I have 2 with sort of kind of Maesydderwen breeding in one way shape or form somewhere in them and they couldn't be more different dogs. Didn't buy them because the lines they carry, more for the general way that they are bred. We have others from Whaupley and Kiltonbeck lines and none of them would let you down either. Once you get into good lines then you are looking at much of a muchness I would say. Only thing is that if you have a dog of a certain line, every time you breed it you are potentially moving further away from that line purely due to the fact that you don't wan tin bre

What's The Best Dry Food
Dan Newcombe replied to lennon's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Burns is very pricey Ours are all on Chudleys working crunch all year round regardless (apart from the pups which are on Chudleys puppy) Cockers and Labs and they all seem to do pretty well on it. Just vary the amount that they get dependant on the work that they are getting. I was on the Skinners working 23 until it went from £15 to about £19 over the course of about 2 months! Before that I was on Dr Johns and found that I was feeding a lot of it to keep the condition on the dogs (and therefore cleaning a lot of other stuff up!). Bulk it up with a bit of mince from the fro -
Advice Needed On Soft Springer Bitch
Dan Newcombe replied to craig09090's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Firstly, do very little to start with, just enjoy getting to know her and building up a trust. Go right back to the basics and sitting with the food bowl etc then progress from there as if you are training her from scratch but progressing through the stages much quicker because she should already know them Or that's what I would do anyway. If you have other dogs make sure and take her separately plenty of times so that she bonds with you rather than the other dogs as well or you will store up problems for yourself! Dan -
Ive got a hellish leggy cocker dog that I was looking at yesterday and thinking he would be good back to a whippet but I have always wondered why more people don't use the right lab in a lurcher. Always figured it was a speed thing but a 3/4 should be alright? Dan

For Sale Salomon Super Mountain 9 Boots
Dan Newcombe replied to Dan Newcombe's topic in Clothing & Footwear
Bugger, thought i had it all on there. £60 plus post or pick up near Kelso in the Borders Cheers for pointing that out Dan -
Size 44 Brilliant tough boots with quite a stiff sole so excellent for digging (these ones have never been used for digging, soles are untouched). Have seen some wear but barely any in the great scheme of things. Would keep them but I have been told that I have too many boots taking up too much space so some have to go. Go well with yeti gaiters with the stiff sole and the crampon lips.

Why Are The Old Breeds Of Gundogs Still Not Used?
Dan Newcombe replied to stroller's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Its a catch 22. They can (not always) take longer to mature: Because of this less people use them, which means less are bred, which means people charge silly money for them, which means less are bought, which means less people use them, which means less are seen .......... and so on! Eventually you end up with a very small gene pool of useful dogs and it takes a huge amount of work to get them back (look at the cockers though, it can be done) When I got a retriever I really wanted a golden, went looking and they were like hens teeth and when you found a litter half promising th -
Skeldale at Thirsk do docking, just taken a litter of cockers to be done

Have a look on Ebay at the mountaineering stuff, Scarpa, Salomon, La Sportiva etc. I have a couple of paris of Salomon Super Mountain, got them for £40 each and they seem good. Very stiff in the soles, good for digging.

Ask to see the papers and if he can't provide them then I would say he is dodgy as hell

I have glockners because they are a bit narrower fitting than the Dovre and fit me better. I wear mine a lot but I do rotate them with another pair the same as much as I can and I brush them off when I finish. Doing this and keeping them waxed regularly so they don't dry out seems to be the key! If these boots don't last long enough for you then a) I don't know what will and you aren't looking after them

Dogging back will ruin a spaniels pattern etc in its purest form ie, dogs taking in whole fields and hedges (the proper and efficient way of doing it) However It is time well spent if you are sensible and dont have time constraints. It can be a goot opportunity to get some game in front of a young dog when you are on your own with no pressure. Hunt the dog close, as if you were shooting and stop it every time something flushes. You will see plenty of flushes and have plenty of training opportunities as well as getting used to working the dog. You do need to be vigilant thou

As has already been stated, you need to know that the dog will drop on command every time, practice in an open field until you are happy. After that it is a case of keeping it close and a very close eye on it, you will see when it is about to flush something with the way the dog acts. Be ready, at the moment the game flushes the young dog will hesitate (at least the first couple of times) and you need to be right in there on the stop whistle, as soon as you blow the stop get yourself over to the dog to reinforce the command and settle it down. If the command has been drilled in suffici

Ive got a cocker by Mallowdale Gun and he is a monster! one of the biggest cockers i have seen and he is only 8 months old! Even with the stud fee, registration and jabs there is a pretty penny to be made with a litter of pups. Maybe not if you count all the time you sit looking at them but if you just count the time when you actually do something with / for them then the best part of £6,000 is good money. Not saying they arent worth it but i do sort of wonder where it will all stop price wise!

Had one and sold it becuase i got wetter from the inside than the outside. Got a ridgeline roar which i think is much better, still not very breathable but definately better!

Wildfowling And Rough Shooting Dog
Dan Newcombe replied to EnglishBulldog's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
I would say that the OP has made a decent decision although i would also say that a springer would have been just as good a choice. Not worse, not better but definately as good. If you buy a lab for rough shooting then in pretty short order you will end up buying a spaniel because the lab will never hunt like a decent spaniel. People claim to have labs that hunt like spaniels but i have never seen it. I have seen labs hunt well but nothing like spaniels for getting into cover. In time if you buy a lab you will see it isnt made for rough shooting, they are made for retrieving. When you -

I know what you are saying but that isnt the birds problem that you have to exercise your dogs. Get the same argument from people with dogs bombing around lambing fields off the lead (not that im saying you would do that). You tell them to put the dog on a lead and then say 'i need to exercise my dog and walking on a lead isnt enough'. As i say to them, that isnt my problem i dont force you to keep dogs.
