Scotland is a great place.... I try to get up North every season,..the Western Isles are my favourite,.but really,.. you are spoilt for choice... Lots of interesting areas throughout the UK , but Scotland is special... -
@ Fuji.... I love the Collie crosses,...always have.... The best of the breed are a pleasure to be around... They are so knowing, so in tune with their quarry, and once you learn to speak cur,.the game is on.

The problem with catching rabbits in traps that are not designed to kill em quick,.is that they hollar ... This scream, is the perfect draw for any predator or even a domestic critter,.so a rabbit is best killed wham bam.. Rabbits will often squeeze into trap tunnels,...it happens on many estates,.(especially on Wild Bird shoots) where vermin control is paramount. I've seen plenty ,.still alive .... Facts are shit happens....

@~ Smithie,....as you must know,...there is nothing new about drop nets,..nor some of the other gadget Maester's weird and wonderful playthings...but, in my opinion,.. for sheer practicality,...especially when weaving in and out of trees and brush in woodland ,..nothing much beats, a nice,.. 'off the end pins',..traditional long net..
-
I use both methods,...Traditional and the Basket and if another way ever turns up,..I'll be on it in a flash I have found over the years,...that the best way to catch rabbits, is to be versatile and adaptable,.that feck's em All the best, and good netting...

Dogs Can Get You In The Shit ........
Phil Lloyd replied to socks's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Deer,...Roe, Muntjak , Sika and Fecking Fallow,...really are a pain in the butt It would not be an exaggeration, to say that it's nie-on impossible to have a quiet mouch anywhere around here... Me and the Wife was having a chat about the situation and could not figure out why,.. Back in the day (well,.back in the night )...we never seemed to have any problems with our dogs taking off after the deer... Our dogs were used for deer, so obviously knew all about the feckers,...but it was a rare occurrence to lose them in woodland during the daytime. Maybe they were better trained tha -
@ Old Trap Collector... Back in the day,..after the field tests had been completed, these old traps were often returned to to the Min of Agriculture offices, and left to rust their lives away.... It really was a criminal waste of resources,...a pal of mine once rescued a hundred or so miscellaneous vermin traps, from out of their official rubbish skip!

This is a difficult,..if not , impossible question, to answer... After being around working dogs for so many years,..it is difficult to pick out a particular animal that was vastly superior to the others. This is further complicated by the usage that certain individuals were put to... I have been lucky, and owned some good rabbiting/ferreting/mouching curs... I've also kept other types, for other things.... But, all things being equal,..many years ago,...I did walk by night with a medium sized Whippet/Greyhound/Saluki bitch... She was an extremely honest gal,...and tried her best

Hi,..I'm whacking in a fair old amount of traps,.so a cut down, stainless steel, Border Spade suits me fine,...but, I do have a Hori Hori knife,.and yes, I would agree ,..it realy is an extremely useful and capabal tool. .. I keep mine close to hand , especially when setting alongside hedgerows, where the root system quite often causes an obstruction in the tunnel. Ideal tool for the job....

Well ,.much as I abhor anthropomorphism and find folk who treat animals as humans to be a wee bit silly,.. The reality of the situation is,...some men are born bad,..and some animals appear to be the same....

We were rabbiting on The Plains one morning,.. A lad, down from Wales, had brought along a nice powerful, blue lurcher bitch. The man had only owned the bitch for a day or so,.. and she was noticeably, confused.... He told us to watch how quick the bitch was, and maintained that in her last billet in Yorkshire,.she was mopping up rabbits and hares, no problem...Truth was, she definitely looked the part, and we had no reason to doubt his words,..well,...until a rabbit bolted and ran straight over my feet, almost into the bitches mouth.... We were all shocked, as she stood and watched the

Little Un's are ideal for hedgerow rabbit hunting,.. and roustabout mouching,... I realy do enjoy the antics of my wee cur bitch ... She just loves a rake about for birds, etc, amongst the rough stuff,...great fun...

Fair play to you Maz,..

Certainly not knocking your trap idea,...(for me that would be hypocritical)....I cannot even knock a nail in,...I am 100% hopeless at making anything. However, I have seen most of the images of the prototype traps that were forwarded to the Ministry of Agriculture after the banning of the Gin Trap,...so, I am familiar with the manifestations of mad scientists and their ilk... NO,..I was simply wondering about your script regarding 'super moles' and their ability to evade capture.... Personaly,.and as stated, I would wish you well with your labours, and obviously no offence intended,..bu

No offence fellah,...(and I mean that most sincerely),...but are you on some kind of medication....

It is a shame when ya catch weasels,...I always regret it. But,..these tenacious wee hunters live the life of a Tiger....they don't give a feck about anyone.... They do what they want, and hunt wherever their chosen quarry leads them, perhaps, it is their fate
