    Realistically the only thing that stops poachers is being there, all times of day and night and disrupting them. Night vision, thermal and lamps all play the part and if you make it so that the lads can't have a peaceful night then they will move on and annoy someone else! There wont be a product that will really help, trail cams so but they aren't much of a deterrent. Get out there and have a jolly old time chasing them over the fields!

    Never sure on this one. We have a lab that is a b*****d for chasing and hunting up. He just wants to find something and doesn't listen when he gets 'in the zone'. We have gone back to basics and he is excellent all the time and then just has a brain fart chasing a hare on the moor etc. Cant decide if a whack from a collar would sort him out?

    In a similar way you shouldn't really need the stay command ………….. stop = sit = stay Once you tell the dog to sit / stop it shouldn't really move until you tell it otherwise.

    Looking for some rabbit shooting in Aberdeenshire for training gundogs, mainly spaniels. We have older dogs as well as young stuff coming on so if numbers need hit hard we aren't just bringing stuff on, can make a good dent! Rushy, rough grass, moor edge ideal but anywhere with rabbits in cover is great. I know its an outside shot but if you don't ask you don't get! Cheers Dan

    Good thing to try and do but do be aware that there are many, many pitfalls that are waiting to trip you up. Think about the tasks that they will be able to do without having the tickets (quad etc), think about how many hours and when they would be working, make sure that you won't be doing anything that could be less than compliant with 'best practice' that they might report. Although the college will be very keen to help you if they are getting a placement out of it they will no doubt take very much a back seat if something goes wrong, it is unfortunately a common problem these days

    I quite like the Simmons WTC. You will get one with lots of change from that budget. I have a 3.5-10x50 that used to be on a .22-250 (swapped it for a night force) and it did a sterling job for years! Have kept it to put on my .22 if i can figure out how to get it mounted without fouling on the rear open sight (i can feel an angle grinder coming on!) Other than that the Hawkes seem pretty good

    Got a silverpoint search as well. No where near as bright as the ebay one (as recommended by Lid) but the 2 AA batteries have lasted for 3 full charges of the ebay rechargeable ones so far and still going . Might have to invest on some of the uprated batteries but i have found that this battery type does seem to be quite temperamental, we have a set that has only been charged 3 times and have totally died!! Anyway, both are good but overall if i was doing it again i would go with the 'silverlight search' might have been £20 but overall a better buy (albeit not as bright or focusable b

    They will all do you well. I have an L200 and suits me down to the ground. On my second one now and I wouldn't swap it for anything else to be honest. MPG is killed on mine as it is on Cooper STT mud tyres but that does mean that you don't get stuck which, with the low miles the pickup does I value more! With road tyres on and on a long run it was giving 39mpg on the trip computer which surprised me! If I was you I would set my budget and then see what you can get within that money and choose the best condition, milage, spec etc example that you can and not worry too much about

    Arrived and seems a pretty good bit of kit, bloody bright! I just can't see why they use those daft batteries, they never seem to last very long before being knackered and not working! Would much rather them use a standard battery. Otherwise very pleased so far! Dan

    Can anyone tell me why manufacturers insist on putting a strobe feature on their torches. The only one that have seen without this is the LED Lenser P7 (i think). Just bought a new torch (T501??) with this feature and although its brilliant the stone is annoying. Does anyone know how you can avoid scrolling all the way through every time? Thanks Dan

    If they want it for walks in the countryside then the colour makes zero difference. In fact a show bred lazy thing is probably what they want or it could drive them mad! If they want it to work occasionally then again - colour is not important. If you want something that will graft and work to a high standard you are on balance probably better going with yellow or black (in the same way you are better with a yellow / black lab than a Golden / Flatcoat retriever, because there are more to choose from!). Not saying you don't get chocolates that will do the work, you just have less choice

    Exactly why you should go to a trainer, even just couple of times. Group sessions can also be really good because the dogs gets used to working in company They will teach you how to teach the dog! 5 months is very young though so I wouldn't expect much concentration wise from some pups. We have litter sisters here, 8 or so months old. One is really focused on you, concentrates and you can get stuff done with her ........... very rewarding. The other has the attention span of a gnat and although loves being with you she is not ready for anything structured, just basic all t

    No offence but before you go out and buy what might be a decent well trained dog, you want to spend a bit of time figuring out how to use such a thing otherwise no matter what you pay and how good it is you will simply wreck it! £2200 isn't a lot for a fully trained dog. You either need to buy a pup (£500) or not sell a pup (£500 again) so your margin is £1,700. Feed the dog and jab it etc for 18 months minimum (~£300) so now you have £1,400. Look at your pay cheque and tell me how many hours that would buy you to spend on training a dog over say 18 months, call it 7 hours a month if you g

    I like yellows myself so we have 3 yellow / red and one black to run with our cockers. You don't see many Choc labs out shooting to be fair and a lot that you do see around aren't particularly athletic looking to work day after day. Not saying that they wont but they wont do it with the pace of a more athletically built dog. Having said that I have seen a few pretty good chocolates, no worse than you average yellow / black but certainly no better. Lines wise it entirely depends on what you want from the dog.     As we come to the game shooting season I have for sale my Barbour Berwick Endurance jacket. Size - Large Selling because I have too many jackets and this is barely used, looks pretty much new, no marks or pulls etc. Only chosen this one because of the condition and the good condition is because I found it didn't fit quite as well for me as some of my other jackets.     You could also do a lot worse than taking him right back to the very basic stuff and then working up as you would with a new pup. This will help build his confidence in you because it will be familiar to him and any training is beneficial. You will obviously progress through the stages pretty quickly as he should already be competent at a lot of the stuff but it will build your relationship. Thanks Dan
