  1. Well done Matt....get some more traps down...where there's one....
  2. Funny how the bull x is open to ridicule but the saluki........ Shush now...
  3. A bull cross with a snorkel will smash it!
  4. f*****g THL classic right there. You new to hunting pal? The hares have got better so we need a saluki cross instead of a collie cross LMFAO f*****g belter that. The hares aren't any harder ffs. It ain't rocket science, the saluki cross was brought in for wind. A hare will only run as fast as its getting chased so if the fields big enough, it makes sense to lose somepace for wind. You think cos you see hares running for several minutes they must be stronger than in the past that's down to the running style of the saluki. It's much happier sitting in behind wearing the hare down. Don't mean t

  7. If you got out a bit more you might see that there's a number of dogs that can do 3/3 throughout the winter.believe it or not, there's a world outside of this site you know, and some dog men live that life.
  8. I agree.....when you dissect the term 'all rounder', it soon becomes apparent that they really do not exist. that's JMO.
  9. I would disagree with that the weight forward does help a little for casting, but does nothing for presentation, and as the OP was asking about fishing with a dry fly, the best presentation will come with a double taper. I have a little 7ft #3 weight rod and a cheap DT3 floater and the presentaion is first class with it, turns over beatifully. I have used it on fairly large waters when the sedges are on, of an evening and it catches me more fish because of the presentation i am able to get with it. TC Well, I used to use a DT for everything, but now I've gone the other way. Each to th
  10. spot on, how many purpose bred dogs does a running dog have to replace before it can be called an all round running dog? be realistic here lads. j darcy in any of the many books you have written, running dog addiction and the likes (ive read some but not all so open to correction) have you compared the lurchers abilities to work to the gun, ive seen loads of fabulous pictures in your books but none of a lurcher retrieving ducks from a lake or swollen river, none of a lurcher retrieving a pheasant to the hand of a waiting gun........ they may be there but i havent seen them (yet)! you write ab
  11. with all due respect and im not saying this in a smart way but a lurcher is a running dog, if it does all the game previously mentioned and never used with a gun then imo yes, it an allrounder. A spaniel or pointer is a gun dog....... i dont ever work any lurcher with a gun and if they did it would possible be a bonus but i use a purpose bred gun dog for gun work. a german pointer is a HPR, as are most of the continental breeds, where as the english pointer isnt HPR, retrieve isnt in its title, some do retrieve, some dont, that doesnt stop them being a gun dog........ if they retrieve its a b
  12. I would imagine that many of the 'poachers' dogs from the days of yore would have to have been a dab hand with the birds, especially at night. For myself, I do require a lurcher to work with the gun, both day and by night, and all the better if he will work water too. After all, the very essence of a lurcher is filling the pot.
  13. Can a dog be classed as an all-rounder if it doesn't work with the gun?
  14. Absolutely top class pics Moll. Many thanks.
  15. With a 4/5# i would recommend a WF, the DT doesn't work quite as good with finer lines. Also, if you are a beginner the WF will help with casting too. Just buy a braided floating loop , attach that to the fly line and then attach your leader to that. If you're still learning I would opt for a shorter leader as this will help with your casting. You'll soon pick it up. It's really quite easy/ JD
  16. Top class, I have a huge interest in the capra of the world, would love to hunt them one day. Superb, hope you can write more.
  17. amber, ffs where have these people been looking. last week i counted over 70 between 2 canal bridges a distance of no more than half a mile According to what I see late spring here the Hen Harrier isn't faring too bad, The male did a fly by every day at 5-5:30 I might just have to rely on what other experts say of its status nationally though you saw one bird and you think it isn't faring too badly? If you'd have seen 70 then you are well within your rights to state that they must be doing well, but one?
  18. Who on earth has told you mallards are in decline. There's never been so many, and that goes for Greylag's too. The fact is that Mallards do need to be put on GL, they are everywhere and do not do the ecosystem any favours at all. Common knowledge internationally and nationally from bird counts, all wildfowl are monitored and we have international commitments to do so every year. Greylag are locally abundant in a few areas, much work is being done to build numbers in others. Local GL has been done with other geese in the past as has been the case with
  19. I fully agree, I am not anti BTO, on the contrary.....I think they do a wonderful job.
  20. From the visits I've made, it seems the rarest thing in London is a cockney!
  21. amber, ffs where have these people been looking. Err ..... At the entire length and breadth of the British Isles, mate. You, or I might glance out our window and get a snap shot of what we Think is going on out there ~ like my own, famous 'six or seven great tits' But, the BTO employs a vast network of dedicated observers, right across the land, who specifically go out and head count every single specimen and send in their official reports, to be number crunched by specialist scientists at HQ. That's what they do. It's what I do. It's why I ring birds. I also head count an

Wishing you a speedy recovery, you'll be back out with the dogs before you know it matey.......
  24. but where does it end, my dogs have never seen a giraffe Exactly, where does it end? That's why the title 'all rounder' isn't all it's cracked up to be. If the dog hasn't been run on all available quarry in the Uk then I can't see how it can be crowned 'all rounder'. It's just so easy to bull dogs up when they've done very little. Especially so on the 'net.
