  1. In all honesty, how many lads actually do enough hunting to see if their dog's really are all rounders? I've seen a few dogs over the years and very, very few have been all-rounders. In fact, I will go a bit further and say that there's not many dogs that get tested enough to see if they're worth any title. IMO an 'all rounder' has to be able to catch a high % of what it runs by day and by night, as well as perform other tasks. A dog's owner that won't put the miles in can never have an 'all rounder' simply because no one has access to all game species on their little patch. Just my thoughts
  2. I know no ones mentioned it yet, and it might not be ideal for you guys ....BUT...over the years I've had to hunt heavily hunted land and I often found going at a later than average time would give better results. I know it might be impractical on a school night, but going out at 3 or 4 am will definatelty improve your bag and you'll almost certainly get more runs. I know it's worked for me. When I was a young man, and keen as mustard I worked night shift and often would have to go home early due to 'illness'. 3am and the fields were getting walked, fields where i would struggle to get a run a
  3. Dredging upper and middle reaches promotes flooding, not prevents it.
  4. Yes, your lass makes me put 'Oil of Ulay' on them before we have sexy time!
  5. I was asked to trap a rat in a guys loft a while back. It was moving up and down the cavity walls, entering his kitchen during the night. The thing is that this rat simply would not go near a baited trap. After a week I still hadn't caught it, so I changed tactics and a MK4 set on it's run from under the loft insulation nailed it. Maybe sometimes bait is much, much less important than the positioning of the trap.Maybe?
  6. Pm me if you fancy getting paid for a rolling cycle of rabbit control in this area. There may be a little bit of mole trapping to do as well, but its easily taught....JD
  7. What birds...thats what it depends upon...
  8. Well.....the latest I've heard was that prior to 12 weeks the innoculations will be ineffective as the pup is still carrying many of the bitches antibodies. So I guess we all agree to dis-agree....but I wouldn't be surprised if in the coming years the age which vets perform the 2nd jab is 12 weeks. but we'll see....... happy jabbing.
  9. they can't have their 2nd until they are 12 weeks...no matter what age they had their 1st
  10. paid ferreting/long netting/rabbit control available . pm if you live near and can devote 8-12 hours a week to rabbit control. thanks JD
  11. First thing you've got to remember is...that people bull$hit about pike more than any other fish......chances are, there ain't no 20lber..... but, if there were, why not try a nice livey, either free roving or paternoster at the side of the boats
  12. Anyone fancy doing alot of ferreting and getting paid for it, drop me a pm... the kirknewton area Edinbrugh..
  13. I don't think the RSPCA would return a working dog to a working home even if it was chipped.I can understand why people get there dogs chipped, especially with all the dog thefts of late but I personally wouldn't get mine chipped because I think it could create you a lot of unwanted interest if the dog is showing signs of heavy work. Maybe I'm being paranoid but it's just something I have always thought about, even when I was young I would never put a name tag on with my address on a dog, but that was because I was always somewhere I wasn't meant to be lol. A friend of mine on here got his d
  14. Bit of a sod to catch this one. My mate could hear noises in the room space so I had an investigation. Rat runs were obvious so we set traps and hoped for the best. it took two weeks before he was caught, living in a space between where the loft was boarded out. A Fenn did the damage, set on the run and covered over with a board so the rat wasn't thrown clear when the trap was sprung and loft insulation to camoflage the plate from the unusual feel of cold metal.
  15. Keep your chin up mate...these dogs are very distinctive....BUT be aware the scum who have these might shave the dogs coat and dye it to change its appearance. let's hope the dogs are found asap...
  16. Anti's don't take dogs really, it's scum who want them to run and breed off, then they can sell the pups. Thats why there's so many smaller breeds going missing, cocker spaniels etc, they can be put over any old mongrel and the pups labelled as 'cocka-poos' at £600 a pop. beats going to work. Internet adverts, and the associated annonymity are the fuel for this. These scum love pinching peoples dogs, they don't have to bother rearing a pup, or spending money, just pinch a dog, run it to death then leave it behind. These are not dog men. These do not care about morals, or anything else, but them
  17. I have some better photos of the missing dogs in the passion for coursing, if anyone can scan the pages? I don't have my hard drives here at the moment. Will try to get some pics up later umnless someone beats me to it. Jamie's dogs are very distinctive and should stand out a mile. Who-ever stole them knew he wasn't going to be in. They're scum,it's about time the law is changed to make it a mandatory 5 years for anyone stealing dogs...
  18. Footholds are illegal in the uk. To be legal a fenn needs to be set within the confines of an over-hang (tunnel). In hard weather I set a Fenn further into a warren than usual and this helps to avoid the trap freezing. Besides, it's only the Uk, not Alaska.....One way to stop soil freezing is to try and use very dry soil, freezes less then. I also use quite alot of sphag moss to cover the pan....where possible.
  19. Only hand feed her for a week. Stay away from the bunnys. Feed her every five minutes throughout a walk, keep putting her on the lead then letting her off again after a few minutes walking. When you're at home do not let her go for a walk/ jump in the car until she comes to go on the lead. Good luck.
  20. Let's hope they get what's coming to them. Keep this thread at the top. If there's a guilty charge let's make sure it receives maximum publicity. There must be a hell of alot of evidence against the trio for it to get this far. Can anyone elabourate further on the case?
