  1. Although Collies and Australian Cattle Dogs are both herding breeds,.they have been created to perform different tasks.. Their temperament and overall mindset are also,. very different...
  2. When a breed is uncommon,...there is usually a valid reason....
  3. Nice types,. I grew up with similar curs... Back then,..I never saw a working dog on the farm or in our village that looked anything like a greyhound.. When we moved South, from my native Wales to the Hop Fields of Kent,.. things were so different. School was not on the agenda,...I just ran wild with Romany lads. They had amazing, lean and mean running dogs,..mine looked kinda poor,...real poor... It was a big shock to me...! However,..the years have rolled by,. and times have changed... Almost gone the full circle with lurchers now... I am content,.. at last...
  4. Enjoyed both clips,.. As stated, the camera work was first class,...a far cry from our own amateurish attempts,..back in the 1990s I remember my partner hauling the old SVHS camera up onto the tops,... The thing was as big and heavy as a Microwave Oven,...and just about as fecking useful.. Neither of us had a clue as to how to use the various switches and knobs.. It seemed as though we filmed, every cock up and foolish mistake,..but nearly always missed out on a fabulous catch and carry.. It was emotional... I doubt that I shall ever get back oop there,..but those exciting
  5. Whats this, a fecking 'hedge measuring contest'
  6. A real popular cross locally... A common type of lurcher,.. twenty years ago...
  7. Whatever method you choose to utilise..it must be as humane as possible... I generally trap em,.sack em,..then dislocate their neck vertebrae....
  8. I have been out with guys who seemed obsessed with having, extra, extra,.fecking extra bagging The nets caught us no more rabbits than usual,..but did appear to encourage bolters, to run along the entire length of the netting,.trying to get up and over, an impenetrable wall of thick netting.... It was, emotional...
  9. I think along the same lines as yourself .... I like a dog to show prey drive,.but feck constantly sewing him up,.. for a poxy rabbit...! Barbed wire is an abomination,...
  10. There are quite few Kelpies working in the UK,...smashing dogs..
  11. That is a real old style jukel,..and a Hen bird is ideal for a quick Jalfrezi....
  12. Super images,..many thanks for putting them up... Makes ya want to get out there...
  13. Yeah,.they are all looking good for this rabbiting season,...lets get ready to rumble...
  14. Owned some and been out with, a fair few Beddie lurchers... They are generally tough wee feckers, with a superlative nose... This type has always been considered the hedgerow/dykebeck ferreter's ideal choice. For myself,.now in my dotage,..the mouching/marking dog, (no matter what mix),..really is the kiddie
  15. Hi Sirius,..we were rabbiting in North Wiltshire a week or so back,.so I took the opportunity of a brief look at both litter brothers to your youngster... They appeared to be happy and contented, and will hopefully make reasonable rabbiting dogs.. All the best, Phil.
  16. Its great craic,...you are at one with the night,.... you can go anywhere.....
  17. Hi James,...good to hear that you fancy getting a dog to assist you with the ferreting... Going rabbiting without a keen dog in tow,.. can be a boring old game.. Most lurchers will serve you well,.if given the chance...but,..its sensible to keep things simple,...so take your time and choose wisely All the best, Phil.
  18. " Work em hard,..and treat em like heroes"...
  19. Facts are,...Veterinary procedures are rarely cheap... You can sometimes get away with things, if the Vet is a specialist 'running dog' man and understands your unique situation,..or you know him personaly and can have a deal. Whatever,.. for a hunting man, the prognosis given to the pet dog fraturnity,of "the dog will be able to lead a fairly normal life,"...is a far cry from being informed ," he won't ever run again" . We need to know,...and that is the difficult bit... Cruciates are always bad news....££££££
  20. Seen plenty of hares driven into Long Nets by the coursing fraternity,...for relocation.. You have got to know the land and get the nets set up, into the most suitable positions.
  21. I well remember the auld days,...getting on the train to Rowlands Castle.. We used to leave the Ghetto at first light , bound for the Stansted Estate... Each of us carried a small bitch ferret in a canvas bag, secreted in the lining of our coats... What a sight,..two dark haired young lads,..long coats,.gypsy dicklers around our necks. We must have looked reet fecking suspicious As we got off the train, the aged Station Master would often kite us, and verminous rat that he was,..get straight on the phone to inform the Head Keeper of our arrival. However, we knew the score,
  22. Personaly,..I think a few lads take themselves a wee bit too seriously... They sometimes expect their dogs to possess noble qualities, that they do not have themselves ,..indeed,..more than a few want a dog, to be a lean, mean, killing machine. Some folk are just too keen,...possibly far keener to get the prize than their jukels are. It would be hypocritical of me to say, that I was never like that, because I was,.. maybe one of the worlds worst. Facts are, all dogs feck up,...as do all hunting men,...shit happens....
  23. Because the sole importer had to submit the traps for approval and has the costs of importing the traps. He's also not in business to make a loss! I know it seems harsh, but let's not forget that if it hadn't been for two very good trappers who invested time and money getting the BMI's approved for use in the UK, we'd still have Fenns, and not a lot else True words...
