  1. Working seven days a week and booked up with jobs, for the next 6 weeks....
  2. Facts are,...with the genuine Collie lurcher,...(and by saying that, I do mean a hybrid that visibly exhibits the attributes of the pastoral cur,.both physically and mentally),.... they are either very good,...or very fecking bad.... . Ya gotta breed from the types that suit your requirements,...random crossings with any old collie can sometimes work out, but I would always play safe where the herding breeds are concerned and look carefully, into the heart and soul of any example,.before wasting valuable time..
  3. Hi George,..200 yards ain't a lot ,....you might need a wee bit more net...... Beaters will encourage the hares to go the way you want them to,.but local knowledge of their likely travelways, is essential.. All the best, Phil.
  4. Bushing rabbits with a bobbery pack is the Sport of Kings,...I fecking love it.... The mouching game, is a stars flight away, from the discipline required on a serious day's ferreting,... Facts are, it is a relief to chill out and let the dogs do their thing.... Great sport...
  5. How good to see Tomo's and Vin's last day out on the ferrets. They have provided some generous days out, for several young guys (and a few olden's) off this hunting man's website...so,..much respect To Vin,...I would put that ferret safely away,...maybe find him two nice strong wives.....he sure as hell deserves em... Best of luck for the long Summer break...regards, Phil.
  6. I don't think it is a case of folk not bothering with the hybrid ,.they were never intended to be popular. In fact, they were relatively uncommon and were, in the main, bred by guys that simply fancied trying out, a different kind of pastoral lurcher type.. They were certainly different.... Good fun though...
  7. Been trialing some canvas buckets,..they sure are comfortable to carry,..but require a wee bit of tweaking...The bucket definitely needs a sewn in sleeve for markers, plus a few more modifications to suit a mole trapper..
  8. Matt is right... Some soils,.especially darn sarf, on the coastal plain,.seem to have a kinda salty effect on the metal.. Facts are, few traps are made from the best steel,.so,..this year I am determined to put aside a real hot day and dip all my traps. I did this many years ago with the Fenns, Imbras and Body Grippers,... I am convinced that it has saved them from rotting away. It is curious, but even with the mole traps,.some batches of the same trap, from the same supplier,..corroded badly ? Traps ain't cheap,..they are the tools of our trade, so it makes sense to look after them..
  9. Many thanks to all the guys who have put forward measurements and specifications to the manufacturers of these traps. I have no practical skills,..I can catch most anything , and can train a dog,.but other than that, I am a wee bit backward..SO,..once again,.many thanks... And now we wait...
  10. Thats right,....being a Trapper is a great life,.and yes, the job does bring you a certain amount of respect.. It has always been like this, and in bygone days a Mole Trapper was much in demand. His pay was better, than the average farm hand or rural workers,...and it is because of this, that men tried to keep the proffession, in the family and kept things, close to their chest... "Tis' Witchcraft thy knows" This secrecy, is the reason for all the old wives tales and foolish nonsence, spouted about moles and their destruction.. It suited a trapper to hear such things,.and in m
  11. The trap isn't mine,..a young guy from Devon collected a cur pup off my last litter, and brought it to show me. If he lets me keep it,..I'll give it to you free, for your collection... All the best, Phil.
  12. Superb post... OTC.....a wee bit of advice...given in friendship.. I once had a good old pal,...he was an authority on the Working Bedlington Terrier... His name was George Newcombe.. For many years we corresponded, and eventually met up and shared our enthusiasm for this old style terrier type. I was constantly pushing him to put a book together,..alas, he never did,..and many others went on to use his hard won knowledge and vision, in their own manuals....SO,...please don't let there be any regrets... I have no specialised knowledge,.I am just a Moucher...but you have served
  13. Hope you get full traps tommorow Bryn..
  14. What a cracking thread,..one of the Hunting Life's best... I well remember me and Dave Harcombe trying to sell Terrier Yearbooks and Lurcher Journals... We had a flimsy plastic tent,.. with books laid out on a decorators trestle table,... The lads were everywhere,..like fecking locusts..! Talk about a free for all,...we was losing books, faster than we was selling them In the end, we just gave up,.or should I say, gave in,..feck it I said,..lets just watch the coursing... Great days,..will we ever see their like again...
  15. Very true Tiercel... I have always faught shy of educating folk about any form of trapping,.more so, the activities that earn't my wages. Many times, I have been asked by reps and suchlike, to give a demo or a wee semina,.with slides, etc.. "Oh we will pay you well",...they used to say.... I thought long and hard about such offers, ....but came to the conclusion that it would be foolish to school the opposition..What good would a one off fee of a few hundred quid be,.. to the carnage caused .. Obviously, over the years, you meet up with like minded souls and it would be mean
  16. I also have problems with my hands Bryn,...that was the reason I suggested the importation of the Talpa... I knew that I needed the edge, that the handles would give me,..and for a few years I have done real well with them. Joke was,.I always had a quantity of Dutch Talpex traps in the shed,.but I believed that with my hands I would not manage to set them. I just did not have the strength.. Then,..one day I ran short of traps. I was working on some manor house garden jobs and a small equestrian place,.just three or four paddocks. Super sandy ground, ideal for the Dutch connection...
  17. Good work there Matt and Co... As a trapper of some years experience myself,..I would only echo your most erudite and accurate suggestions.. Facts are, (and it pains me a wee bit to say this),.but,..Mole Trapping is fast becoming a minor Field Sport ! To say that we have trappers coming out of the fecking woodwork,..would not be an exaggeration.... SO,..please continue with your most excellant project and lets try and convince the FlatPack company to make, for once and bloody all time,.a good quality , ready tweaked,.usable UK Duffus Trap.... It is in their interests to do this ...
  18. Be nice to see how the lads dog from Hancock turns out... I like a dog that will pick up game birds, ducks, etc..... Keep us posted...ATB, Phil.
  19. The run is always there,...it has to be.... SO,.if you choose to accept this mission,.it is your job to find it... This message will self destruct very shortly...
  20. Personaly,...I think things are getting a wee bit too technical.......... Mind you,..I'm a dumbo, so I would say that...
  21. I think that Ratbait are going to do real well with that free delivery thing.... I've taken full advantage of their genuine Talpex offer,...a large consignment of good steel is on its way...
