  1. Dunnocks are one of my favourite birds.....and proper nasty sods too!
  2. Well, It was only my opinion..... I have to say that i've personally never seen anyone slip on a rabbit at plus yards at night. And I've spent my whole life lamping. Other critters are a different matter, but even with those yards is still a long slip and before long they will be out of the beam if they don't run your way. That said, it's only lamping and, in all honesty, I don't judge my dog (s) on what they do at night, it's daytime where they are graded. But each to their own and good hunting.
  3. IMO even yard is a VERY long slip for a rabbit, or anything else for that matter. In the beam distances look double what they are.
  4. Even 'point and slip' plodders can catch rabbits. I seen it once....
  5. just another angle to look at this......: Who on earth sells such chavvy idiots these dogs in the first place? They are just as bad!
  6. Some seizures occur when there are no physical movement. I've seen bitches have them when simply sat in their kennel.
  7. I doubt if spaying will work matey. It hasn't in the cases I know of.
  8. IMO forget 'sitters'......the type of field is more important than a squatter.....find a field with a nice tight sheepwire fence with grass growing through, or a drystone wall. Send the dog out to rabbits whilst you lamp from the place where they're heading for. Don't shine into the dogs eyes, just the rabbits, if possible. Always try and send him out rather than walking him out on the slip.
  9. I have. They don't work. Least, mine didn't.
  10. Crime rates must be very low in those areas if the police are wasting so many hours and taxpayers money on such trivialities.
  11. OOOhhh...... I want more snow.....then I can get a few more of these.....
  12. The thing is lads...there's protein and there's protein and it all depends on what sort of protein. For example, peanuts are over 50% protein but your average lurcher wouldn't run very well on a diet of those. Basically forget the protein % and feed a balanced diet , or a dry food that has been formulated for working dogs. JMHO>
  13. It's a pup. thats what they do. Avoid rabbits for now. Let him grow up a bit first, then take him places where there's rabbits. On his own. I've never subscribed to all that bollocks about 'let him see another dog run so he'll know what to do'. You don't need to. if you want you and him to become a team then you only need to go out with you and him. When he's ready. And when you're ready.
  14. hAVE YOU TRIED HER WITH A FRESH RABBITSKIN DUMMY?
  15. There's only one for me..the legend that is Johnny Mathis....
  16. What is 'brains'....define what you mean by 'brains'.
  17. Instinct is what saluki's give to the hybrid lurcher, as well as solid feet, speed, litheness and, of course, stamina like no other dog on earth. Saluki hybrids, when raised as lurchers, will act like a lurcher, and well capable of doing everything other lurchers can, however, they also have the ability to consistantly stop hares on land both big and small and that is something non-saluki lurchers wont be able to do. Just MO.
  18. The trouble with women is that they're often like monkeys....they won't let go of one branch 'til they've a firm grip on the next one.
  19. What he said,,, I've noticed lads forget easily the quarry the dog misses,,,it's easy to remember the catches,,, a month or two back,, I was out with fella lamping rabbits...we took 18 out of 18 off one field,,,, We took 69 that night,,, wich wasn't bad considering he's a bit of a gimp.....and I had to carry his catch,, cos of his narrow back I heard his lamping partner that night was a bit of a fatty.....with well-developed moobs .
  20. But that can also come down to the skill of the owner on how he enters the dog to each of its quarry ... If it's rushed then the most potential of dogs could be spoiled and if held back the full potential may never come to the forefront ... Obviously you get bad dogs as with all things in life but I was talking about guys that continually swap sell buy new dogs ... Every dog they have had can't be a bad dog surely ??? .............. You sound like my old adversary Crow..... No matter how 'careful' you enter the dog, one day you aint there to hold his hand. I totally agree ... But don't you
  21. And alot depends on what tasks a man want's his dog to perform. What quarry? Day or night? 'Cos let me tell you, if a man think's he's going to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear for catching daytime fallow, he's most mistaken. (pre-ban obviously)
