  1. Heartwarming to hear such poignant words from a fellow hunting man....
  2. That is the lurcher mix that I breed, and favour... Nice and nimble, quick and quiet around a warren...and just right for the hedgerow game...
  3. Im just off to check some ground buddy, not taking the big Saluki x only the Pom and Don the cur..all hiking gear on and just a rambler for the day..hopefully get to see what I want and old one eye will get a run or two..just want to line a job up for next season now..if you don't get out on recce"s towards the seasons end and early spring and find out what's on the ground your left wasting days during the season going on the off chance there may or may not be anything to run..it's just something ive always done ") Real sensible FUJI.. I no longer get out much... But,..I always use
  4. Whippets can be quicksilver fast on their rabbit,...hope you have some canny times....
  5. Lean and mean,..looks to be a real handy sort...
  6. use the old fashioned methods tomo like we did as kids two tesco bags over your socks lol You sound a bit upper crust Brookie,..Tescos, fecking Tescos,....what is wrong with Lidl...
  7. Good advice there Vin.. I first saw tiny,.weasle sized ferrets 50 years ago... They were generaly runts of the litter that had survived the cut.. Ocassionaly you would get an individual that defied all the odds and faught his quarry, in the fierce and determined manner of a Mexican Lightweight... But,..as a rule, these mini ferrets were woefully overmatched and generaly ended up staying in the ground,..perminant... Nowadays. I have seen a few teams of these weanies,..(not to be confused with the long, lean powerful types, often refered to as Greyhound Ferrets) and through
  8. You hit the nail on the head there Comanche,...the best trap is the one that you feel confident in using.. Like most things in life,..you get used to a certain item/tool and if it ain't broke,..there is no profit in chopping and changing...
  9. I have used most of the contemporary Duffus style traps,...for me,..Bethel Rhodes are my prefered choice. I do believe that their major UK distributor is Killgerm Chemicals from Ossett... I was extremely fortunate, in purchasing a quantity of brand new traps, off a Pester, heading for pastures new,.across the Irish Sea.... He had a van full and at £2.00 a pop,...I should have taken the lot..... I was a wee bit slow on that particular deal.... .
  10. That is a cracking photo Lofty... Wish I was a better traveller,..I would have loved to walk over, such a fabulous place... All the best, Phil.
  11. Well,.I've done my night walking,...years and fecking years of it,.night after night.. Still like to have a trip out,..but,.. I can take it,... or leave it... My pleasure today, is to have a daytime mouch,...no pressure, no hassle,.just a bit of sport and some good craic...Watch the youngsters hunting up their quarry... Mind you,...ya still got to be in good company. Walking out with proper dog men,..lads with no competitiveness in their souls,... Experienced, running dog men,.guys that know the score and who can accept our often difficult situation, and lack of good open rabb
  12. i appreciate with any dog you have to put the time in i do. i just need to think long and hard on whats the best option for me and of course the dog. just trying to find out as much as i can before making my decision. its a big commitment. ideally i want to end up eventually with a good working dog. either raised from a pup or rescued it will have to be trained alot. Listen up young man,...training a lurcher is not hard.... Unless you are keen to get into some kind of competitive aspect of the running dog game,.racing, coursing,.sit and stay comps, kinda thing,...and simply want t
  13. Different type of land darn sarf,..and obviously, nowhere near as much acreage as oop North,.but back in the 1980s/1990s ,..we had plenty of rabbits, all along the South coast... We was out every suitable night...never, ever stayed in a job for more than a few months,...I could not hack it,...I just went out with the dazzler.... It was addictive,...years and years of night walking....I did not want to do anything else,... But,..times have changed, the rabbits are gone,..so apart from the odd relapse, I rarely bother going out at night...I am now 90% cured.... In truth, there is
  14. Bob is a nice guy,...he made me a beautiful Hemp Long Net... I sent him up, a bumper bundle of old vermin traps (girt great box full,..I could hardly lift the fecker ).. He does a few charity shows and introduces folk to the trapping game and explains things to the public..You can never get enough of this,..as pro-trappers,..we need everyone on our side.. The legislation affecting the job is getting ever more severe,.we don't need Jeff queering the pitch . As humane and responsible men,..we are best off fighting our own battles, making our own personal rules and adhering to our own co
  15. The most important thing with Collie Lurchers,.(in fact, often far more important than in many other hybrids),...is the Collie... It pays to examine closely, both the physical and mental attributes the herding blood contributor,..or the end product can sometimes be heartbreaking and a cruel disappointment.... Few breeds of canine, are as amazingly varied,.as are the various pastoral types,....you have to choose wisely....
  16. No doubts about it,..you have to vigilant, where dogs and chavies are concerned,..or the child might have to pay a terrible price.. One of our neighbours is a smart looking gal,..but she ain't too keen on jukels.. When you look closely at her face,..there is a definite scar on her cheek... This was done by a terrier when she was a young girl,..she has never forgotten it... However,..from a different angle,..one should always bear in mind the fact,..that dogs ain't humans,..and to treat them as such is foolish. A 10 week old canine, does not regard a young child as a human,.in its eyes
  17. I would agree with you there Trenchfoot.... Some folk tend to make what should be an uncomplicated issue,.. into some kind of algebraic equation.. Personaly, I have found it easier to either 'use what I got' ,.or try and locate, the dog for the job... I have always worked on the 'Keep it Simple,.Stupid' principle...
  18. That is now my prefered type ,... Most of my rabbiting is done in woodland or alongside ditches, gullies, etc... I find a smaller dog, gets in and out of the bramble and brash,... real quick.. Anything bigger, faster, stronger and more capable than my wee cur,.would just be a waste. All the best, Phil.
  19. thanks tomo yeh it makes sense Ferreted the area many times.... Sadly,..you can only kill a rabbit just the once... Bright Eyes and his kin, are now fecked,..and I do mean,.proper fecked
  20. Good to see you with your own young jukel.... As you know,.."a genuine moucher,.. should never walk alone"... All the best to you both for the future, regards Phil..
  21. Fabulous post,..modest, full of fun,...great craic,...right up my street,..
  22. I am the world's worst for early starts... My poor old body doesn't seem to function too well, until the joints become warm,...and my head clears... Obviously,.on a paid job,..you need to get on site,.same time as the client,..or there will be trouble. Most Farmers are sticklers for getting, a fair days work,.for a days pay, kinda thing,..so you have to be there... On jobs for the Local Authority ,..Nature Reserves, etc,..you can sometimes wing it and work the day, to suit yourself.. Same with removing rabbits from large Manor House gardens,.under sheds, decking etc.... The
  23. Just seen the segmant of that CW article, on the feasability of lurchers, catching big numbers of rabbits... Those words are nothing new....
  24. Spot on there bonny lads... Hey,..don't get me wrong,..I still love to get into a good old place, choc-full of rabbits,..same as most lads,.. but,..I just can't be arsed, driving half way around the country for them... Each to their own, eh...
