Canny wee dog there WR.... Yeah,..I think some guys get a mite bit confused.com....with work and play... I've spent a lifetime hunting rabbits,...first as a poacher,.then in latter years, as a Pest controller... There is a massive difference,..both in methods used and obviously in one's attitude... Initially,.as a young man,..I had pretty fair lurcher dogs,..the main reason being,..I hunted continuously and walked wherever there was game to be taken,...and did not give a feck. We went out, night after night,..no need to get up for work,...I just did not go... I had ye

Good post,...I like ya script...

@ TOMO...the numbers game,.. has passed me by... Used to night shoot, hundreds and hundreds of rabbits,..also ferreted most days and even caught a few bunnies, on the lamp... The drop boxes were a godsend (they were working 24 hrs non stop) and always bumped the daily catch up no end,..The deep sand warrens were cleared with a combination of ferreting and Fenn trapping. The Imbras and Carrot cages also mopped up stragglers. This continuous war of attrition, combined with running a productive snare line, also accounted for thousands more shushis....It was a well paid (and seemingly endl

Many years ago,... I travelled the length and breadth of the UK ,.searching for the mythical Smithfield Collie.... We had relatives in New Zealand working with Huntaway types that were often referred to as Smithfields, so it was obvious that such critters existed... Most of the photos that my kin sent over, displayed what we today would term as a Beardie type... Several decades ago,..I bred a few litters.. using a localised sheepdog/cattle dog,... I tried to create my own Smithfield 'look-a-likes' . They were variable in type,(and in performance),..in short, some did, and some fecking di

Personaly,...although of excellent quality,...and obviously taken by a man who knows his camera... I find the picture of the muzzled greyhounds and their quarry,...to be strangely depressing... How,...did it all come to this.......

Collie Greyhound Pictures ...
Phil Lloyd replied to hare_n_hounds's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Lurchers that have the blood of the Collie, flowing through their veins, are amazingly varied,. You get all sorts,..big'un's, wee'un's, thick set hulks and slim backed racy feckers. Had all types over the years,...good fun.... -
That is great,..in an ideal world,...but I do believe there are variables to such a statement... Personaly,..I don't want dogs holding netted rabbits that are already, in the bag,..there is no point.... But,..in bramble ditches and deep cover,..it is often difficult for a keen dog to see if a rabbit is well meshed or is going to get out...Often the operative is a fair way off,..maybe dealing with other captives and in such cases,.the dog has to do something...We work deep chalk and flint locally,..and no way do I need a rabbit to get back to ground.... Of course,.on an open warren or

@ Tiercel... To be honest,..I am the same as you when it comes to setting a bag full of purse nets... These days, I only ferret with lads that know the craic and can be trusted to throw a safe net.. They have been rabbiting for a long old time and it would be embarasing to walk behind such experienced operatives, checking their work... But, I have hunted with a few careless, gormless feckers who set nets like they do everything else in their lives,...fecking lazily Nowadays I rarely set hundreds of purse nets. We just don't have the large numbers of rabbits to warrant the tas

A keen dog man,..will always have a dog of some kind... Times may change,..the quarry may change,....and his own mind set may change... But a genuine hunting man,..will always have a dog...

There will always be lads that fence hop and freelance,...did it myself for the first 40 years It is a stange thing,..but when I finaly stumbled onto some private ground,...I used to get right vexed if I noticed that guys had been taking any of my rabbits,...but, as my dear Wife said,.."You would have done just the same,..so bloody chill out " Best way to stop folks taking your game,..is to take it yourself...
-
You sure have some great sport with that wee dog...

That is a super wee post Rabbiting Man... It is good that you are getting the youngster into the hunting life,...you will never regret it... Keep up the good work lads,..and get them young boys out and about,.whenever you can

Proper moucher's dogs....real nice.... All the best for the future...
-
This is Banjo,..litter brother to Sirius's youngster .... They are bred, lurcher to lurcher,..mostly Collie/Whippet and Greyhound blood...
-
You'll be right with that youngster,...he has a good mouth,..just like his Dam...
-
I would agree there...

Patience is the key... A working dog is a valuable possession,.it can earn you a good living,..and most definitely keep the wolf from the door..SO,..let it be a baby,..cosset the wee fecker,..spoil it,..give it what it wants... It will soon be payback time,...the day will dawn when school is over,...... then life gets harder..

With regard to Fenn Traps,...they will catch in all types of situations,..but,.to minimise foul catches and misses,..I have found that the Fenn (being a jump trap)..are best used, by placing them in a tunnel or well fitting, natural cubby,..this forces the target, twixt the roof and killing jaws.... Just an opinion,.....you can set traps how you wish...... its a free country...

Charging For Stolen Traps
Phil Lloyd replied to perthshire keeper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I can see where Perthshire Keeper is coming from.... However,..the most important thing for a Pro-Trapper to consider,..is the customer... Facts are,.a regular client is a bill payer.... I've had some mole and rabbit customers, for over 30 years,...and they have looked after me handsomely... Once you have been hit by a trap thief,..the job is fecked anyway.. It is pointless laying more traps, cos the feckers will simply come back,..(I've lost several hundred over the years) Sometimes ya just gotta take it on the chin,.. and walk away... It hurts,..of course it hurts,... -
Fair play...

Beautiful..

This is an interesting discussion.. Personaly,...I feel that is wasteful to become,... too kennel blind... I have used all shapes and sizes of crossbreed hunting dogs,..but have remained a staunch supporter of the herding breeds..I find them easy to handle........ I understand them... However,..I think that it is foolish to own something that is, in reality,.of no fecking use... Facts are, what is suitable for one part of the country,...might not be as handy in another... Nowadays, I prefer to work alongside dogs that favour the tasks set before them,..and if this me

Sounds like you have fell on your feet with your new pup.. Facts are,.most pups that are bold, visibly confident and full of life...and with half or three quarter, Greyhound blood,. flowing through their veins, are always going to be physically capable of catching somefeckingthing ! The critical thing is temperament...!!!!!! However, as in most things ,..you have to choose carefully.... Best wishes for the future, regards, Phil.

Dave has been a real good friend to me over the years,..and helped me out,.. when I was down.... I have never forgotten that....
-
It has been real busy the last few months... We took the mole trapping contract on a large sporting estate,..it has paid extremely well and kept the wolf from the door. The downside, is that most of the pastures and grass fields are part and parcel of a commercial pheasant shooting enterprise...The area is also lifting with roe and muntjac deer... So,..ruling is,.no dogs on, until the shooting is done and dusted. With that in mind, I decided on a day off and to have a mouching trip into the next county. After a short journey,..I arrived at Sirius rabbiting ground, and armed with a bra
