  1. Cleaning my ferrets out this morning i noticed one of my hobs has taken ill. His symptoms are, he has diarrhea is very lethargic and seems to have lost weight since yesterday. He was ok yesterday. He is going to the vets later on to see if they can help. Iv saw ferrets take ill like this in the past and the outcome usually isnt good. Has anyone on here ever successfully treated a ferret in this condition or know what medicine would be most likely to work for him. As it would be best to know before i get to the vets incase they dont know what to do. As none of the vets i phoned have any experie
  2. Hes turning the head and protesting at being picked up but has he actually bit you yet ?. Reason i ask is that some ferrets go through a mouthing stage where even up till 3 or 4 months they will give a playful bite which can be hard but they very rarely break the skin. Keep handling him as suggested and start playing with him after a feed and tell him no when he bites too hard the way you would with a pup. Never have the the smell of food on your hands around kits as they dont know any better and they can latch on. And dont be afraid of them just pick them straight up and dont hesitate as they
  3. Mine was the same. One side swollen for a couple days. Then go down and the other side would swell. Build up of milk. If your unsure vets is your best bet. Better safe than sorry.
  4. My jill had hard lumps under and around the teats. Was just a build up of milk, went away once the kits were bigger and suckling more. She had a smallish litter. Sometimes it would go away then come back again. Though if your jill has mastitis she'll need an antibiotic.
  5. aye it was interesting alright. I dont know the full ins and outs of it all. Think your right about the bew being a very light silver. Iv a bew kit in my hutch. Her litter mates were all silver bar one which was albino.
  6. Most likely from breeding the tamest wild polecats to the tamest again over generations. So they could get an animal that could be handled and be used for working. Their was a documentry about silver foxes in a russian fur farm. They were bred for certain triats over 50 year. Some to be tame and others to be aggresive. The tame ones eyes changed shape. Also eye colour and their coats became lighter. Some becoming white. The rowdy mob of foxes coats became darker. They done it with mink too with the same results.
  7. Have a golf course me and one my mates do. His perm not mine. Was thinking of using them traps as the golfers are a moany bunch and would kick up hell if they saw snares. You know yourself. Most dont care but it only takes one or two of them to lose your perm if things arent being done right in their eyes. Going ferreting it come september.full of cover and going to be hard grafting.
  8. Good luck with golf course. Handy when its right beside you too. Is it rabbit cage traps your using ?
  9. Might be used to cat nuts or some other crap. Got a rescue last year that took a good few days before she started eating meat. She'd still ignore raw meat to get to the dog nuts if she had the choice.
  10. Aye. Hobs they seem to be faster and catch more. In small sets you would have the spade out a fair bit. I only use mine in the big warrens in the sand dunes where your not always going to be able to dig. As they often go too deep. Anything under a thirty holer use a jill.
  11. You gave him the chance and you tried your best with him mate. Sorry to hear that. Had to cull one of my kits the other day. Still feel crap every time i think about it. Horrible when you lose one. You done more than enough for him.
  12. I use a huge hob for working. My best worker infact. He never touches the nets once hes in the burrows. Only comes out when the last rabbit is dead or bolted. Couple of people have said hes too big but hes out every chance i get and we always do ok on a days grafting. He works fine and works fast too. Never came across a burrow he couldnt get into.
  13. She was definatly over a year old when i got her.
  14. Iv a rescue here that never saw a bit of raw meat before i got her. Dont know her background. Was nearly a week before she started eating meat. Would eat dog kibbles no bother. She done a bit of work last season and i will admit shes not my best worker but she does earn her keep. Dont think its too late to train her if shes off good working stock. Youll never know till you try her.
  15. Never had one like that. Does sound as if its been at the wild garlic. If your unsure about it give to one of your nieghbours dogs.
  16. I find the mark 3 easy enough to work and dont have any problems with it. Great piece of kit. Cant compare it to any others as iv never used them..
  17. They have to be nurtured but it has to be in their nature too to kill and hunt. I had a ferret with no prey drive. Would just just mooch round the burrows but would never strike. Even live rabbits in the nets he wouldnt touch. Throw a dead rabbit in the hutch he would scoff the lot. Bolted plenty but never bit them. Dont have him anymore. Have his brother who is one of the best iv owned yet.can work big warrens single handed.
  18. Around 9 weeks i have them going into tubes in the garden. Dont need to train them for that they root through them themselves. Then i get a fresh rabbit skin and flirt it with them in the tubes and hide it on them so they have to use their noses. Good fun for them and its a bit of exercise. Also its building up their natural attacking/killing and tracking skills they would get if they were in the wild off their mother. Its getting them used to being handled while being excited biting the skin which is good nip training in itself. Couple of months of that brings them on good. My hobs see their
  19. Taking a fit is fairly common in even non serius head injurys. Like a delayed knockout. If its eating and drinking so far so good. If it makes it over 24 hrs it should be sound but the unsteadiness on its feet could last a few days. Doubt the vet will be able to do anything for a head injury but im not saying dont take it either. All you can do is keep an eye on it for now. Flys right they are very tough wee animals.
  20. Id agree with vin. Most vets know nothing about ferrets. Dont know if its because most people keeping them tend to neglect them and dont take them in when they are sick or cull to avoid a vet bill. My vet has never treated a ferret ever and was stumped when i was talking to him about mine. Had to phone england to find out about them. Id personally keep him on the raw meat as well as its the best for them. Fair play to you for bringing him to the vet.
  21. Hope the wee kits ok. What did the vet say was wrong with it ?.
  22. Looks like it has worms. Take it to the vets for a proper diagnosis.
