  1. Interesting comments lads... Personaly,..I like all types,...for me, the lurcher is the ultimate canine... Nowadays, I run a wee 21" cur cross,...I only hunt up and ferret a handful of woodland conies,..so for me, she is just fine.. If I was after other quarry,..I would use a different type... I have had a long life with lurchers and always kept the style of worker, to suit the chosen quarry,.simple really
  2. Rather than speculate,..perhaps the only accurate way to find out just how much a man has earnt from his labours,.... is to ask him and then,... you will know
  3. Herding dogs are an amazingly varied type... Been around such animals for over 50 years,.....I really like them... When choosing a sheepdog Sire or Dam, to create a roustabout lurcher,...I try to see the animal off its own ground,..well out of its comfort zone...A lot of dogs look ok when they feel safe and sound,.but, in my experience, this is not always a true picture... Nervy, shy collies are a pain to train,..likewise noisy divy things,. that are all gob... Obviously, such beasts can still produce a good end product, but why take the chance...far better to wait for a quieter, more
  4. I think whether you have a lamping dog on a slip, or walking alongside you,.... free as a bird,.is like everything else in life,....it is a personal choice...
  5. Wires generally do the job,...but, if you have to use the rifle/shotgun,..then maybe change your approach/time, etc,..come at the job from a completely different angle,...be versatile,...be sneaky..
  6. Wooden tunnels have always been the master when it comes to getting rats into a feeding mood,..they like the feel of the timber,..it is so natural to them. My best bait tunnels are fairly long,..far longer than a cubby for spring traps... I like to get the rats well into the tunnel where they can feed in safety. Obviously you camouflage the tunnels with some natural debris/brush, etc... Whatever you do,...do go careful,.cos it is getting dangerous, out there..... All the best, Phil.
  7. Lambourn was good craic,...was at the first,..and the last...
  8. Bred several of this type in the 1980's.... There was a fair bit of ambiguity (bullshit) doing the rounds back then.... Mine were no mystery,...simply my old hunting bitch Mercedes put to a big ugly sheepdog...
  9. That is great news Penchecker.. Good advice regarding the Rimadyl...
  10. Depression is terrible thing,...the Black Dog brings a terrible curse,.. he can visit you at any time.... I have lived with this malady for over 50 years,...could never kill off the fecker,..and God,. I've tried.
  11. I remember that it was one hell of a long drive to Diss....
  12. You and me,.. are in the same boat.... My young, home bred cur ,..really is a total ball -breaker.... Got in last night,..went outside and noticed that she had chewed through the TV ariel cable Thank feck the guy next door is a sparky !!
  13. For an active working dog,..the success rate is not too good... Obviously, you have to do something,..but do ask around and be prepared to travel in order to secure the treatment that offers the best hope. There are different methods of operating on the cruciate,..some more expensive/worthwhile than others... All the best to you and the wee tyke,...regards, Phil.
  14. I like Kelpies as a pure breed,..real impressive at what they do... Seen a few Greyhound x Kelpies,.plus some lurcher crossbreeds that have had a smidgen of the Oz herder in em...It is often difficult to spot though.... All in all,..I think that they make for a real nice type of rabbiting dog,...similar to a good Border collie type. Kelpie blood seems to be a useful ingredient for inclusion in the creation, of a rough and ready mouching pal
  15. Some lovely lurchers here lads .... This is old Speckle,...not up to much,.(certainly no world beater),..but came along during a real bad time in my life,... She cheered me up no end...
  16. The various pastoral breeds, still used for working and herding tasks,..usually offer something worthwhile to justify their inclusion within most types of hunting dog...
  17. What a superb ending to the last episode of Peaky Blinders... The actor playing the main character excelled himself,...truly well done... I love to see a genuine craftsman in action,...and that guy sure knows his craft...
  18. Yeah, a strange and antiquated term, to describe the killing of a large critter... Facts are, a Fallow Buck would take a fair amount of bludgeoning,...seen it done,..its a bit grim The article sounds a wee bit inacurate,...suspect even...
  19. That is a big old stewing buck,.best get his coat off asap,..preferably whilst he is still warm Keep up the regular pics and enjoyable scripts,...
