  1. Good, heartfelt advice from Skycat... I would only add,...become a friend to this young lurcher... Don't worry about any training issues,....just be good mates,....the rest will follow...
  2. Seen a fair few Plummer Terriers,...I realy like their smart look,... and often fancied keeping one for those awkward rabbit jobs, where a lurcher is not allowed on or it is simply too dangerous for a fast dog....I think they would be real handy for the down and dirty , rubbish strewn areas, backs of factory unit type contracts. Bet you could also have some great fun with em' bushing out rabbits and muntjak etc.. Yeah,..I've got the work for one,....but,....I just couldn't do it,......it would never feel right....
  3. Keep up the further education,..but don't overdo it....
  4. It has been a concern of mine. Sensible attitude there guys...
  5. Well, I was a member of The Guild,..in fact, I was their Southern Area Rep.... When I originaly joined, I thought it was just going to be a wee private club for like-minded lads, to have the craic.. However,.when the courses started and it was made obvious to me that my role, would be to educate local members and newcomers to the mole catching business,...I was shocked and shot out of that fecking door,.. as though my arse was on fire. I was also an early member of the Traditional Mole Catchers and once again, I got it all a bit wrong... I am a trusting old fecker,...possibly a wee bi
  6. I think Heritage wins the prize....The Queensbury Fox Trap,...unfeckingbelievable...
  7. Raw green tripe is an excellant additive to the diet of a working dog... Locally, it is real hard to source,..most Abattoirs prefer to supply the pet food wholesalers.. I raised many litters of running dogs on sheeps heads, raw green tripes and lamb carcases... Great times going to collect the dog meat,.we thought we had hit, pay dirt back then... It is a great shame that the situation has changed....
  8. Its good to talk,...and often a necessary evil....££££...
  9. I'm going to sound like an anti now,,,,and yes I'm replying again ,,,lol You say you kill for sport,,,,do you belive that to be more "MORAL" than a man killing a pest for another man,,,,, That's real heavy man,..yeah,...ride on brother....
  10. I think you are on the wind up Kevin..... Obviously no sane person would get a kick out of destroying new blood,..but when working for wages,..a young rabbit, getting back to ground on a deep old place can cause all manner of problems...Time is of the essence,...its a case of in and out,.on to the next job... Surely you know that...
  11. I'll never give up mouching,...none of us can, eh... No,..its a bit of physical,..and mental with me (mind you, I've always been a touch mental) Me and Rosy celebrated 40 years of marriage t'other day,.. and I just thought back, at all the days and nights she has had to put up with dawgs,dawgs,... fecking dawgs... Poor lass,....I think the day has come, to devote a wee bit more time to her.... Yeah, the young cur bitch took a right hard tumble on her first run the other morning... We were far from home,.on an invite,.so there was no going back,.plus our hosts had already twigge
  12. Cracking images Andy... I'm of the same mind as yourself,...only my attitude has come about, due to age and ill-health,...but,..nowadays,..I just want to go for quality sport ( the craic and good company of course),..over sheer quantity.... Keep on,.keepin on....
  13. That's a fact,..and it is a privilege that won't be forgotten.... Super pictures from Joel.. These few images are from our recent trip 'oop North'.. Fenn nails a bolter. Top man,..top ferret... The Big Man himself.. We came off the hill with a few rabbits,..all hard earned,...and then headed for the nearest chippy and onto the Pub....Once again, my thanks to TOMO and VIN for showing a soft Southerner and his wee Collie cur,..their take on the rabbit catching game... Much appreciated fellah
  14. Goodonya Butty,.. I would only endorse every word that you have written,..both Tomo and Vin are great hosts... Fair minded men and generous in their praise... When I was a young man,..ALL hunting men were like them,...genuine and honest... What the feck went wrong with our game... Anyway,..great thread,...all the best to you... Kind regards, Phil.
  15. Feck me Brother,..sounds like you had the day from hell Mind you, it is often a risk when you walk out with strangers,...there is no substitute for teaming up with genuine Goodfellas.. Over the years, I have spent a lot of time with various lads,..all of them trustworthy men,..the types that would never leave you in the lurch. Sadly,..as the years pass by,..most of them have hung up their net bags ,.sold their lamps and decided enough is enough...and the best of them,...are long gone..dead and buried. So now you know the score,..pick your hunting partners carefully,..life reall
  16. I've survived in this game for several years... It has often been tough, but all things being equal,..I think you make your own luck..
  17. Whilst a competent bone man or manipulator, will have more knowledge of a lurcher/coursing dog, than a Vet who only deals with pet dogs, hamsters, cats , etc,...a specialist running dog vet, will usually speak plainly to his client. By that I mean ,..he will have seen such things many times and will talk to you, realistically....... Facts are, a genuine damaged cruciate ligament ,.either torn or stretched, in a fast and powerful dog,...is not good....
  18. Lovely looking animal...real handy type of thing... Getting dropped off,..and lamping back homeward,..is a good way,...and sometimes,.. the safest ..
  19. Imbras are superb traps for rabbits,..real efficient in sandy warrens and deadly in a block trapping situation. They are also extremely well constructed,..this would be a determining factor where Far Eastern production is concerned. I feel that it would be far too expensive to produce them nowadays... This is a shame...
  20. An excellant project,..keep at it...
  21. Great feeling mate.. Almost a,.. "I breathed an audable sigh of relief ',..kind of moment... Onwards and upwards now...
