and let her find the planted stuff. Once she gets a bit bored of either thing call it a day. Hopefully it will slowly dawn on her that the interesting place to be and the place that she will actually find stuff is in the area directly around you. A
  2. I read on here a while ago that the way you cross your dogs has an impact. Think it was something about wheatons and that if you used a wheaton bitch you would get a different type than if you used a greyhound bitch. I have heard this before from pig dog breeders but always thought it was more of a temperment thing What do people think?
  3. I went to Ciren for Estate and Land Management. There is an element of truth in the rich horsy girls comment but thats just a plus, they all like a bit of rough! For farm management i would be tempted to look more closely at Harper, they seem to turf out more farm managers than ciren. But i bloody loved ciren!
  4. I was wondering what sort of nose your running dogs have or would have if they were encouraged to track. When i was away in Aus they used bull crosses (bull arabs) etc for the pigs but generally bigger built (more bull etc in them?) and a lot of them had pretty good noses and good speed although not up to lurcher standards, rabbits would be hit and miss We shoot a lot of deer and a mate is training up a dog for following up wounded stuff and for RTA calls etc. I was wondering if the half cross bull would be any good for this work (bringing size and strength) or maybe crossed back to a
  5. I have heard a lot about the 6mm br being inherently accurate. The previous statement might not be relevant but its nice to know! Those energy diffences are negligable For the actualy work i would suggest also that Rhino Rifles (do a google search) are worth a close look. They are very reasonable prices and very knowledgeable. If you ask them their input they will give you good, impartial advice (that actually led to them loosing a job i was thinking about). Top blokes Dan
  6. 6mm BR is worth a look for your use. Does everything that the .243 does but with less powder, recoil and noise. Its the current must have. But you would have to re load and buy brass which is a bit of a pain. Just a thought, the .243 is also perfect for your needs though. Dan
  7. You do need to let the pup be a pup and not restrict it too much. But There is no reason you cant be gently instilling future lessons. For example, when the pup is playing in the garden or the house sit on the floor and call its name in an excitable voice and let it jump all over you, playing and learning that you are fun to come back to, this will also give it confidence to come right in to you which should help with retrieving later on. When you are wandering round the garden or the field give a whistle peep or a clap and when the pup looks round change your direction, the pu
  8. What do you hope to gain from the cross? My thought is you will be better off breeding to a good springer and ignoring the fashion that seems to be current of trying to change what has taken gererations to complete. If you have dog that you think is a good enough worker and specimen to justify continuing his line then why do you want to effectively end it by intriducing cocker blood? People will have good sprockers but they wont do any different a job to a pure springer or a pure cocker. People will always have a tale of very good dogs that are out of their normal role but i had a gold
  9. My cocker is 17 months now and i feed him anything i have about ranging from venison bones and meat, tripe, dry food and tinned food. He currently has a bag of 'winner' working dog maintenance for the off season but when we get going he will be on some better stuff because its hard to keep the weight on him. I am very relaxed with the training and whenever people ask 'do you train him?' i find it hard to answer because i dont go out to train. we go for walks where i will find plenty of cover to hunt him through and throw a couple of retrieves at the start and as i walk i keep him close int
  10. Born Hunter ......... 'If they had been bred with the intention of taking a few redskins as well then i would be tempted' ........ tosser!
  11. This is based from the whippet endurance thread but i didnt want to hi jack. Ive always wanted a running dog and have recently moved to North Wales so i have the chance to think about it more seriously (i have posted about this before). I have a cocker and a springerdor pup (freebie that im giving a go as a gundog) that will soon be outside (probably in plastic barrel type kennels with a heatlamp for the very cold time). Always fancied a collie type because i would like it to work on a shoot as well but would a whippet, grey or a cross be ok to live outside with the other 2? And ho
  12. Yes, by the looks of it they have totally over reacted to a frustrated comment (and he has rightly pointed out that he could nail the fuckers with a bow!). BUT These days they are under such scrutiny that there is very little room for common sense. If that bloke had shot someone it would have eventually come out that he had make that idle threat and then the press would have had a field day. They are damned if they do and they are damned if they dont. Its is ridiculous how persecuted people get for having a license, nothing would have happened if he had an unlicnsed gun.
  13. I know what you are saying but id rather them not take everyone down with them! And comments like 'wait for him to fill his pens then stick it in there' Makes you wonder where these people come from.
  14. Have a read of the thread titled 'curious' (a couple who have posted here already have commented) Id be interested in the opinions of these machos who would 'barrel it without a second thought' etc Generally quite a good response to an idiot i think! Dan
  15. Thankyou for your views and the sensible outlook. Regarding the dog shooting, i agree that there are times when it is necessary That was more of an aside to the other issues that i raised. But it is unlikely his FAC has a condition for shooting dogs and a shotgun in a hen coop, which will do more damage, the dog or the gun? The indication from the post is that he made no attempt to catch the dog because he only heard second hand that the dog was a bit feisty with people, he would have known himself either way if he had tried to grab it. THINK BEFORE YOU POST edit from the thread there
  16. Out of curiosity I have been wondering for some time about the mentality on this website. There seems to be a lot of 'bad ass' immature people knocking around with the pre requisite posturing and strutting. I had a scan through here recently and tried to keep an open mind but i was basically amazed (in a bad way) how many immature morons that there are on here (not to put too finer point on it) A couple of topics come to mind, the titles are not 100% accurate but this is the general theme - Bad keeper, shot his dog - That is illegal, you will loose you license if the autho
  17. Most important thing to do is to make sure that the dog is busy and doing something when you are getting them used to the noise. If they have the working drive then have them hunting when a shot is about to go off. Even if you have a friend firing the shot from a distance away. Like a twonk i basically ruined my first retriever because (as a young kid) i thought it looked cool having her with me clay shooting. Because there was nothing to do she quickly decided she didnt like the bangs and it took a lot of time and work to get her over it (sher was never the same). As they are wal
  18. That someone was me! Out of these two i would be inclined to go for the working cocker. many people have and are happy with the spockers but these days the working cockers are pretty good so if you like the look of them why not just go for that breed? You have said that you like the lok and the work done by the cockers you have seen, that sounds like a decision made. To my mind there is no benefit to be gained by crossing the springer and the cocker, they do the same job the same way. Its just a fashion and the cross breed is not often much cheaper than the pure cocker and springers.
  19. Cockers and springers are pretty much exactly the same if you are walking up and beating. I personally like cockers so i got a cocker and he is a lovely little chap. everyone else on the shoot i keeper has springers. that said, there is probably a reasonthat they all work springers, possibly you will have to go further for a cocker. I like to see the parents work and it is just lucky that the next door keeper has nice quiet cockers. Otherwise i was all lined up with a springer form a mate on my shoot. You will always put more into a dog you actually want than if you are thinking '
  20. My cocker was the same and still will sometimes take a couple of steps (cockers are notorious). Sounds like you are doing just right, moving the dog back to the point of command. Most important thing i found is to make sure the dog doesnt get stressed doing the training. When my dog got reprimanded a couple of times he got upset and then really wanted to be close so i would take him back to the spot and sit him down then give him a pat and do some hunting. That way the sit is still reinforced with a reward and you finish on a high note. I would say that there isnt a rush with these
  21. Looking for a pup/ young dog really, no more than 6 months. Is there anyone in North Wales who would let me come along for a lamp, dig, mooch etc as i dont have any ground up here but want to get out and about. Dan
  22. Diolch Not in any mad rush, seems sense to wait for the right dog! Dan
  23. Id be interested in a pup if you did this cross and a collie cross hasnt come up. Dan
  24. Any one on here from North Wales? Fairly new up here and looking for a collie cross grey/ whippet (maybe with a small bit of something else considered ie. bull, bedlington, wheaton) if anyone knows of anything decent going. Looking for a pup though, that way its my fault how it turns out! Also get around West Midlands so any pups round there considered too What do you guys run generally up here? Dan
  25. My thinking (based on gundogs) is that there is an element of luck every time you get a pup whether you get a good worker or not. Getting a pup from working parents increases your chances of getting a good worker because the parents have got that 'x factor'. Selective breeding in breeds like spaniels and collies shows this the best. Show strains of these breeds do not have anywhere near the drive or instinct to work as selectively bred workers to the point where there is no overlap in the two types. Im not saying that there arent any show bred dogs that cant do the job but the traini
