  1. I start the hobs at 5 month and the jills at 7 or 8. Depends how big and how keen they are. I get them properly nip trained first so they dont bite you when your digging and having to put your hand down burrows.
  2. Mine have names too, more the wife and kids wanted them to have names or i probably wouldnt have bothered they are Loki, bruce, aiofe and demi, then the kits are william, spike, morgan, millie and mini cause shes the smallest lol. Their pets now as well as workers.
  3. When your caught on land you shouldnt be on. Tell them you have permission for neighbouring land and you must have strayed. Be polite apologetic then ask for permission.
  4. Put phones and ferret finder and anything valuble in secure zip pockets when not using them. Easy for them to fall out your pockets when your out doing a bit. I also put the locator in a wee clear plastic bag to keep the sand and rain out of it as i very rarely get a dry day out.
  5. Mullet from the sea are cleaner. Ones feeding in the rivers tend to be full of mud, sewerage and other muck thats in tge river.
  6. Sam you need to get a mentor first and get out and do a bit of hunting with them first. I know you said there are is no one around you who can show you but their is so much more to falconry other than just flying the bird. Care and flying weights which you wont figure out yourself. Google and see if there are any clubs around you. Get books, watch videos. go to shows and game fairs and get as much info as possible. Im doing the same myself. I would love to get a harris some day but not till iv got the time and right tutering behind me to get the best out the hawk. Atb.
  7. Some jills after they have had a litter i wouldnt go near them unless i had welding gloves on. The jill iv got now doesnt mind one bit me being at her kits but her mother gave me a couple of bites through my jeans for just being in the same garden never mind going near the hutch. hormoenal bitches. She should calm down again for this season.
  8. My ferrets all work different. And i would class my main hob and jill the best for the sand dunes where they do their grafting. They had plenty practice too and are good at their job now. The others are ok. I owned a hob ferret for a while that i had out plenty times. He bolted them ok.. but i never saw him catch or kill any. Had no strike in him. It'd be a great idea to start something so when your looking for a good working ferret you can get one instead of a kit from any old jill and hob thats been put together so somebody can make a few pound. Im more than happy with mine but someone else
  9. Been handling mine to check they were ok since they were just a week old. Jill was fine. not nippy in the slightest. Seen some you cant go near after they have had kits. If shes getting stressed out leave them for another bit.
  10. Id trap them but you still have to find where they are getting into the building and block off the holes.
  11. Would agree with you tb25. I begrudged handing money over for my ferrets because id never done it before. They were worth every cent. You would pay the right price for a working dog so why not ferrets. Once you have them you can keep your own stock and sort mates out with kits and be sorted out back when needed. But 20 euro is nothing to pay for a good working ferret. Maybe some guys wouldnt be so quick to dump their stock at the end of the year if they had paid for them either.
  12. Cheapest iv saw ferrets going for here in ireland is 20 euro for working ferrets. Seems to be the normal price for them. Once saw another advert where they didnt want to sell their ferrets to any hunters and they wanted 100 euro for it. When i stayed in scotland i never paid for a ferret ever. Near died when i bought my first 2 here. 25 euro each and i was sick handing the money over.
  13. You can buy them over the counter in the vets. Then you dont have to pay the consultation fee.
  14. You can really visualise a bunch mates out ferreting having the craic then heading to the pub after it. Talking about digging with t bars and on hands knees listening for the rabbits back in the day. Id say theres truth to that poem. Its a nice one fly.
  15. Seven pints apiece then into the motor for home tut tut lol. Its a good wee poem. Did you write it ?.
  16. Absolute dirt coming away with comments like that.
  17. Thanks james. Goin keeping 2 jills out of it for myself. The mother and father of them are good workers and sweet to work with.
  18. I dont think so. I reckon they will be bews, the jills a bew and the hob is sable.
  19. Decided to put up a picture of my kits that were born last week. Cant believe how quickly they are growing. Everytime i look at them they seem bigger. 2 hobs and 3 jills.
  20. Old sandy soil is deadly for falling in on you. And the burrows tend to be deeper in them too. 5 and 6 ft digs are common enough. Was actully thinking that on my last dig trying to retrieve a collar at 6ft after the umpteenth attempt at clearing it. Feet first always. Im always on my own apart from the dog
