  1. Its strange that a collie dog gets to 8 years, without crunching a chuck,..then suddenly turns rogue Unfortunately, if the dog needed some shiplap treatment before it would let its prize go,..I cannot see it taking to chicken watching ever again... Poor wee critter,..something has obviously gone drastically wrong oop top....
  2. Cannot see why you had problems.... I gave you that advice, because the style of trap was new to you.. I wanted to impress upon you, the need to set the pin so that it would not fall back into the wee hole on the trigger plate.. I only meant to help you,.nothing more than that,...and I have certainly never laughed at you.. I don't find anything about you funny....
  3. Facts are,..if a low-life divy really wants to slink over a fence or garden hop,...and chor your belongings,.it is up to you to make life difficult for the verminous fecker...Lots of ways to achieve some measure of security,. nothing is guaranteed and no method is 100% foolproof,...but you have to try. Vigilant dogs are top of my list...obviously robbers can avoid them and if desperate, will inevitably try to silence them,.but for the average opportunist thief,.that is often a bridge too far and they usually look elsewhere. I hate the feeling that one experiences , next morning,.after bein
  4. Such a manual would be extremely useful,...I'm sure it could be done...
  5. That is good news Ian... I sent a few netting photos up for Glenn,...great to hear that the project is progressing....
  6. Go for it... I am a big fan of the whippet, whether purebred, working lines or non-ped race dogs. They are supreme hunters,...quiksilver fast and most of them hunt like a terrier. We have had loads over the years, and for close combat style ferreting,..bush to bush, or in tight places where it is imperative that the rabbit does not escape,..nowt much beats them to the punch... One of the fastest and most determined whippet types that I have seen in recent years, belonged to Madgwick off this site. The wee dog had blistering pace and was a bolted rabbits,.. worst fecking nightmare...
  7. Personaly, I love being in the company of hunting men,.be they trappers, snarers,.roustabout rabbiters, whatever. I just love everything about the game,....it excites me now as it did 50 years ago... However,..I have never made a secret of the fact that, as a full time rural pester, I am not keen on educating potential customers or, new lads coming into the business.. This is not being elitist, paranoid or greedy,..just realistic.. Facts are,..for a pro trapper,...there are only so many pound notes to go around..... All the best,..and good trapping to you all...regards,..Phi
  8. Seems strange to see you with a whippet,...but I can see you are going to have some great craic
  9. Moles need worms,.like I need a Jalfrezi... So,.in the dry months,..even when it is scorching,.first thing in the morning,..water will lie on the wire fencing or wooden railings,...it will gently drip, drip into the ground directly below,...and the damp conditions will encourage worms,...and what do moles eat...
  10. Superb bit of info there Matt,.. Could have done with it, back in the day',...we were out,.with the dog,...and I busted my ankle. It was a long trek back to the van,....I could have done with a medic,...but, perhaps in the circumstances, I would not have made that call. Anyway,..many thanks for posting what might turn out to be a life saver, for some poor fecker.
  11. Poignant words from Bryn.... Better safe than sorry...
  12. Where Not To Set A Mole Trap? Anywhere in Hampshire....
  13. You are correct there Loafer... Back in the day,..I visited every man who claimed to have the blood of the old Droving dogs in his line of lurcher. To say that it was an eye opener,..would be an understatement... I was born into sheepdogs, cattle dogs and a miscellany of roustabout herders,..and for me, it is the sagacity and hardiness of such critters, that makes (or made) their inclusion into a line of hunting dogs so worthwhile... Quite why lads used to make claims of their dogs being descended from such ancient beasts,..is baffling When I bred my own Smithfield Collie / Norfol
  14. No fellah, I put Sadie to that old Blue Shag,..and produced a couple of litters,... Crazy days,...crazy dawgs,..but it was all great fun...
  15. In truth,..the dogs I have now,..I would not have kept,..back in the day... But,.in terms of contentment and usefulness, for the job in hand,...I am happy with my stock. The biggest problem some guys seem to have, is in changing the goalposts,... By that I mean,...it is easier to work with a jukel that is a specialist at the job in hand, than to try and make a Silk purse out of a Sow's ear (most unhygienic as well ).. Obviously, you do get some extremely versatile lurchers,..dogs that will turn their paw to anything. However, for myself, I only wanted a wee collie cur th
  16. @ Keepitcovert The few images I have are all fairly dated ,.nothing special.. Never took many photos back then...had no reason to... Just bred dogs for my own use, they were just my take on the Smithfield lurcher. It is good to see a few guys that are still interested, in such antiquated things.... All the best, Phil.
  17. The majority of antique,Victorian, Edwardian poaching books and tales of such folk,.were mostly penned by country gents and others that had been captivated by the romantic notion of 'ye olde poacher',.etc... Facts are, they just repeated what they had been told....these silly feckers should have got the jail for impersonating poachers Smithfields still exist, in areas where a Herder is required to hunt up his sheep,.ie; New Zealand and similar high country...The working type of beardie collie still survives in parts of Scotland and fulfils a similar role to the old style Drovers dog....I
  18. True words,...and in the long run,..it is all about longevity and survival, in the trapping game...
  19. I always charge enough to cover the job... Nothing worse than under pricing a job,...it is a heart breaker and always makes the trapping so much harder... So,..it pays to look carefully at every individual contract and price accordingly... It is easy to work cheap,.. and be a busy fool.....
  20. Well,..I used to lamp rabbits every night,..even walked out on poor nights.. Years and years of it,..two weeks on,.following the moon phases, then,.two weeks off,.doing other things.. Nowadays,..I just cannot be arsed... Maybe if a guy comes calling and the night is black, with a chance of some plentiful sport on the Downs,..well perhaps. Other than that,..naaa,...I am all lamped out.... Enjoy your night walking lads,...I certainly did...
