Think its only if their brother and sister they come out disabled. Mother and son or father over daughter or anything else is line bred.

They should be ok.

Hello wolfdog. When your talking about rats, are you talking about normal rats or nutria ?. I imagine a standard longnet would catch nutria as their about the same size as rabbits.
-
Either would be good for a beginner. I started off keeping hobs but theirs no difference temperament wise. Their all easy going if handled enough. Id advise getting 2 cages though so you can separate them if they start chewing each others necks during the breeding season. Jills can usually all live in the one cage with no problems through the summer and they dont smell anything like the hobs. Hobs stink when their in season and they only need to rub against your clothes slightly, then you stink like a ferret too.

I use the harness and mk3 on 2 of my jills. The fasteners do pull the nets more but its better than 6 ft digs to find the collar when it slips off. Iv put extra holes in the collars and they still come off. One of them hates getting her collar on and isnt long and giving a nip when she gets annoyed. So its much easier to use a harness on her.

Geat nose on that dog.

Mine doesnt get aggressive but he starts trying to drag me into the hutch by one of my fingers lol. He latches on and will hang off my hand but doesnt break skin.

If my beddy whippet sniffs a burrow its occupied but if you blink you would miss it. Literally a couple of seconds sniffing, Its that quick the mark. Shes constantly on the move and very serious when working. I used to say good girl when i realised she was marking at first, but no point giving her praise as she doesnt listen to me or anyone else. She gets on with her job fine and dont need told.

September to feb or early march if your really lucky. Used to be any month with a r in it was the season for hunting rabbits, not now.

Beddy whippets dont shed my arse. Mine sheds constant. Looks like somebody emptied the dryer filter wherever she goes.
-
My hobs the exact same. when i use him i take a couple of pegs as markers and when i put him in the hole i leave the locator on but on low, so you can just hear it. Basically have to follow him and soon as he stops for more than a minute mark where hes stopped and remember what depth it is. He kills very quick and doesnt stick with them. Wait till he comes out and dig them up. try that or get a good smallish jill

Absolute crackers. Well looked after them two. Dont think you'll have any problems with him doing a bit of graft.

Get a pup off working dogs that retrieve live to hand. Iv a beddy whippet that i use for lamping ferreting and go mooching with. She will catch rabbits live and pin them to the deck but bashes them when she tries to retrieve them. Seen a few hard mouthed whippets too.

On one of my perms its not myxi or vhd. Its a combination of summertime hunters with dogs and guns. Birds of prey and the amount of foxes all over the place is unreal. Also me ferreting. All takes its toll. I Stopped ferreting 4 weeks ago to try give them a break. Serious decline in numbers this year.

My hobs been in season past 2 weeks. Balls well and truelly dropped, ear licking and scruffing the jills. My jills arent in season yet.

I do it the odd time. Dont really have the land suitable for doing it. The rabbits can make an escape fairly easy as the ground i hunt on is littered with warrens and the rabbits be out and in a hole and gone. Was ferreting the the other day with no nets for a bit and my bitch managed to get 3 out of 6 bolters.

Cant speak highly enough of my beddy whippet. 3 generations of lurcher to lurcher breeding. Put in a full days ferreting yesterday and managed hers and mines first night lamping last night. Gave her 6 runs and she caught 5 out of 6 but dropped the last rabbit. She caught a hare during the day a few weeks ago when we were ferreting. Shes not the best busher and cant see squatters even during the day. Wont touch birds and im surrounded by pheasants lol. Has yapped once or twice but caught everything she has yapped at to date. The coat does help big time. My dog got caught on top of barb wire fen

Absolutely brutal season. i got out 3 times this season. its pissed from the heavens on the days iv tried to get out. Going to try get out the weekend but looks like rain again. Surprise surprise.

Tried it mate. with a syringe honey and water with my hob after coming back from the vets after getting fluids and anti biotics. Never made a difference.
-
If they become lethargic and lose weight your better off culling them as i find the vets are worse than useless when it comes to treating them. I lost 2 ferrets last year. One i culled when i saw it was getting worse, the other i went to the vets with and tried everything. 2 of them took sick and died within a fortnight of each other. If i was to go by the symptoms i read up that they died from i would have said insulinoma too if it was only one that got it. Its more than likey viral what ever they died from... sorry to hear about your ferrets puffadder.

Suppose its possible. Could be a strain of disease in the area alright, weak strain of parvo or flu for example that dogs foxes or cats carry in the general area. Ferrets are really tough animals but a virus or bacteria can wipe them out quick enough.

Hope you get the wee dog sorted with a good home. Fair play to you.

Headed out ferreting a new piece of land today. A embankment seperating 2 fields. Get there and first thing i notice is the amount of cover, brambles to waist level and hawthorn on top of that. Great. Anyway we gave it a go. Setting nets was a nightmare. Catching on everything and didnt help we couldnt stand up due to the trees. Walking around crouched over. Done the first set and the first rabbit came out a few seconds after the ferret entering. One in the bag. The ferret had another mooch then showed signs nothing else was there so we moved on. Next set same rigmarole with setting up but we
